I moved to north houston area about 4 years ago, grew up in AZ, CA and NV. Tracks here are great especially 3 Palms, Rio is decent and Cycle Ranch is also great.

As far as the food... the tex mex blows! If you're used to good west coast mex then you'll be very disappointed. I haven't had good mexican food since i've been here. BBQ is good but I'm not a too picky with that and there's in-n-out in DFW and austin so that's a plus.

I've had Mexican food out on the west coast on several occasions that left me less than impressed and longing for my Tex Mex. Don't attempt to ruin that for me.Laughing I'm always willing to go back and try again though! Would have to stop by the Stuft Surfer for breakfast first.

In Texas it's all private land,at least around Lubbock.. You can't just load up go to the desert and ride. I have to drive for almost two hours to ride for free.
Yes very true and that is the worst part about Texas for dirt bikes. We have tons of tracks but very few public open land places to ride.

And I did not realize that MX Oasis was a Chatfield deal. Is that right?

I like Tex-mex but it isn't Mexican. Some friends come to town expecting Mexican at a Tex-mex place.

It's like people going to a Cajun place expecting it to be a seafood restaurant, yeah they have some seafood stuff there but Ain't even really that close to a seafood restaurant.

Plenty of Mexican joints too but you gotta look. I eat breakfast at a place down the road where no one speaks English. I just point at the menu. Best damn chorizo and egg plate with rice and beans you can find!!

Tex-Mex and real Mexican food are definitely different.

You never know just how important frozen margaritas and queso are until you can't get them anymore.

I agree you are not getting the same quality of margarita with a frozen, but in Texas it's all about refreshment and getting something insanely cold into your body... The alcohol is just a bonus!

Rock my friend, you just gave yourself up. Only tequila rookies order margaritas period. Of course I like a good margarita myself but you can get away with shit tequila in margs. Straight up is where the aficionados sort things out. That's where that high end Patron fits in, good stuff. I've had a few others on the lower end of the scale that were quite good as well. As for a decent margarita when I'm not squeezing limes myself....

I was also in the first group of riders that the track sponsored. I ran a few Cross Creek stickers on my bike and got to practice for free. Cool deal! Hell, I just remembered - my picture was even on their flyer!

Also ended my racing career there with my ankle injury...



Crosscreek was definitely the bomb when it was open!!!

Going back a ways, but I remember watching all the up and coming amateurs racing Lake Whitney in the late 80s on their way to making the pros ranks. When prepped, the Lake Whitney dirt was spectacular! I can still see the early morning mist mixing with the premix as they waited for the gate to drop for the first moto of the day. Something to be said about the sound a mini or 125 bouncing off the rev limiter around Lake Whitney’s big, sand-whooped, sweepers.

Lake Whitney was the best track in Texas while it was around. It got insanely rough. I have many memories crashing my brains out late in my last moto of the day because the track was just brutal. I also remember a couple of times they got a snow machine and made the mountain into a ski slope with a couple of jumps for a sled. I crashed my brains out on that a few times too.

My dad use to tell me stories about the first time he ever saw Roger Decoster in person as a kid. It was at Lake Whitney and he said Roger was blowing through the big sweeper faster than he thought a dirt bike could even go.

If I ever won the lottery I'd buy the property and open the track back up. I don't play the lottery though so I'm counting on somebody else to have a similar plan.

Geez – didn’t even know it was closed now. I remember one weekend Hannah was teaching a riding school there. I was out riding laps when he came out to loosen up before the school started. I remember hearing him coming and seeing him going. He was gone in a blink of an eye.

This area has so many good tracks that folks have already mentioned. I love Underground, Oak Hill, and River Valley. Don't care for Village, bit its ok. Swan is also a great track, I just wish it was closer.
The dirt is 2nd to none, and yes, you can ride all year here.
My 2 cents: Kansas City has no moto scene, but their BBQ is way better than anything I've ever had In TX, and I've tried a lot of different places.
Kawasa84, I moved here (DFW) from Iowa as well, about 3 years ago. Would be cool to come chat at you about Iowa tracks if I see you at a local track around here.

I am newish to dfw from mammoth in ca. I am usually at river valley but village creek and badlands are really fun as well. Haven't had a chance to venture out much farther yet.

Just took my first trip ever out to Texas and it was love at first sight. The Hill Country, DFW, Houston, all of those places were great, the food was amazing and the friendliest people on the planet. The MX scene looks incredible as well, kind of bummed about the lack of public land to ride but I am a track guy at heart. The missus and I are coming back for another look this Summer, will have to take in a few tracks to check out. Texas is the best.

OK, if y'all are gonna come out here anyway, let us know when and where--there are some great folks on this board that can give you an assist based on where you'll be and what's going on at that time, and will happily meet up with you or lend a hand in any way.

You really can't beat TX, though. I hit Pala, GH and other So Cal tracks every time I go visit my kids (and have raced on most all of them from the late 1970s to this year), and still think the TX tracks are so sweet. Freestone National track is so tough on race day, Underground is phenomenal, Rio Bravo and Burleson are a great throwback in time, Red Rock is just so awesome (probably my favorite, but it's just a practice track), Village Creek has both a great day and night track, Swan is always great (but the local old guys there are tough as nails!) and I haven't even ridden River Valley or 3 Palms yet, which I keep hearing are amazing!

Compound 77. Usually pretty good pros like Canard, Albertson, etc there. Thackerville is a great sand type track. Both are just across the border in Oklahoma. Thackerville is an on and off again situation so check before you go.

Yeah, Milikins/Merge place is nice. Is Thackervilles the old I-35MX? I know Nidays walked away from there a year or so ago.

Yeah, I-35MX. So if Nidays left does that mean it is closed? Any reason why they left?
