Thought this would be the best place to post this because it seems to be a common injury, on the 10th of December I crashed my Motorbike which Dislocated and Chipped my elbow. I had it relocated that day and put in a half cast till the 23rd of December. The doctor said it'll be Three months before i can ride again but they always over estimate and allow safe time for it to fully go back to 100%. Ever since I got the cast off I have been trying to move my arm more and more everyday, So far I can get it to be 1cm away from my fingers to touch my Shoulder, but I am still no way near close to straightening it. It stops at about 30 Degrees degrees away from being straight. Does anyone have any tips or experience on how I can start getting movement back slowly. I just wanna get out and ride again before the weather turns to shit. Thanks!

Just let it hang and deal with the pain. I'm still doing PT for my shoulder and one of my work outs for getting my elbow straight was to hold a 1lb weight and just let that pull my hand down.
Just be sure the pain you're feeling is tight muscles, not something else.

Do some PT for tennis elbow. Start with the basics.

I have done this three times to my right arm. The first time it was out maybe a minute but I believe it damaged my tricep muscle. The muscle now looks funny and that arm is weaker now. The second one was very brief, and the third time it was out for maybe three hours like yours before it was put back in. I wore the cast for one week than took it off. I slowly just stretched it out and did very light weights maybe 3 pounds for a few weeks and than slowly moved up. I always wore a sleeve on it when using weights. I did tricep extensions and kickbacks till it was getting stronger than added bicep and other exercises. I was back racing within 5 weeks but always with a sleeve and some pain. I am now 8 years since the first one and 5 since the last one. The arm is still slightly smaller and weaker, I should see someone about the tricep sometime.

I have had this same injury, I had to go to a physical therapist and he put me on a bench with arm rests (like you would use to do forearm curls). Then he would push my arm down to straighten it out. After about 3 weeks (9 appointments) I had pretty good flexion, then after about 3 months of normal usage I had regained my entire range of motion. Do not push it too fast the injury still needs time to heal. At about 6 months I was completely healed like it never happened. Now 12 years later I have arthritis in that elbow just a little something to look forward to Smile

You need to regain that movement before your body creates too much scar tissue and adhesions. It's a fine line between pain and progress. Here's one tip I've heard of...try sleeping with a small weight in your hand forcing your elbow into extension....the theory being that each morning you will wake up with it slightly straighter than when you went to sleep.

PS - You would've been better off with a clean mid radial/ulnar fracture!

Ouch Firthy, Keep with physio to strengthen muscles which stops further issues. I dislocated my elbow 32 years ago playing footy and it still gives me grief. Tendonitus and numerous partial dislocations from that day on. I try to keep exercising the elbow to keep it strong and try to keep off further dislocation. My mates say I should drink more cans and wank for exercise. Last time dislocation happened was in Feb when racing, braking bumps just popped it out. Whisky throttle and had to rip my hand off the bar as I had no feeling or movement to stop before going over a berm. Somehow I half got it back in where I could ride over to a photographer who helped me get it back in. Finished the race but sore for weeks afterwards. I sometimes tape and use a neoprene guard if I know track is super rough.
Good luck, injuries suck.

I've had the same injury, but a little worse. I broke the same process off of the ulna back in 2009 at Comp Edge.

It takes several months, but if you stretch the joint to the point of mild discomfort (not pain) and do that frequently, your range of motion should come back. I currently have a few more degrees extension in that aftermarket elbow than my OEM elbow. It took a while before I could go full extension and also touch my shoulder-blade.

It will sound like garbage the rest of your life. If I put my ear against my left shoulder and move the elbow, it sounds like an old, dry ball-bearing with some sand in it.

The biggest key in my opinion is to stretch it often in both directions to the point of mild discomfort.
Motoxdoc is right in my opinion on the fine line... I didn't try the weight thing, but nearly constant stretching at each end of the joint's travel during waking hours.

Stay in shape! You'll be less likely to crash when you get back on the bike if you keep your fitness up. I was riding my bicycle 30 miles a day while healing.

In my case, I was riding after about two months. The doc cleared me, so I went to a turn-track on a Monday.
That Friday I rode Perris MX practice. Saturday I raced with 1:2 moto scores.

I did the dislocation, and tore the ligaments right off the joint as well, but waaayyy back in the dark ages of the first Ful Floaters...(1981). For me, I went through two surgeries to fix it, and I never regained full extension. I am probably 15 degrees short. Not enough to make an everyday difference, though it did keep me out of the Police Academy way back then. Talk to your surgeon and ask him about the RoM. Did you have ligament tightening done as well as the bones repositioned?

Huge thank you to everyone that's replied! At the moment I've just been doing some real basic lifting with light 5kg weights to try and stretch it out some more, I go for my first Therapy Session on the 20th of this month so hopefully they can start to give me some more exercise's.

And yeah I had both the ligament tightening and bone re positioned.

Thank's everyone sorry I can't reply to each comment!
