Electric and the future

I've been thinking more and more about electric bikes since Josh hill on the ALTA at Straight rhythm.

Whilst noise and smell of the bikes is a massive part of the sport and something we've all grown up with and love,
I feel it's time everyone got behind the change and the push to electric.

The biggest hold back for the sport is the 'anti socialness' around the noise of the bikes.

Once the noise dissapears, you can have a track literally anywhere means better and more tracks, which then opens up the sport to a size non of us ever thought possible.

The future is electric!
(no i don't work for ALTA lol)

Wich means less people riding and following the sport because who wants to watch or ride electric mx? Minority.

People who think electric bikes will open up new riding lands are delusional. The people who keep regulating dirt bikes off of public land, want them off regardless of propulsion system.

The thing is that people talk about electric like it is being forced upon them and they are really trying to fight against it. The makers of the Alta electric motocross bike have said themselves their aim is not to eradicate gas powered bikes, they just want to make the best and most competitive bike they can. If you are right and people don't want to ride and spectate electric bikes, then they won't sell them and your worries are over

Electric will drive the sport into the ground. You think it's bad now. Give electric only just a few years and see how fast it all falls off a cliff. Tracks will close at a faster rate, as even regular moto guys will stop going to currently open ones. How many people think a toyota prius is really cool? Show of hands?

How many thinks that the BMW i8 or Tesla is cool?

Competitive electric bikes are good for the sport.

This subject will open up a can of works until proven otherwise. If you said 50 years ago nearly every human on earth would carry a minuture powerful computer in their pocket, you'd have laughed in their face or ask what a computer was.

Times are changing so fast, I think the sport needs to embrace it. Kids of today who are coming up with electric will look back laugh and say look and those noisy, dirty, unreliable, smokey old things. Whilst people like me will be in my shed reflecting back on what was great about the sport and bikes in 'our' time.

To think that there won't be more tracks is radiculous. We have land but we also have a business (a concrete works) I haven't built a track because I don't want to give the neighbours an excuse to complain as they're pretty good about the factory. With an electric bike, building a track is the 1st thing I will do!

If not the noise of bikes they will complain of dust. Of lights at night, of traffic, of the PA system.

Electric solves nothing

As soon as the AMA makes a rule allowing an unfairly powerful electric bike eligible in the 250 class, they will take over. All you 4-stroke guys will be complaining about it just like we 2-stroke guys complain about thumpers.

Isn't there a whole subforum for this kind of talk?

Yes, electric will be a thing that will gain popularity as time marches on; no, it is not the end to moto as we know it. If there are competitive and technological advancements to be made it will be raced in some capacity or another.

Some of us will once again quietly make the switch, because it will be better.

When they're better, and more reasonably priced, people will buy them and definitely have fun on them.

However, one example where I don't think noise matters is on ATV-only trails, and around here, we aren't allowed to ride in ditches. Even if we were quiet, I don't think we'd be allowed. I think it's a concern of us digging ruts or whatever.

I do think it could allow tracks to be closer to homes without people being annoyed by the noise.

I am sure the neighbors in the new subdivision would like the lack of noise better but there's no way I can buy electric bikes for my son, nephew, and myself at those $15000 prices.
So we'll still be on cheap to keep 2 strokes.

about the first or second time one of these silent but deadly killers comes flying around a corner on a trail and drills a hiker(s) the enthusiasm level will diminish rapidly.

Teslas are nice. Neighbor has one. He also has an F12 Berlinetta and he can open and close the exhaust with his remote.

Nobody gives 2 shits about the Tesla when he starts it.

I never thought about 1 or 2 bone hEads on a 2-way connector trail marked "slow". The future might hurt

Whether they take over or not, what I've rarely seen discussed is the complete lack of spacial awareness these bikes will generate on crowded tracks.

You could be rolling a triple while a guy behind you wants to send it and you would never know he was even there. Same thing for blockpasses, etc. and also things like whiskey throttle.. Would the thing we call a "bog" still exist?

I don't think many people realize how much we rely on the sound and vibrations of the bike to make decisions on the track.

Noise is the biggest problem with a track right around houses, but dust is the second biggest issue. May be silent but first time your neighbor has a dust film on his grill you'll be shut down

They may help indoor tracks, but as far as the everyday guy building an indoor track in his yard or urban area, that's pricey.

Water, ya. Just thinking there are times in Cali, or anywhere really, where you water then ten minutes later its dusty.

They could help certain issues, but people will also find any reason to not like bikes

There is a thread about it already about a month ago.
I can give you a good 10 main riding trails that anything motorized is banned.

Ya, they are shutting down mtb trails around here all the time due to habitats and other junk (weird, they don't shut down the housing developments though). I thought you were saying they were banned statewide. I assumed early on that CA would crush any thoughts of electric bikes on dirt but my buddies in the bicycle industry have insisted that it isn't the case.
