Halfway Through the West Series and . . .

Edited Date/Time 2/3/2016 9:23am
Halfway through the West series and I can almost remember the numbers of half of the riders currently in the top ten in points!

Being that I'm more than a casual fan (I always watch), I think it's great for the sport that I have to wait for the scroller to know who is who when they are shown on the broadcast. I mean, the current scheme sure beats the crap out of the alternative -- who in the hell could possibly wrap their heads around why #338 was battling with #37??

Good work, guys!

Good work, guys!

I literally had to explain about twenty times who was who to everyone else in our box last weekend, it's a fricken joke. I watch all the races and still have damn near no clue who is who just based on numbers. I was also asked why the numbers changed every year, and I couldn't give them an answer. .

Sorry, didn't mean to quote the OP.

Id much rather see
Order of the previous years finish
It would be much easier for everyone to understand that
#338 is a rookie and is leading #1 through 5#
Around etc..or or #19
Has been on the podium the last 3 races
And is having a much improved year ...

No one in the industry cares because we all know who is who based on style and team.

Craig and smith being 38 and 39 on the same team nearly same height and style is pretty fucking annoying though

I actually can tell them a part immediately from each other. Christian is the epitome of smooth and stands up straight on the bike. Jordon is much more hunched over and erratic on the bike...

Guess I'm one of the guys who studies the new numbers every year when they come out.

No problem here.

I do the exact same thing. It usually takes me a couple races to get most of all of them remembered. A lot of times I can blow the minds of some of my friends when I tell them who was riding what bike and number from back in 81'. I can't remember them all , but remember quite a few.

I like it. Always cool to see pros riding with "your" number. Became a fan of Baggett because he got #57 in 2011, the year after that he won the outdoor title. Laughing Can't say I'm a fan of Hansen though, lol.

This.

Loved it in the 80s and early 90s when everyone in gps just had the number based on last year's finish position.

Not a fan of pick your own number. I can see where the casual fan will remember Stewarts number or Cairoli's number, so basically remembering the big stars, but i don't believe for a second that a casual fan will know what Aaron's Plessiners or Bisceglias number will be.

With numbers based on last year the casual fan at least immediately will realise that #6 Plessinger or #8 Bisceglia are guys to follow, whereas #38 Brandon Scharer probably isn't that good.

I am curious to see how Martin is going to do. He's had some pretty dismal SX seasons but his MX season was absolutely impressive.

Yep, the number stuff sucks... Just let them choose a number and let them run it every year... this stuff is confusing.

But then what if 10 guys want the same number?

Why not just follow the guys at the front regardless of number?

Just like in local series, he who signs up for the number first gets to keep that number as long as they keep racing. Im all for letting them choose there own numbers and keeping them year after year. It makes much more sense and is much easier to market yourself. Hansen is proof of that. He is known as 100. Why should he not be able to keep that number and sell his 100 stuff year after year.

I think single digits should be kept for career numbers or title winners, but the rest, let them keep em.
