Riding and racing is for fun unless your getting paid. Even slow guys have fun and pull sexy chicks. Just enjoy that your now fortunate enough to be able to ride/race again.

Ride a bunch. And then ride some more, and ride different places. You may race a few local races and run mid pack and go an hour or 3 away and could be the quickest in your class or dead last. Just have some fun Tyler, have some fun.

I read somewhere that, 'if you can't win,,,, wreck the guys that can.' I'm not saying that that is what you should do. Just saying that that is what I read somewhere....

When i was little i rode all the time. I had my own backyard track and i went to state races all around U.S and never lost. We ran into money problems i had to stop racing for probably 9 years. I raced last years state race on 125cv and got annialated(bad spelling). Im 17 years old now and ive rode about 7 times this year and there is a state race at kahoka MX which is where i ride now and im afraid to race now. Not for any normal reason im not scared of other riders. I dont think about crashing ever, im not scared to crash. Im scared to lose. When i lose it is just breaking i got so usto winning that when i lose its very bad and im going to race C class if i do race and i know i can stay infront of an A rider i just domt aant to race because i dont want to lose. ( i ride 250f now)
Everybody is afraid of measuring them selves up and coming up short, that is just normal ego. If you entered C class and won, you in true fact are winning nothing, nor is it a measurement of your ability. Embrace the challenge, that is where it is at!

If you can stay in front of A riders for even a quarter of a lap you shouldn't even think of racing C class! I don't see any c rider going within 10 seconds a lap of any decent a rider consistently track to track. maybe you should take the dive into the faster classes and work on starts, get yourself up front and focus ahead of you. I would assume your letting emotions pop your cork, stop being so mental don't let things ruin your race and focus on the 4 seconds ahead of you at all times. there's nothing behind you that's gonna make you go forward. Take a breath on the gate and remember what's going on and what you want to do and do your best to follow that plan. At all times it's about what's ahead.
This is probably the best, most real answer you are going to get. One of the most intellegent posts I've seen on this forum.

Jeff good on ya for answering this young man's question.

My two cents is one of my closest friend's father treated him like a hero when he won and a shunned bum if he didn't. It did not make any difference if he actually rode better in a field of good riders but got second. His father was happier to see him smoke a less talented field and win. My friend's head was affected by this.

Glad you identified this at 17 so hopefully won't go thru life with the flawed philosophy that winning is everything.

Before I get my head torn off for that last sentence winning is the goal but one IMO shouldn't cheat to win or be in your present situation.

My vibe is you have a good head on your shoulders to be man enough to ask your question. Best of luck.

I really do appreciate all of the helpful replies. I feel that my dad thinks for first race in a long time that i should ride C class necause he says that my arms wont hold up at kahoka mx. And i belive him. I get alote of arm pump from lack of riding. He says you will anniahlate them first lap but they will catch back up from just riding more and being able to hold on without as much arm pump. Ive only rode a few times this year. Money is so tight but im trying to pay for myself.

I am confused.

Are you implying that the op should move to Australia or race GPS instead of the nationals?

There is only one winner per race.

Ride with earbuds in, better concentration and you won't stress about someone being close behind you.

Tyler, Grampa will still be proud of you just for giving it your best, no matter where you finish.

I meant he should stick his competition's leg in a bag, add water and throw those fools off the closest bridge. Guaranteed to win the next race!

Tyler, at least you are owning up to your issues. That's step one. Good job. A little story for you: I was off a bike for 20 yrs. Money issues, girls, another story. Anyway, I never rode 125's, 250's. Last bike was a mini, then 20 years later at 33yo got a used 250 YZ. I was horrible. It took me all day to do a small double. Kept at it, kept at it. Eventually got decent, and have great friends and lots of memories and am still competing.
The fact you are out there riding and not playing video games and dicking off on your phone 24/7 is admirable. I worry about the future of the sport.
Moto isn't always about fun, sometimes it's about the challenge. Ideally both. Set goals, ride against a stop watch not how you stack up to others. It's about improving and unless you are getting paid to do it winning doesn't really mean shit except ego and bragging rights. The winner of C would get smoked in B, so on and so forth.
It's a sport you can do your whole life and the social aspect is as much or more important IMHO.

Motocross used to mean something else, not winning or losing. Maybe winning and not getting beat by your buddy or the guy wearing jeans, but no one was ever considered a loser. I still race with that attitude......I have been beaten by other riders but I've never lost a race.

I respect that you want to race again for the first time in years, but why not race at your level and just take whatever result you get. Dropping skill level for a better result is like taking the SAT after you've been through college, it is pointless. How do you think the other C class riders are going to feel when they see your practice times are the same as A/B. Also the race coordinators may not let you race C once they see your lap times in practice.
