After reading the vital hipster thread, it got me thinking. I love moto culture/ supercross/ cafe racers/ MotoGP, etc. I am a 28 year old skinny jeans wearing, "hipster". However, my dad rides 365 days a year, my brother rides, I have worked on a AMA superbike team and at a moto dealership.

But, I don't ride regularly. I don't own a bike. Financial decisions and housing options leave no space for a bike. It's on the agenda to get a bike soon.

I watch Supercross every Saturday. My wife has fallen in love with the sport and she can't wait for the races and edits to drop.

Am I one of those hipsters and am I not worthy of being a fan? I haven't missed a SX main in 4 years I spend my hard earned money to support moto, purchasing tickets to races, tuning in on Saturdays and posting on social media about the sport to help grow. I read vital and racer x everyday. I like fasthouse and deus ex machina.

Reading on vital it seems like you aren't in the club unless you can jump 100 foot triples, slammed a beer with Roger in '78 and have a mint 98 Kawi 2T.

Just a few observations from a dude who loves moto and anything with two wheels to be honest but wears skinny jeans.

Interested to see where this thread goes... You sound like alot of the "fans" I know in this sport now days. You love the sport but cost has caused you to put moto on the back burner. Its not as easy as say football where you go invest $15 and your playing football in the front yard. Moto is a very expensive hobby for sure.
PS I think theres plenty of us lurkers around here that consider ourselves core fans but still cant go out and hit 100 foot triples!

No monster hat. No neck tattoo. Just a ratty old ranger and yes I know who the hurricane is. Haha.

I was hoping for some real discussion on this, but I should have known better about Vital!

If you like bikes, racing, and are a fan, then you are a fan. Don't let the OG keyboard warriors bother you. It don't matter what they think!

According to many here on Vital, life cannot be allowed to get in the way of moto. You need to be a little more irresponsible towards all your other responsibilities, be willing to sue anyone for anything as long as it isn't a track owner who drives a tractor around during practice or has an open culvert next to a whoop section, must support your local dealer at all costs even if they don't offer to order what you need, etc. etc. etc. But you REALLY need to dump the skinny jeans. Unless of course they have rhinestone crosses on the pockets and match your Affliction shirt.

I don't see the problem. Why would you want to be 'core' anyway? ; )

When you translate the 'core' 110ft triples from vital speak, they become 40ft tables in reality anyway.

As for the 'skinny' jeans, if you're over 19, you should really reconsider your fashion choices!

Haha I had a friend like that, he was always telling tall tales of his moto skills. He was full of shit, but we all knew it and he was harmless except to himself when he crashed. so we accepted him for what he was, and had fun with it!

According to Vital MX bylaws, you are not a true fan.

You have to love 2-strokes, ride every day, race every weekend, hate supercross style mx tracks, be into vintage bikes (sorry Newman), clown on someone's choice of gear, clown on someone's choice of jeans, be an expert on neck braces, be an expert on helmets, be a expert on all things moto, bitch because the whoops aren't big enough, bitch because the whoops aren't long enough, bitch about Ralph and Jeff, bitch about Ms.Supercross, bitch about the cost of bikes these days, and generally bitch about everything and everyone at the races. Basically to be a true fan you have to hate everything about the sport.

PS...wear what ever you like dude. I'm sure most of the skinny jeans haters are wearing a creased trucker hat, baggy oversized dad jeans, and a dirty fox shirt with grease and ketchup stains on it.

You're fine! Keep wearing skinny jeans and fashionable clothes. It's positive since a large chunk of the mx community isn't like "us"(since i'm also into fashion)! The pro racing need more people like you, people like you that don't ride are potentially bringing in outside industry sponsors!

And what's up with the "skinny jeans hate" thing on vital lately? Grown men wearing flat caps, baggy jeans and a tanktop is just embarrassing in my opinion(thank god for JT$, repping Burberry)!

Haha. I love this. When I read this it's exactly what I think of and why it frustrates me to be a fan of the sport. Riders need more money but when they do something to make more money outside of the normal industry they are selling out. Everything contradicts themselves in the vital world.

Don't take anything too serious, there are guys that weigh 280 pounds that will sit here and rant about how a pro rider doesn't know work ethic and he should put more effort in because he posted something fun on instagram.

Its the same people that cant let go of the 70's/80's racing and two strokes. The same people that wear Columbia hiking shoes 365 with tube socks scrunched down to their ankles that disapprove of everything in the sport these days. I don't ride anymore either due to a variety of reasons but I don't think it makes me any less of a fan. I don't train MMA, play football or drive a short course truck but I enjoy those sports as well. Keep on keepin on.

According to most the guys on here, you are not a fan because you have "never raced a day in your life"...lol

I love watching baseball, but I've never swung at a pitch. I love the NFL, but I've never played a single down of football. I love watching pro surfers, but I haven't paddled out in years.

I have one buddy who has never riden and has zero desire to, but loves watching the races. I have another buddy that lovess to race his vintage bike every weekend who couldn't care less about the racing.
I know a former national champ who doesn't ride and can't stand the industry, and doesn't watch the races he doesn't have to, but its how he makes his living.

Theres so many levels of fandom, you're a fan, not a kook, don't even doubt it.

I myself don't ride and according to my buddies that do, all they say is that I am way too much in to moto to not ride. Other than that I hear nothing about not being a true fan, hell I know more about moto than my buddies that do ride

Don't worry too much about what anyone thinks or says on here. You don't need a quack's validation for what you already know to be true. Of course you are a fan!

I laugh a lot any time I hear people get so bent out of shape over the clothes people wear. The shape of people's hats and their tailoring of their pants seem to get some people upset, especially "skinny jeans". I'm certainly not a hipster but I freaking HATE baggy pants although I'm not going to insult somebody for wearing them.

And I'll just leave this photo here of some nice pants.

You can be a fan, you just can't have an opinion. I have been following supercross for years, but I have never thrown a leg over a dirt bike. I wanted to ride when I was kid, but my folks were not supporting that action, so I ended up going car racing when I got older. Once my season starts I tune out moto/super cross, but come November I am looking forward to A1.
I understand where a lot of the guys come from with some complaints though. I've been to Southwick twice, and the first time my mind was blown by the track. The, demanding as hell sand surface, the frog pond, the rough as hell downhill that looked like a double black diamond, I was just awestruck that guys could just pick a line and hammer around that place. The next time I went I was disappointed by the track, it had really been sanitized, and seemed more like a superspeedway than a mx track. If I was a rider during that evolution I would be bitching too.
