Mike Roth lives in AZ. He still races and nobody can forget him getting pummeled at a Supercross at Daytona. In reality, he was probably the most successful of the FBI clan. His dad owned a bar on the south side of Chicago and had the last remaining license for a bar to be open 24 hours. His dad and uncle got into a some problems with the mafia and they fire bombed one of their places. I think his uncle died from it. His dad was a real character and was involved in gambling and the horses.

Rusty's shop is going out of business. His old business partner Bill Baird lives overseas building factories for Caterpillar. He was fast in the 70's but couldn't get out of his own way after beaking a a whole lot of bones at an Amateur National qualifier at Maplehurst somewhere around 1980. He was in a wheelchair and crutches for over a year. I also heard he had a serious heart operation 10 years ago.

Jimmy Veugeler races mini cars and does pretty good. He is getting fat and old like the rest of us. I imagine his family is still in the garbage business. His mom was drunk half the time at the races.

Jimmy Randa works for Rusty. Don't know what he's doing but he had really serious hip problems from a mini class crash that's followed him through the years. If you remember, his older Gary was the fastest of the Randa's and he broke his neck at Maplehurst in 1982 or 83. Fortunately, he wasn't paralyzed but that pretty much ended his racing days. Jimmy had some great battles with Breck Powers and Breck's dad was a cool dude.

Troy Bradshaw moved to Buffalo,NY after the "Deep Tunnel Project" finished in Chicago. He was a miner by trade.
Jim Veugler's mother passed away about 10 years ago in a car accident. She sat too close to the wheel and my understanding is the air bag killed her.

I forgot, I talk to Chris Brasile once in a while. He is a firefighter in one of the Chicago suburbs. Last I knew he was starting to ride again and was starting a motocross school for "Just Dirt"

Do you guys remember Billy Bowman? He's still around and still likes to throw a leg over a bike occasionally. He came out of retirement a few years ago and went to LL in 40 plus class. He's a drywaller by trade.

A little more recently southern Illinois had Brian Mason who chased the SX tour for a few years and I believe made a few mains. I haven't heard his name at all lately, anyone know what he's up to?

The old photo of Veugeler is great. He was probably the most successful guy to come out of Illinois other than the Bomber. Jeff Surwall was really good, too. He always had a hot girlfriend under his arm.

If I had to rate the guys I know by speed and ability in the big races it would be:

Mark Barnett
Jim Veugeler
Junior Jackson
Jeff Surwall
Mike Roth
Andy Stacy
Troy Bradshaw
Del Vassey
Rusty Ott
Jim Canner
Greg Randa

Sure there's a lot of guys who were fast at certain tracks but these guys generally didn't fold under pressure. A lot of the guys listed by other guys were Byronites and maybe could ride a couple of Illinois tracks. The nine above could go anywhere and ride fast. Ott was probably the most talented but had too many distractions. Veugeler gave it 100% and it showed. Roth wasn't afraid of anybody. Canner was really fast but his family didn't have a lot of money or he could have been outstanding. Randa was good but easily rattled so I rate him lower. Del Vassey flew at Maplehurst on his Maico but really didn't do that well on the National trail. He also raced 250 on a Maico but never was in contention to win.

I am truly sorry about Jim's Mom. She was a barrel of laughs. We had a lot of fun at their house.

Billy comes in the shop all the time, his wife works here.

And last I heard about Brian Mason was about the time he got dropped from the DeCal works team. He started making mains then I think RC landed on him when he was down (or vice versa, can't remember) in 05 maybe. I'm pretty sure he cracked top 20 in the nationals a few times, too.

About twenty years ago I was practicing @ Byron and I was coming out of the back woods area when I spotted this fast approaching blurr coming @ me. I soon realized it was a full grown doberman. This dog jumps and hits me in the chest and handlebars. Takes me out totally. I get off my ass and go tell Joe about it, and the fucker starts laughing @ me and says "She hates Hondas". Good times Good times.
I got to ride Byron once back in '73. I remember a hellacious down hill in the back. Seemed like the first 30 feet were vertical.

I ran into Ron Joynt on a Karting forum,
Didnt Jimmy Canner run Tuf or DGY race team for a while?

Fosnock, or any of the Southern FBI mentioned yet?

Any of you guys remember the Lyons family?
Mark and Mike Lyons from Brownsburg Indiana?

1N from Indiana being........Mark Melton?
1N could have been "the bomber" as well

Mike Roth:
Liked racing him at Terre Haute Indiana track. Loved to pass him on my clapped out YZ80 against his very trick bike. Wasn't his cousin named Nunez or something like that.

Who were the kids at Casey racing the Steens and JWRP bikes back in the early 80's

My buddy told me Jim Randa was sued by 5th/3rd Bank, filed for bankruptcy, and mis-appropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars from Pro Source.

The FBI is talking to all of the Pro Source employees and couple of dudes could end up with orange jump suits. This thing is big, really big.

Didnt Vuegelars parents sell the trash co way back in 1985 or so?
he was racing some class of Stock cars for a while

Powers is in Tx contractor about a year ago last I knew.

Not really a FBI but Kenny Bollmeier runs Bollmeier yamaha still racing.

It was Greg Gimpy Randa, not Gary.

What about all the Southern Illinois guys?

Tampico was the bomb. I remember one race, 80 cc, Mark Menzick, Tony Passini and a few others, from the outside went around the first turn WFO never let off single file on the edge of the snowfence around the first turn.

If you went over, it was a long way down.

Mark Tripp was there that day too......I heard he passed on.

Wow some them names bring back memories.Byron was my home track back in the early 90's when I raced. My class I was gettin my ass handed to by Maximoff, and Skaggs, and Bardoner. In the big boys class it was Keith Bowen,Andy Stacey, and Junior Jackson dominating. That was until Dehoop and Button and I think even Henry tore the field up.I also remember Brian Battaglia showing up sometimes to put a hurting on the field.Got to spend some off time with that guy.Whatever happened to Battaglia?
