Hey all,
I saw GuyB at the test track today and he told me there was a pretty sweet thread about me on here and being's I did a Q&A a while back I figured I would stop by and shoot the shit with you all and let you know what is going on. I have been riding SX and training. RCH has been helping with a bike and keeping me riding but there is no further plan as of today. My focus right now is to be ready and I try not to think about anything else.
I will answer any questions you guys have for me. I will clear a few up right now. I am not sure all of you understand how difficult it is to do it all on your own. Bike, mechanic, Travel, etc. If you average 10th for 17 rounds of SX that is $41,310.00 . You can hire a mechanic that " I " would call reliable for around 40K. So you are about even at that point. Gear money, Believe you me when I tell you there is a big difference in the pay from factory rider vs privateer. I know. I have gone the privateer route. I believe you can be competitive on a non factory bike but the truth is, its very expensive! Ideally you would have a money guy (sponsor, super fan, etc). Point is that it's not that simple to "just do it yourself". Also, yes I do have certain stipulations. I want to race with a feeling that I can be better than I was yesterday and I have a chance to better myself. Im not 18 and don't have 10 years to prove myself. My personal feeling is that I know what I am capable of accomplishing given the right circumstance, short of that I am not willing to do it. It's a dangerous sport and I am not willing to do it "just to be there". I have seen a bit about me possibly not having a ride due to me wanting more money, that is not the case. I could go on for a while. If you have questions let me know. I would be happy to answer them.
All the best Jake, I hope you find a deal that works for you. Its a shame that a few people assume stuff without knowing the real facts Sad

Thanks for the answer, Jake.

How does the arm feel without a bunch of metal in it? I know how my right humerus felt after having a rod removed that was in it for close to 5 years.. It was bliss...

CRAZY. That one was tough for me! At one point my elbow swelled up and I made a trip to the docs office. I had surgery scheduled for right after vegas SX. I was a little stressed it wasn't going to fix it. All said and done I am pain free and metal free in my arms.

Hey Jake, hope to see you out there as well. I like that you added the average finish and show insight on how much things cost. all my friends think that these guys taking rides for free or even paying out of pocket are the guys who really "want it", but you cant make a living like that. I hope you're ready to race, and get support or something with enough money to support you and your family. Best of luck to you and i hope to see you on the line this year. You're one of my favorites to listen to on the pulp mx show giving insight and you always have a positive attitude, on top of that you were the first pro rider to ever post one of my photos on instagram when i first started getting into motocross photography, which was awesome. (b&w pic of you sitting on elsinore sx triple lip in 14 i believe).

Thanks Jake and good luck this year!

Any chance of you getting back with the Tedders, Jake? I think you proved they can make a pretty competitive bike last year.

Thanks man! I do "want it " I have raced for no salary for 2 years. You can make some money when you are racing and I'm fine with that. Like I said previously my only stipulation is being in a position where i feel I can better myself and be competitive. If you are competitive you will make money.

Awesome to see that you're in good spirits Jake as I'm sure this is a stressful time for you. I do have a question though. A few have mentioned coming up to Canada for the summer and obviously it's a bit of a ways away from now but have you considered that if the right deal came up? I consider you to be every bit as good a rider as Davi and he pretty much worked everyone so I think you could do very well, and make some decent money while you're at it.

It is a possibility. I have been in contact about it. My biggest passion at the moment is to race Supercross and thats just being honest. I am cool with doing the Canadian nationals and I will continue to see how that transpires. There is a few details that would have to be worked out

Tedders run a good program, and I am thankful for what they did for me. I wouldn't do it again given the same circumstances.

Its almost criminal that riders of this caliber are riding for no salary. Literally.

What about setting up a gofundme for Jake? This forum got Ben Lamay on a VitalMX Husky a few years back so it can be done.

Honestly, how many top pro's come on here, POST UNDER THEIR OWN NAME and answer questions honestly about their situation? Virtually none.

Instead of bagging on everyone and everything, how about we do something productive and help Jake get to the races?

Side note: Not to piss all over my own party but I am broke as balls (hookers and blow) so my contribution would only be minor. However if everyone chimed in, I believe we could make something happen.

How cool would it be right?

What do you feel you are capable of accomplishing given the right circumstances?

What do you see and hear as some of the fixes for the Professional moto world? Or is it fine the way it is to you guys?

I'm a fan of yours and hope your there throwing it down every week. Preferably on a Kawasaki Smile

Matthes needs to step up his pulp mx support money big time! Instead of a helmet sticker Jake, run pulp graphics on the bike and have Steve be your wrench. He has taken others to the top Lol. Not sure if ever heard him mention it but he was once a factory mechanic and wrenched for a guy named Tim ferry

Jake, RMZ450s are not everyones favorite and get a lot of heat for being back dated and heavy and slow etc.

What do you say?

Jake,

Always been a big fan of you as you seem to be a hard working down to earth guy. I see where you wrote about making mains and the purse coming out to about 41k for the sx season. If you were to go out and buy your own bikes and suspension with motor work this year. How much more would you make in contingency on top of the 41k figured in ? Plus year end bonus for feld for say 15th place overall ? Also with gear money is it safe to say add another 50k on top of that ? I know that is asking a lot and there is always chances of you or any other rider getting hurt. Thanks for taking the time to do this and good luck in whatever comes your way for the year.

I'm okay with the idea If there's actually a reason for it. (Like Jake actually wants to go racing on his own, and there's a targeted goal to reach to make it worthwhile).

As a side note, what if something like this did happen, and then Jake gets a fill-in ride with a team? I'd assume many/most would want their money back. That would get sticky.

I don't want to be a downer on it, but I also wouldn't want to get it fired up if there's no intent to use it as you guys are talking about.

You are often brought up on Pulp with you finishing 10th place in Supercross last year and left with no ride, in comparison to quite a few unproven 250 riders who are happily making decent salaries while racing half the series. I'm curious to find out what you think of the ideas tossed around of doing something to limit the exposure of what's considered the "stepping stone" class, making 250's run full 17 rounds with no pointing out, or something else.
