I did my own free supercross tours when it was here in Utah. I'd walk in Friday afternoon and go wherever I wanted to. My service uniform and a clip board. I did it twice. Just walk through the gate and make sure I had the clip board. I never stole anything, but could have.

Twice. Never stopped or questioned by anyone. The only person who ever talked to me was Roger Decoster. I could see he was looking for my badge, as we talked, but he never said anything about my not having one.

Once an event gets so large, I think its difficult, if not impossible to try and predict the actions of an individual.

"possibly I was just a step ahead of them."

Mike, man, you and Brandon Biro and Jack Rice and all of the VTMXers and social posse, you were MANY steps ahead of them! This was a really cool story and we all love happy endings. I think in this case it was so brazen a steal, and happened so quickly, and at the busiest round for everyone, it barely had time to register for the event officials, but you and your friends and fans and fellow enthusiasts did some very cool work here. I say it all the time: the world is a much smaller place with social media and it's easier to get help and support with your phone than ever in our history...

I do hope that they do something with you and the whole episode on this week's TV show (and certainly SupercrossLIVE!)

And congrats, what an adventure. Now go make the Oakland main!

I woundnt be as concerned with bikes leaving the event with fake creditials as I am about stuff coming into an event with fake creditials.
With the terroir attacks in the world now. They would love to drive a van into a stadium event with 50k people.
Field need to get its shit strait , for the safety of our riders and fans.
If this happend in the nfl , baseball or nascar
The FBI would be all over it

I don't know the whole story here yet (missed last weekend's race) but I think you guys are all being a little hard on Feld/AMA here for a "lone wolf" theft at a very crowded and busy event. I am glad that Michael got his bike back. Todd Jendro wasn't even at the event, he was on the other side of the country, and we spoke about this and what happened and what could be done on Sunday night. Most of the AMA event crew was traveling home on Sunday or not even at the event -- they were at their amateur awards banquet in Columbus--and most of the people at Feld involved in Event Ops have to get the place packed up, the dirt out, etc. They also combed the entire stadium and lowers of the stadium (used for storage) to see if the guy hid it somewhere to get later. I am not sure what they could have done other than get security videos and contact the police. They did find the stadium security to access the video of the guy riding the bike out of the tunnel, and the rest of it was a mix of luck, hard work by Michael and the others, and ultimately they grabbed the guy.

This same thing happened at Unadilla four years ago and Ben Lamay's bike and Willy Browning's bikes were stolen out of the pits the night before the race. No security or police saw anyone leave the pits with a motorcycle, but what had happened instead was that someone who came with another rider and had a mechanic's pass went and found to bikes to steal, loaded them up in his van (which was inside the pits) and then waited until morning to leave. We had no idea and were baffled by the disappearance, and ended up going down a lot of wrong paths looking the bikes. Just like what happened in Oakland, social media kicked in, someone spotted two race bikes in someone's garage over in Connecticut, and we got the bikes back through a top from a Racer X reader.

I am not sure what Feld or the AMA (or any promoter) can do when someone shows up at a massive event with a brazen plan and then (almost) pulls it off. I spoke on the phone with Todd Jendro as well as Jeff Canfield about the whole saga and they both were going through credentialing trying to figure out how this happened and who it might be, while also trying to manage the load out of the event, only to find out it was a forged pass and the man had apparently scoped this all out two weeks ago.

And this happens everywhere. I have got a guy who tried to steal a Cobra at Loretta's, and we didn't catch the POS thieves who took five bikes that were left out at the Ironman GNCC last October, and one of them was Kailub Russell's ISDE bike. We never got them back, and we're still looking.

Reading all of these barbs thrown their way, what you might see as a result is an event stricter credentialing process, less access to the pits and tunnel, more security checks at entrance and access points, and just a longer time to get anywhere at the races. Michael got extremely lucky that Brandon Biro spotted the bike going down the highway and noticed something odd. Had it not happened, I pretty sure Feld would have made sure Michael had a new bike to compete on this Saturday night in Oakland. No matter, I'm pretty sure more stringent security plans are being drawn up now, and the rest of us (both the scum bug thief going to jail) are going to pay a small price in our time and access so that this doesn't happen again, just like going through an airport...

Ultimately, bikes are expensive, thieves are desperate, and it will almost certainly happen again, only some other sneaky way, and we will all be looking again, trying to help. Thank goodness for social media and a close moto family that always wants to help others when it's their turn for a bad deal like this.

Hey DC, I can only imagine if you caught someone stealing a bike (at nationals or supercross) you would personally kick their ass haha.

Always appreciate your insight into things and glad these guys are able to recover their bikes.

I'll never understand how thieves are so stupid. I love that they just hide the bikes in plain sight with all the graphics on them.

"I woundnt be as concerned with bikes leaving the event with fake creditials as I am about stuff coming into an event with fake credentials."

The Anaheim 1 I went to had metal detectors at every gate and I had to empty my coat and pockets every time through. That's what we lose a little more of with every terror attack: the chance to move about freely.

And tprice07, I am sure that thought goes through everyone's mind every time, though when we caught the dad stealing the Cobra at LL, we let Pepe the Sheriff handle the arrest and all...

It's just shocking that guys r on here saying they get in and move around without creditials in fake uniforms and clipboards . What else could someone have access too?

It sucks the loss of r freedoms but things have changed . When have to change with them

Such an awesome story, reminds me of the time my parents place got robbed.

Couple sleds went missing in the night and our customers spent all weekend looking for them, literally hundreds of snowmobilers looking for these sleds, they found them. The thieves were found by police after an anonymous tip laid out on the ground and very sore with the tethers taken off the sleds. The tethers mysteriously reappeared at our doorstep a couple days later. Whoever found the thieves didn't let them off easy lol. We got the sleds back and the good Samaritans never got caught.

For everyone saying the AMA or Feld doesn't care in my experience with them that is very far from the truth.
Yup. Be careful what you wish for. Many times the cure is worse than the disease.

It sucks that they don't have an active arrest/booking roster.
Or it would be easy to find who he was.
All they have is a name search. http://www.vcsd.org/pr-inmate-information.php

I'm still curious to find out who the guy is.

I think it is safer than it was 10 years ago. Landed in LAX yesterday. Headed down stairs to get my luggage. You go through a door that says No Re-Entry. Two woman working for American Airlines watching the door. They were so busy talking to one another, I could of snuck right past them. Once past them you can walk right up to where you board the plane. You would think TSA would be watching that door?

haha You're doing the same thing I am. Is that where you think the bike was located? I concluded he was arrested on Darlene Lane in Moorpark. Still can't find a way to see his mugshot.

Google Earth - get the addy of property that looks similar then look up who owns the property at the county appraisers site.
Then check the name through the jail site.
Confirm with arrest date 1-24-2016.

Is that what you are trying?
I tried it earlier - didnt figure it out...no luck.
But keep trying if so.

I don't have the address where the bike was located, just what I believe to be where he was arrested. The photo shows a Moorpark police car, and there were 4 arrests in Moorpark on 1/24/16, one of which is described as follows:

01/24/2016 - (ID# 160011836) Arrest Adult VC 10851(a) Felony Unlawful Driving Or Taking Of A Vehicle

01/24/2016 - (ID# 160011836) Arrest Adult PC 496(a) Felony Receiving Stolen Property Over $950 (Prop 47)

Going to Google Earth hvaughn's road and see if it looks similar to the pics.

I'd assume that's gotta be his charges.

I think you're right. The house on Darlene has a couple white trucks in the aerial, what looks like a blue shipping container, overhead powerlines, and an additional dirt road access to the north
