A good doctor will always recommend trying to least invasive stuff first. You want to avoid back surgery if at all possible.
1. I did 6 weeks of PT. No results.
2. I had 3 epidermal injections. No results.
3. I had a Discogram which is an invasive diagnostic test that uses x-rays to examine the intervertebral discs of your spine. A special dye is injected into the injured disc or series of discs. The dye makes the disc visible on a fluoroscope monitor and x-ray film. Discograms are used to locate precisely which discs are damaged and are causing back pain. The doctor was able to identify which disc was causing such great pain.
4. L5S1 fusion surgery. This was a serious surgery and about as intense of pain I can ever handle. The first two weeks were brutal hell. After 4 weeks I started to feel slowly better. You will do lots of PT. At the 6 month mark I was feeling much better. Even went to Disney World for 7 days will not much issue.
By the year mark I was 100% better and really felt like I had regained my life back. Yes, I still have occasional pains and soreness but nothing like before. It's manageable and mostly only gets sore when I have bad posture or sit around not doing much. The more active I am the better my back feels. Which is a good sign. I'm 18 months post op now and feel great and very grateful to have had a doctor who went through the proper steps and ultimately gave me my active life back.
Hope this info helps and good luck. Lower back pain is no joke.
Pit Row
I am going to a sports massage therapist and it's doing better.
Great that your back is better. Doesn't it feel great not to be the guy with the bad back anymore? I raced (make that rode) the Sunday Vet World and yesterday hoisted a 50 pound bag of alfalfa oats horse feed. Either of those activities four years ago would have sidelined me for at least 3 if not 4 days.
Well guess there is one I can do but it doesn't do anything for my injuries :-)
I went to a great back dr in dallas a and he finally did a mylogram and discovered that the bones on the back of my bottom vertebrae were broken off allowing my bottom vertebrae and pelvis too slip out of joint. 2 surgeries later and I'm worse off now than before I had surgery
