Getting back into riding after a 10 year break. Advice please

Edited Date/Time 5/10/2016 5:23pm
I am ecstatic to say I am getting back into riding after a 10 year break! I moved away from home in 2006 to attend University and sold my gear off. I always planned to get back into riding but didn't expect to have such an extended break! I have still followed the sport and checked in here weekly.

My steed was always a 2000 YZ125 which was a great bike and I loved spending time working on it. Rather than go out and buy a brand new bike, I have decided to keep it cheap and have found an 05 YZ250F for what I believe is a good deal. It looks clean and doesn't look like it's had much abuse. Freshly rebuilt motor, suspension set up for close to my weight plus it has a couple little extras which suit me, black rims, retro yellow graphics and plastic.

I have already done some research on the 03-05 era YZ250F's and it seems they were fairly reliable provided filters and oil were kept regularly changed. I was confident enough to rebuild the top-end on the 125, but I am thinking the 4-stroke will be a bit out of my league. I will be pulling the suspension and greasing the moving and pivot points for my own peace of mind.

I would like everyone's opinions and experience on these bikes. Anything in particular to check right off the bat and what to keep an eye on?

Thanks for your input!

I was in the same boat about a year and a half ago. Rode and raced a lot and took about a ten year break.

I went the two stroke route, 125 first, loved it but I'm not as fast as I was so I felt like some extra HP would help. Sold it, got a YZ250 and hated it. Liked the extra ponies but the power wasn't what I remembered. I could never get comfortable on it and you have to be willing to ride fast to make the thing work. Not a good mix when you get arm pump in two laps!

I sold that, and got a 16 250f. So far I love that thing. So much more fun and I know part of it is just not being as fast but still having enough power to jump everything. I feel smoother on it also.

The four strokes aren't the devil like everyone says. Just keep up on the maintenance and be sure to watch how you are riding it. Not too much over revving, as cool as it may sound. I would suggest getting an 06 if possible. The suspension is better than the 05.

Other than that, ride and have fun. I started riding moto first and that was probably the wrong direction to go. So I went out and rode some woods stuff and that helped with just riding and getting comfortable on my bike. Might want to try that. Now, I am slowly getting better and starting to feel like I can do what I want rather than just holding on. Its going to take some time but don't get discouraged.

Go back to your roots. Buy a ping-ting-ping-pinger.

I had an 05 yz250f. They're bullet proof. Change oil and filter after every three rides.

Buy a 2 stroke, have good health insurance, and most of all have fun.

Don't go straight to the track like I did. I damn near killed myself the first day out, my mind knew what to do but I coulddnt get my body to respond quick enough. It's much harder than you remember it being and with having 10yrs off, the throttle control and core strength required will not be up to par. Take a few weekends and screw around somewhere other than the track where you can just have fun without having to focus too hard.

I finally picked the bike up. Got the previous owner to start it up and it did so easily and sounded fine while running. Since I have got it home and had it running more I have noticed that coolant is slowly running out from near the pump. I am waiting to collect my tools from my parents house next weekend before I can start delving into it!

Here she is!

Good looking bike!

Since I last posted in this thread, things changed a bit! I quickly sold the 05 YZF for a little profit and was split on whether to spend Winter re-doing my old YZ125. Anyway, I thought stuff it, I want to ride now and a new bike it was!

2016 YZ250F. Have only been able to ride it around the house yard so far, but already loving it! Once broken in and given a good weekends ride I am going to get a Rocket full system and GYTR tuner to tinker with it!

Very happy to be officially a rider again! Smile

I quit too for about 10 years. I didn't even sit on a bike. Seemed like everything came back pretty quick I'd say it took about 3-4 weeks to get my confidence back up. I would say it had a lot to do with having a wife and kids at home. I didn't want to make a chance in getting hurt right away. Although, months to get stamina. I had a bunch of different bikes from 450's, 250, 2t's and 250f's. I actually found I had the most fun on 125's pretty much where I left off. If I were to start racing again I would go with a 250f. Nice bike by the way too.

nice.you move fast, lol. lots of info on the web for your new bike. i have a 15. all the normal stuff oil filter grease it soon. very little from factory. if want the exhaust for the look thats cool, but stock is so good. i couldnt justify the cash for performance .look at mxas pipe shootout. clip those little fastner clips off the airbox and use a flat head. i lost 3 before i did this.be slow pulling the air filter, the intake is easier to get dirt in than a standard motor design.buy radiator guards. they bend easy. you can drill holes and pull the gas cap tube thru the airbox. looks cleaner.the stock chain is impressive.just clean and i adjusted it 3 times in 30 hrs.
dont rev it on the stand-shift when its needed-dont blast water around the electrics-do ride it every chance you getWoohoo

I know that you now have a new bike but don't be too scared of a 4-stroke top end, it's only nuts and bolts, you don't need any mystical powers to get in it and have a look.
My brother having an 04 rmz 250 helped us, we either got in and re shimmed or swapped valves etc or didn't race, heck a mate and me even did a top end re shim of his kxf 250 (again an 04) half way through an enduro when it wouldn't fire up after re fueling.

A little improvement Smile I never got into the 250f thing, always preferred my 125 (01-04 era) but after riding the 05 model I had and then reading the drastic improvements from 2014 onwards I was pretty confident I would like the new model. Smile

Haha, yeah I sort of went from 8 years of not considering the time "not being right" to buying 2 bikes in 2 months lol! Very happy with the way I went though! I have stocked up on OEM filters and have purchased a 20L of oil so that will keep be sorted for a while yet! I have read the MXA shootout and agree it appears they don't add much, just move the power around. I have spoken to DL and he is building there "race spec" system for me so I assume should be a better system than those tested in MXA. I keep reading that those clips get knocked around a bit. I haven't had a proper ride on the bike yet with full gear on so I will wait and see but I am thinking I should probably just cut them now. Thanks for the tips, that's the exact thing I was looking for! Cheers smoothies862!

Good on you for getting back into it! That's good to hear it didn't take too long for you to get that confidence back! I am thinking it will be similar for me, just riding around the house to break it in and the form felt way off. Getting my first full weekend of riding in 8 years next weekend, beyond excited for it Smile Thanks for the kind comments mate.

Thanks jeffro503! Very happy with my choice! I sure will thanks, it's great to be back riding! I always browsed the forums and kept up to date with the AMA/MA/GP over the years but just didn't ride! Have a good one!

Unless you are a pro level rider that spends a lot of time on the Rev limiter you should get a good 3 or 4 years before rebuild. That's assuming you check/shim valves regularly. Have fun mate.
