I don't know how serious we can take it but Gajser implies in the dirt shark vid that if he wins the title this year he'll go to the states next year

He admits that he sandbags in the feeder class to boost his numbers. Time to race with the best dodger. If you want to be the best race with the best.

Look, the 250 and MX2 are full professional classes. No one can be a sandbagger.
If Herlings was using a false name and lying about his age to race Loretta's, that would be sandbagging.
Was RC sandbagging by not going to the GPs after destroying the US competition? 24-0 twice, and how many wins?
If you want skill based classes, there needs to a promotion/relegation system.

I'd not be surprised when / if Gajser wins the MXGP World Championships, that Honda would 'open the cheque books' to keep him in the GPs for at least a year as the Reigning Champion. Getting the World Championships is so very important to Honda, and displaying it / backing it up , just as important.

As for Herlings and MX2?

I've always been utterly opposed to the 23 year old rule. And, any limitations on titles that can be won. It's a 250 World Championships, in and of itself.

But, Herlings attitude has left me cold, for quite a while. Fair enough, I could see and support his desire to break the records of a Gaston Rahier ,Harry Everts and Alessio Chiodi with their 3 Championships ( all, by the way, older than 23 for all, or most of their 125 titles) , and get 4 in a row. Well, it didn't happen - injuries do that. Mind you, a 250F is no 125, so really, it was not comparable. His constant going on about breaking records / surpassing others has diminished him in many followers of the sports minds. Of course, once / if he gets past the 101(?), it will be there in cold, hard statistics, but it will not mean a huge amount to educated followers of the sport - but hell, they are far fewer in numbers than casual fans, who, in the future, will just see those numbers.

Without a doubt, the young bloke is mindbogglingly talented. I've witnessed his devastating speed and style in person many times. The only ones I could put up there with him is Antonio Cairoli, when he'd just decide it was time to carve up the field, Stefan Everts, for so many, many reasons, and RC. But his arrogance has hardened my attitude to him. Though, the injuries he's gone through, have toned that down a bit, at least some times, recently.

I'm sure he doesn't give a f**k about these sort of writings about him - He's become a multi- millionaire through his efforts and talents, and probable was in his teens.

I guess RV sandbagged all those years when he could have been racing the GP's.

After this year, the dude has to go because of the rule change. And he should have anyway. KTM can't save him this time.

Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings will almost certainly be part of the MXGP class of the FIM Motocross World Championship in 2017. The twenty-one year old and currently undefeated MX2 series leader was considering another term on the factory 250SX-F but the decision was largely taken out of his hands with a revision to the rules for the series dictating a rider has to move out of the category after winning two titles or having defended the crown twice. With a 148 point lead in the standings Herlings is firmly on course for his third No.1 plate in five years.

Allegedly the FIM MXGP Commission and MSMA were in agreement after a meeting in the wake of the British Grand Prix to reinstate the rule over the maximum number of championships an athlete can obtain in MX2, and is another limitation on the class along with the twenty-three year age ceiling designed to propel the best talent on 250s into the MXGP fray.
Herlings is on fifty-eight Grand Prix wins and has yet to be knocked from the top step of the MX2 podium this year. The Dutchman has made no secret of his desire to chase records and statistics and it was this motivation that had earnestly left him undecided for 2017 and the last year of his works KTM contract. ‘There is not much to say,” he offered exclusively. “If it’s the rule then it’s the rule. Normally the plan was to move up anyway. Now there might not be much of an option.”

“The long-term plan was to be one of the greatest of all-time and I felt like I had nothing left to learn in MX2 any more. I might be one of the only guys to have won more than ten GPs in the class,” he added. “I’ve won two championships and lost two through injury but there isn’t anybody who has accomplished four titles in this class and that was my main goal while winning as many GPs to get to the ‘100’ as soon as possible. I guess the rule has come in because they want to make MXGP the main attraction and I understand that; it is the premier class and the one everybody wants to see. It brings a better show. From my point of view I have mixed feelings about the change but if that’s the rule then we have to accept it and go from there.”

