I shattered mine into 8 very neat pieces about 8 years ago, doctor fixed it by hand and strapped it in place and casted it rather than going in surgically. Cast for 4 months, then another 2 months of boot walking. My foot is about a 1/8 inch smaller than it was and I had very poor ankle mobility even after months of PT. I did the same thing to my right foot. I didn't shatter it into 11 pieces but I did end up with it fused to the talus bone. At some point I broke one of the screws but I should have had them removed after a year. My doctor told me that any long running would be out. You need to talk to your doc and therapist and see what they say. I am a XXL old guy so running was never a big deal for me. You might be a medium/large kind of guy that won't be so hard...

The question shouldn't be what do others think, the question is, what do you think? You could sit around and feel sorry for yourself and never return to high impact sports again, or get after it and get back to normal , or even achieve a higher level than you had before. Your belief will determine your future, not a doctor or anyone else. Are you immediately going to be 100% after this, or course not, it's going to take some time.

Talus are tough to recover from. I broke both left and right at the same time (auto accident not moto) Doc said I would never run again, I said eff you, I WILL SO! 8 surgeries (4 L, 4 R) and a subtalar fusion later Turns out he was right :-( You are young which plays heavy in your favour, follow Docs orders and hit physio hard when you have the green light. That is your best chance of success!

The ankle area gets poor circulation already. When not in the boot move your foot constantly thru range of motion. Lay on your back with your foot on the wall as high as you can for as long as you can. You need to carry that bad blood out of there as much as you can. Massage, Ice, compression sock. And most importantly, therapy! Do it religiously and you’ll get better quicker.

Hang in there man! It’s a tough tough recovery. The more blood you can get moving down there the better. The biggest risk is the bone dying. Because if this I begged the doc to let me take off the cast as early as possible to get blood moving.. On my word that I would stay off it 100% the doc took the cast off after 2 or 3 weeks post op. I spent lots and lots of time moving it to keep blood flow. I think that saved me from a fusion or worse. As of now I still...
