1981 st. petersburg 250 national----105 degrees. AMA said stop for water. 1st moto, everyone stopped for water except hannah and howerton. 2nd moto, everyone stopped and got a drink. i think i stopped more than once. not one rider was wearing panties.

big deal doc, we both raced 40's plus 2 in the heat and humidity. these are different times...i mean if they would have shortened the motos to 5 minutes plus 1 lap we might have been able to win one of those suckers. Wink

WOW! I raced the lake whitney 500 national at 117 in the shade and 200% humidity. stackable won and howerton 2nd...i think they were the only finishers too.

That sucks for sure. But, he was not in the best of shape. He has to be like 27 percent or higher body fat. That alone will cause problems when in extreme heat.

I will now have to re-think my entire existence...I have been living my life believing...ney KNOWING that Roger, Marty, Bob, Gerrit, Tony, Kent, Brad, Heikki...etc had put every ounce of energy into their riding. I always thought the only thing that slowed them down was fear of breaking the bike. Now I find out that they weren't "all out"...just pacing themselves to prevent overexertion. What a naive piece of crap I am.

Didn't Hannah refuse to run the A/C in his motel rooms so he could get more acclimated? I understand todays riders run "full bore" for 30 +2, but the old guys ran 40 +2 on machines that had virtually NO suspension (by todays standards). This sport has always been about more than how fast you are...it's been about how TOUGH you are. That hasn't changed...who's tough enough to WFO a bike for the longest. I don't wanna come across as a psycho...I don't want to see anyone with heat stroke, and I also don't like to see someone gork a jump and get run over and hurt. Both are unfortunate but are always going to be part of moto. And I too have endured the heat/humidity at Rio Bravo...they ran "On Any Sunday" projected on some bedsheets on Sat before the race...I didn't know which was gonna kill me quicker, the heat or the skeeters.
+1 Out doors its about going fast and endurance to the finish. Think tortoise and the hare.

Wait till they got to Budds Creek! I am a MD boy and its typically 90-99% humidity every day and 90-100 deg.

The AMA Nationals went from 40+2 in the late70's-early 80's.

They've been lowering the forecast high for the last several days, from 102 down to only 96 now. That's nothing. That's no hotter than it was two years ago.

If it was actually going to be 102, that'd be different.

Anyone remember Johnny Omara at Indain Dunes between Nationals. 105 deg. He would put a hooded sweatshirt over top his riding gear and do a couple 20min. motos.

The southeastern national, if it ever becomes reality, is going to be another sweltering event. Our heat index is already at 106 degrees here. July and August easily see 110-112 heat index.

In the summer humidity, it's like breathing through a straw here.

Damn straight! I was outside in it yesterday getting my tennis on and damn if I wasnt soaked in a good ten minutes. The pro's would love the scattered showers we always have, that makes the sauna effect so much better haha

In the summer, if you use even warm water to shower, unless you have the A/C down 70-72 degrees, you will be sweating before you even get the water dried off of you after you get out.

Turn on a water hose,and the water is an easy 100 degrees for the first 20 seconds.

You just don't adjust to the SE summer climates in a week.

That summer time hose water will scold your ass too, if your not careful. I found that out the hard way one summer when I was younger!

You old timers and couch potatoes , don't get it, for one thing, there is no such thing as pacing in modern moto, and second, being all tough and manly has nothing to do with heat stroke, in fact thats the problem. few yrs back Metty didn't back off all the way to the finish line and than promptly keeled over, right on his bike!

It's amazing how many "real men" that flood these motoboards today.


Most on here have no idea how fast of pace todays riders run. Would you all like it better if we increased the time of the motos so the riders would slow their pace?

I have an honest question for you. Did you ride at the same level as one of todays top pros?

Things are much different today than they were twenty or thirty years ago.

What is the hottest temps in the gp's? Just curious. If there is no global warming then why have things changed and why do we have to start babying every aspect of life? Is it a politically correct thing because that is destroying our country in so many ways? If it is dangerous temps then they must do what is right for the safety of the riders, we would all feel like hell if something happened to one of them in the heat. I just want to know what has changed over the past 30 years of moto temperature wise. Motocross is run rain or shine I thought. Are my grandkids not going to know what motocross is only indoor 13 minute sx races? Soon it will be to hot, to dangerous, to big and no pledge of alliegence, no religion, no spanking, no manners, no this no that no moto. Pusification of a nation of America republic of China.

Things are much different today than they were twenty or thirty years ago.
Hey, I tell ya what Jim...I seem to recall Smitty, Hannah, Howerton, Glover, Barnett etc haulin ass for the entire moto. They sure didn't look to me like they were "pacing themselves". They were flying the whole race!
If you can run that pace the entire moto, then you're the man that day! And you stand an excellent of winning the race. If not, then you'd best back it off and pace yourself. Just the way it is. "Survival of the fittest', so to speak.
And yes, I raced back in the day in the Whitney/Houston/So TX area. I can remember it being in the high 90s(very often high 90s or hotter)with the same humidity. I know exactly what that temp feels like under racing cond-with shoulder pads on under my jersey. It was hot as hell! And we sure as hell weren't pacing ourselves.
Yes, these guys are riding faster than we did back in the day. They've also got a lot better eqpt to race on than we did. The sport has evolved too. But that doesn't negate the fact that the racing, the attitude and desire has changed(well...yeah it has too in my opinion-but that's another topic).