KTM are also understood to be supportive of Herlings switching motorcycles although it is not yet clear if he will become part of Claudio De Carli’s set-up alongside Tony Cairoli and Glenn Coldenhoff (both contracted for 2017) or remain in the MX2 awning. It also looks likely that ‘84’s 250 saddle will go to Spanish sensation Jorge Prado who is on the verge of confirming his first Grand Prix term in ’17 and keeping patient with his move to the AMA Supercross scene.

The FIM are likely to publish the revised ruling sometime before the FIM Congress this autumn and the provisional 2017 calendar (featuring eighteen fixed rounds and one reserve date as well as a return to Sweden and possible removal of Spain from the list) will be announced imminently. Herlings can already start to think about preparation for 2017 in the upcoming summer break in the MXGP schedule although the hairline fracture of his right heel is proving troublesome.

“We planned to start testing [the 450] in this small break and then I had a small fracture in my heel and that changed a lot,” he said. “I was advised to take two weeks off. So we will see. Our main idea was to test and make a decision [on 2017] with a view to moving up anyway. KTM would like to see me in MXGP and I would not say they are forcing me but I’m sure they would prefer to see me in the big boys class.”

The GP's didn't have the level of competition back when RC raced like they do now. RC was the best and was racing the premier class. People can argue up and down that the GP's best at the time (everts) could have kept up to or beaten RC but it's just not true. RC was a lot better than Everts and everyone else in the GP's.

lol...... we will never know for sure as he never raced the MXGP ..... just opinions , he beat em at MXON but as you all say its just a single race
wasnt it the general opinion RV would come over and dominate as he was the best in the world ? he tried and we know how that ended .
there is no doubt about RC and him being the GOAT , but nobody knows what would have happend if he would have gone to the MXGP ......as it didnt happen

Great to finally see Herlings in MXGP. its been a bore with him this year. Or basically for years everytime he was at a race and fit.

Having said that i still believe they should get rid of the age limit. I dont understand why it would be bad if Anstie or Tonkov wanted to stay in the class at age 24 or 25. Or if Coldenhoff wanted to move back to MX2 next year.

I know one thing. If Gajser and Romain can't beat him when he moves up. There's going to be a lot of looooong boring years in MXGP. Because currently it doesn't look like anyone else is on the come up that can hang with him.

I agree, it should be like the 250 class in SX - championships/points based, not age based.

RV won a race out of his first 3 then got injured. If you don't think he would've been there at the end fighting for the championship you're delusional. I love the GP's, I love the racing and I have no problem admitting that the top guys could come here and compete for the championship. But I also believe the top guys here could jump series and do the same. I'm a firm believer that the cream always rises to the top. Take Roczen, Tomac and Dungey throw them into the GP's and they'd be fighting for the championship. Take Gajser, Febvre and Cairoli and put them in the AMA series and they'd be right there too. There's always going to be a learning curve for both series. Look at Roczen. He didn't win a 250 lites championship and I honestly believe that's because it took him a while to get used to the humidity, the different format etc. When he got to the 450s he had adapted and is enroute to his 2nd 450 MX championship.

And you're right, we will never know for sure what would've happened if RC went to the GP's. But I have no doubt what so ever he would've won. You won't change my opinion on it.

Didn't Everts get thumped by Kevin Windham at the USGP in 1999? The same Kevin Windham who never had anything for RC? (sorry to Kdub, you're awesome and had a great career.)

Team sponsors are the only difference. Roger Harvey, HRC General Manager – MXGP has stated this many times in interviews.

I know one thing. If Gajser and Romain can't beat him when he moves up. There's going to be a lot of looooong boring years in MXGP. Because currently it doesn't look like anyone else is on the come up that can hang with him.
Things change quickly in MX racing, and it's possible that any of Herling's current competition can rise to his level, over time. What about Prado?
I wouldn't be overly concerned about long, boring years. Roczen has dominated the 450 class, in the AMA, but the racing has been far from boring.
