Should MX bikes come with OEM hour meters?

Of courese they should have factory hour meters (or even odometers)...Every bike on a classified site has "low hours"...no matter how trashed they are.

It eliminates the need for people to lie.

I'm all for it.

Yes, although unless it was something built into the ECU (which I think already is on some bikes) a lot of people would find ways to get rid of them.

I agree that its not super useful from a sales perspective, but it would be awesome for maintenance! Great for a guy like me who doesnt want to spend 50$ on a dumb piece of electronics.

All of the new FI bikes have ECUs that will tell you total hours (on that ECU anyhoo). The reset you are talking about, in the case of the Yamaha GYTR tuner anyway, does not reset the ECU hours, it just zeroes out the meter when you ask it to. Once you plug it back in, it shows the total again. All of the manufacturers now can hook up a tool to read hours on the bike...

Nice for maintenance, but for selling? It's up to the buyer to know what he/she is getting into.

Great information and thanks for the contributions.

The built in ECU meter would work fine except if I plug in a Vortex or Athena/GET ECU while I own the bike then put by stock ignition back on when I'm ready to sell correct? Good news is the majority of enthusiasts don't swap ignitions.

I assume then when you go to look at a used FI bike you can ask to plug in your tuner to look at the total hours?
Seller: Would you like to ride it? Prospective buyer: No thanks I didn't brink any gear but I would like to plug into your ECU if I may? The times they are a changing.

I feel like I did when I saw a KTM being jumped started by a car back in 2008 at the Hi Torque ride day at GH. Man these bikes have gotten so sophisticated!

Look grieby I'm old enough to be your father and I raced much more at 58 years old then you ever will, if you took the time to read my post about the 242 hour perfectly maintained bike which was a yz250f most buyers could care less about the condition of the bike and look at the hours, so I take the hour meter off my bike my integrity is good enough that I don't need an hour meter, would you buy a used car with over 100k miles on it, I don't think so, calling someone a dick on the internet makes you the keyboard warrior, I didn't call you anything, sorry rock I thought it was a good post but it belongs in the dumbgeon now

Hower meters are great for maintaining your bike if you use the correct approach. You need to do base line measurements on parts to know how things are wearing based on time. If you do not know how your riding style effects the parts you will either be wasting money or pushing the envelope on disaster.

Anybody with acceptable mechanical skills should be able to look over a bike, maybe take it for a short easy ride without bouncing it off the rev limiter, and get a pretty clear picture of how a bike was treated and how much it has been ridden. And I don't mean if the tires are new and the plastic is shiny.....

I've also noticed over the years in talking to people about their bikes, the ones that are more than happy to tell you how much they've won and how fast they are for their "sponsors" have probably not ridden their bikes too hard. But the ones that don't say much at all other than, Its a dirt bike, Its been ridden, and there's no warranty......along with not liking to talk about themselves are the ones to pay attention to. I have yet to really come across a real hammerhead fast guy that will toot their own horn. (I know a lot of them) They don't seem to care if you think they're fast or not, mostly because they are not worried at all about you beating them. .

The fast pricks around here will do nothing but tell you how easy the expert class is and that they're not that good so you enter their class and then they take your money.....Stay away from those bikes....ha ha

RMZ's come with one...the dealer (or you if you buy the scanner) will scan it and give you a print out of 10 various readings...and one of them is engine run time to the minute.

Let go grieby,I take my hour meter off when I sell my bike, I tell people the truth, my bike was raced every week and maintained perfectly if the buyer doesn't believe me they don't have to buy it, no one has ever walked away from purchasing one of my used race bikes, if your mint condition 450 had over 200 hours on it i wouldn't offer you more then 2500 for it, so I answered your question don't you have a graphics kit to install or a James Stewart thread to post in? Let it go now

Yamaha's do have a built in hour meter. It's just not mounted on the outside of the bike. I plug in my GYTR tuner and the hours are right there tracked in the ECU.
