I don't ride dirt bikes but this is the only forum where I could find info on shattered navicular bones. I broke mine into 11 pieces back in May and have had 2 surgeries since. I just got cleared to walk without the boot for the first time today and my foot feels way off. My balance, and coordination is pretty bad and my ankle flexibility is pretty much shot. Is my foot going to get back to normal or am I going to be limping around forever? I'm 22 so I should be healing relatively well, but are my days with high impact sports over?

Keep the boot on longer, it helps rebuild the muscles.

Basically, you are waking up your foot from a long nap. It takes time to wake up, as they are not morning feet.

Edit: That is what I did when I shattered my lower Tib/fib and couldnt use my foot for 3 months. Foot was weak and hurt like hell, you gotta do exercises and keep using the boot as much as you can.

Screwed bro.

I drove my foot up thru my lower leg.

I'd be pulling it thru its range of motion with a towel or such to break up the scar tissue

I broke mine in April. Surgery. Screws. The whole bit. I feel your pain! I know what you mean by your foot being off as well. I had to buy new shoes because my foot is a different shape and it was super painful with my old shoes on. I am just now to the point that I can walk normal for the most part.. and getting better all the time. I am still doing self physical therapy and it's made a huge difference with strength. I can lift my self up with that foot about 9 times now. Your going to feel it the rest of your life. But be glad it's not worse. And get a bike. You haven't lived if you haven't ridden. This was my first time riding after the injury. So yes you will be back to high impact whatever you do.

You'll be fine I broke my back pretty bad riding June of 2015. I thought a lot of things like I'd never be able to live without pain killers and I'd never be able to do normal stuff again. I started working out riding my mountain bike again and I feel great I rarely even feel my back.

No half Assing anything in life. Well that was a half ass whip for me but oh well! I was concerned about the pain killers as well. I just didn't take a thing other than ibuprofen the whole time. That way I couldn't get hooked or dependent on them.

Great job getting off of them sir!

Mine was very similar to yourself, I had an external fixator though. I was 16, I'm 26 now. 10 years out I'm still lacking range of motion. Strength and coordination have recovered. I've gone back packing, played beach volley ball, ext on it since. Still riding dirtbikes of course. Still some pain but totally liveable. The only bad thing is the scar tissue and limited range of motion, means my foot binds early when raised toward my shin and start straining ligaments easily in the ankle due to lack of range of motion. Pain meds until the doctor cut me off. Shit is going to hurt for a while but you will get through it. Relearning how to walk with out limping took me a few years.

Do you have a road bike or mountain bike? If not you should get one as soon as you feel safe enough to ride one you need to get some exercise but with little to no impact. Trust me man I laid around feelin sorry for myself and being miserable as soon as I got back in shape I was like "what the hell was I thinking I should have done this months ago"

Yes, for sure the painkillers/ meds- forgot about that aspect also.Very important.

About 1 year ago all my back/ Sciatic nerve messed up, I collapsed and was stuck to be able to move, ended up in an ambulance and then finally in hospital.
They dosed me up so much on Morphine, Ibrofen, tramadol and other stuff also.
I took so may ibrofens that I was eating them like sweets daily for weeks- didn't realise the side effects like a muppett (when I should have).
To cut along story short, terrible stomach pains after, for about 1 month, probably stomach ulcers caused by the large intake of Ibrofens. Expect many meds have a bundle of not so good side-effects- so wise to look stuff up before taking a load of them and ending up in another type of mess..... 'out of the frying pan into the fire... !'

I had Achilles surgery in May that became infected, after 6 surgeries to clean and close the wound and finally a graft to cover the now massive wound, which is still weeping.

After 16 weeks lying down with my foot up, and now 4 weeks back at work.
The bigest issue is the lack of movement in the navicular area and swelling.

Lots of pain killers and anti inflammatory, and i still walk like Egor!

Hang in there Bro!

Hang in there man! It’s a tough tough recovery. The more blood you can get moving down there the better. The biggest risk is the bone dying. Because if this I begged the doc to let me take off the cast as early as possible to get blood moving.. On my word that I would stay off it 100% the doc took the cast off after 2 or 3 weeks post op. I spent lots and lots of time moving it to keep blood flow. I think that saved me from a fusion or worse. As of now I still have the hardware in mine and I am planning on taking it out this year but I can do everything I did before injury. I can even run in good shoes. But It will be sore the next day if I’m too hard on it.

The ankle area gets poor circulation already. When not in the boot move your foot constantly thru range of motion. Lay on your back with your foot on the wall as high as you can for as long as you can. You need to carry that bad blood out of there as much as you can. Massage, Ice, compression sock. And most importantly, therapy! Do it religiously and you’ll get better quicker.

Talus are tough to recover from. I broke both left and right at the same time (auto accident not moto)
Doc said I would never run again, I said eff you, I WILL SO!
8 surgeries (4 L, 4 R) and a subtalar fusion later
Turns out he was right :-(

You are young which plays heavy in your favour, follow Docs orders and hit physio hard when you have the green light.
That is your best chance of success!

The question shouldn't be what do others think, the question is, what do you think?

You could sit around and feel sorry for yourself and never return to high impact sports again, or get after it and get back to normal , or even achieve a higher level than you had before. Your belief will determine your future, not a doctor or anyone else.

Are you immediately going to be 100% after this, or course not, it's going to take some time.

I did the same thing to my right foot. I didn't shatter it into 11 pieces but I did end up with it fused to the talus bone. At some point I broke one of the screws but I should have had them removed after a year. My doctor told me that any long running would be out. You need to talk to your doc and therapist and see what they say. I am a XXL old guy so running was never a big deal for me. You might be a medium/large kind of guy that won't be so hard on your foot for running. I do ride and race and really haven't had any problems with that other than being slow.

I do have issues with shoes and boots. I can't wear some slip on or western boots since my foot is a little thicker so they seem to be a 1/4 size off. Lace up boots or shoes are OK though. My foot stayed swollen for quite a while after surgery. I had to wear 2 different size rubber fire boots for a while. It looked hilarious since they are only in full sizes and were two different brands.

I shattered mine into 8 very neat pieces about 8 years ago, doctor fixed it by hand and strapped it in place and casted it rather than going in surgically. Cast for 4 months, then another 2 months of boot walking. My foot is about a 1/8 inch smaller than it was and I had very poor ankle mobility even after months of PT. The biggest issue I have is the lack of mobility, it really kills my squats and prevents my knees from tracking too far over my toes. To this day it still hurts if I do any sports that require quick changes of direction like basketball football, etc. Running in a straight line isn't too bad. One of the worst nagging injuries I've ever had, right behind destroying my knee.

Thanks for getting back to me mate! It’s a hard injury to find any information on so its frustrating not knowing the future but I’m 5 days off starting to put weight on it so hoping for the best! Good luck with getting the hardware out!

Sounds like you’ve had a tough run mate! All the best with it in the future and thanks for the feed back mate appreciate it!

Wow! That’s crazy, I feel for you going through 8 surgery’s! Your not wrong it’s a rough recovery! Thanks for the feedback mate! All the best with yours in the future!
