Used bike should i buy??? Kawasaki kx 250f 2006

So im thinking on gettin a used kawi kx 250f 2006, the seller says it is in good condition except for the air filter needs a new one, he wants 1800 for it BTW i am new on the sport, here are some pics , hope u guys can help Smile

Awesome bike by 2006 standards, but it's old now. Not worth any more than $1500. How many hours on top end? Bottom end? Suspension?

Also: the last thing you want to hear is that it needs a new air filter. How long has it been sucking dirt? That's the sign of someone not taking care of the bike, plus it's a decade old. She's a time bomb.

It's 10 years old, and it's not a Honda or Yamaha so it's probably really flogged.

Needing an air filter rings alarm bells.

As others are saying, if you don't know the history of crank or top end it is a grenade!

Try to find the cleanest bike you can with a honest owner who has had it for a long time. If you are just getting into it try to find something that gives you the best chance of riding it for 6 months to a year before you need to do any major work on it. A set of new tires alone will cost you $200, chain/sprocket/brakes/airfilter another $200+. That isnt major stuff but it does add up if you buy something in need of it (the bike pictured). Plus riding gear.

this this and this , first thing you do is look at the filter , a clean and oiled filter tells alot about the guy who owes it

Thanks man Wink , so i already have all the riding gear except boots, ill just probably get a new one like a 2016 any recomendations on that? Is it going to be to much for a begginer like me?

Tell us a little more about you, is this your first bike? How old are you? What kind of riding do you want to do? Have you raced BMX or mtn bikes?

Do some research on the first generation 250f from Kawasaki/suzuki (same bike joint effort), one of the worst of all time. Just so people know, the bike you're talking about is the 2004-2005 KX250F and 2004-2006 RMZ250.
The 2006 KX was the best 250F that year and several years there after.

New Bike? Wow, the world is your proverbial "Oyster"...

Check them all out!

Do keep the YZ 125/250 two-strokes on your list... Read up on them.

Boots? Hard to beat the Gaerne GX-1. Many say it is the best sub-$200 around. I agree.

06 was a good year for the kx 250f stay away from 04-05 and rmz 250 04-06 those things where a nightmare. Seems like a lot of ppl go for the yamis for reliability there all pretty good bikes. None are cheap anymore so just look into them and they all have pros and cons.

Honestly, I think it might be good to check out a 125 to see how you feel about riding and hone your skills before you drop 10K in debt.

I know it's a drive for you, but that bike looks pretty clean to me and he's only asking $1,800. A 125 is much easier and cheaper to work on if it pukes on you. Two strokes can age a little more gracefully than a 4T, and I can promise you that it's fun and will be much faster than you for a long, long time. I've been riding one for 25+ years now. I know I'd be faster on a bigger 4T but I ride to have fun.

Make sure it starts easily, sounds good, and the owner can pull in the clutch and put it in gear without it dragging. At least see that the clutch can disengage somewhat if he doesn't want you to ride it.

This bike looks like it's been ridden quite a bit, but it's a decade old. The biggest difference from what you showed us is that this one looks like someone cared and took good care of it. And, the two stroke is more simple to maintain and fix if she shits the bed.

Just my 2 cents.

Exactly what I was thinking. The guy selling it has such little mechanical knowledge that he doesn't even realize the repercussions that a damaged filter can yeild. So what else did he neglect?

The damaged filter is reason enough to run away as fast as you can.

Thanks buddy i want to get the 2016 its 6k brand new at the dealer and the 125 i think its to small for me since im 6'2" thats why im looking for a 250 they fit me just right

Haha yeah just dont want any mech problems from the start lol yes its my first bike, im 18, i just want to have fun in the desert probably hit the mx tracks every month or so, i have a lot of experience in downhill mtbing a race thats why i have the kit lol

Boots? Hard to beat the Gaerne GX-1. Many say it is the best sub-$200 around. I agree.
On the advise from people on here I went from fox comp 5s to Gaerne GX1s and it was a horrible mistake. They were honestly the worst boot I've ever worn, pressure points killed my ankles and they were constantly catching on my bike so that I couldn't get to the rear brake easily. If your experience was better then maybe I just got a bad set, but I'll never buy anything but comp 5s after this experience.
