Years ago, my wife had a cousin in Henderson, Nevada who was a member of some really over the top straight edge group. Real violent and covered in lame straight edge tattoos. He is a massive guy. Even back in those days he was something like 6'4 and 300 pounds. One day, they caught a couple of guys who had left a bar and were walking around fairly drunk. They almost beat the guys to death. Her cousin ended up doing time and later ended up in a mental health facility. Really the only time I have heard of straight edge before. So my association with them is not a positive one.

On Thursday April 7th, it will be 21 years since I was introduced to the idea of the drug and alcohol-free punk movement called straight edge.

In those 21 years:

I've never beaten anyone up

I've never "preached" my "lifestyle" onto others

I've seen countless shitheads militant about straight edge "beliefs" simply as an excuse to be thugs

I've lost a couple great friends who struggled with addiction and lost.

I watched my father die a horrible death from lung cancer after a lifetime of smoking, poor diet, and a sedentary lifestyle.

What have I learned in those 21 years? Everyone can make their own choices.

I have made the choices that I felt were best for ME.

My advice @dirtriderskrew? Don't worry about the critics, just do your best to live a positive life, and lead by example. If someone takes offense to that, it's their problem.

Sad but true. Kudos to GabrielJ, his post summed it up perfectly. Sadly, straight edge took a wrong turn in the late '80's when the mouth breathers and knuckle draggers misinterpreted it's meaning.
