Depends on exactly what protection you're looking for.

Personally, I'm a fan of those with good shoulder cups like the Fox Airframe or R3. IMO, the Roost 2 was the best one of all time.

Leatts 3DF line is pretty darn good. A tad expensive, but the most comfortable to wear with the highest (level 2) possible protection.

I've been using the Atlas Defender for the last 6 months. Fits perfectly with the Atlas brace (as well as any others), it can be configured in numerous ways (remove back plate etc) and fits nicely under the the jersey thanks to it's low profile. I don't even notice I have it on.

And to top it off, it's completely waterproof which means at the end of the day I can powerwash it down and don't have to wait for any straps etc. to dry!

Believe it or not, I wear a cycle gear house brand(Bilt) roost guard. It's the exact same thing as the fox proframe but half the cost. It's light weight but covers everything I want it to.

I wear a Leatt chest/back protector. Can't remember the model name but its the one with the certified impact rating or whatever. Fits great and has definitely saved me some cuts and bruises. A little pricier than the competition but worth it, IMO.

I wear the leatt 5.5 pro lite and it works great for me.

The RXR series of protectors has me interested. Their new release, "Bullet" is on my short list.
Not cheap (probably the most costly chest/back protector), but a visit to the hospital for X-Ray's is more costly.

IMHO HRP offers the best protection to ventilation. You can't beat the shoulder protection full hard shell and rib protection. Old school but they're functional.

TLD for sure, many of the top pros run them also and put a sticker over the TLD logo. Most wear under the jersey.

I currently use the Leatt HD 5.5 Pro because I wear a neck brace and it fits seamlessly. I also have an RXR strong flex which I believe probably gives more cushioning to the chest and back but I found that my neck brace would float up and become ineffective and possibly dangerous. I zip tied them together which sort of works ok. With the RXR you have to have the right pressure otherwise there's little protection because it's just rubber. I was also a little worried about having a foot peg hit you because I am not sure the air bladder wouldn't just puncture and then there's no protection. The new RXR bullet looks interesting but I've never seen an RXR in a shop to try on.

I have a big problem with chest protectors. They make them neck brace friendly so if you don't wear one half of your back is left unprotected. I just bought a tld and it looks awesome but the protection starts way down the cervicals!!

I have the Fox Pro Frame. Works great. You can get a china clone on eBay for under $50.

I have worn a Fox Race Frame for years. New version Air Frame. Great protection, and ventilation in the summer.

I had no idea HRP was still around. I see they call it motorcross. They've drifted from their roots apparently.

As an offroad guy...and crashing in rocks, and cactus, and trees, and roots...often at high speeds...I trust my body to this:

The chest and back are an entirely separate piece than the shoulders and elbows...so for moto, I don't wear the shoulder and elbow pads and just the chest and back...I also remove the kidney belt for moto as well. But for hare and hounds...I'd cover every inch of my body in plastic if I could (and with that, I almost have...just my thighs and hips aren't covered in plastic).

Definitely not THE most protection but I wear the under jersey TLD 5900 and it's sweet.

You would be correct.

It's is a bit warmer than a traditional chest protector...as long as you keep moving, if you stop (no air flow) it gets hot fast. So in hot temps, not racing, and riding all day long, where you'll be stopping off and on for various lengths of time...yeah, you'd cook yourself.

I've tumbled across the desert several times in it, and have got up with no road rash at all. (I did break ribs in it in a crash once...but nothing could prevent that). So in the heat, in a race (no stopping at all), its worth the extra heat. Riding all day, NOT racing? I'd leave it at home (or just wear the chest and back protection).

I'm an off road guy too and started wearing this in the spring. Its very slim and you can barely tell I have it under my jersey. I wear a thor tank top under jersey thing under it to help keep me cool and honestly I can barely tell I'm wearing it. What I like is the chest and arms are CE level 1 for impact and the back is level 2 which you don't really see in the off road stuff. I come from a road race background so having real CE protection is important to me. The elbows zip off which I personally do. Also if you don't wear a neck brace the back protection goes all the way up you back but it will work with all the neck braces.

This one?

I wear a Fox Proframe right now but I'm thinking about buying that TLD protector. Does it really protect or is it only roost? Because I always ride sand so roost is no problem for me.

In this day and age of neck braces and companies trying to accommodate them with their protectors, I was a little surprised to read on the RXR website, in the "Bullet" protectors description, that they don't recommend the use of neck braces with their protectors.
So here we have potentially some of the best chest/back protectors, but neck braces are not recommend..
