I have lived all over the USA and so far it seems to me that the best vet racing is on the West Coast. This is only my opinion but I would like to hear input from other vet racers around the country. The reason I say the West is the best is that here we have the Over the Hill Gang and Old Timers MX groups. I have not seen those types of Vet racing groups on the east coast? Anything like that in the east?

It may have to do with the AMA and how they seem to have a monopoly on mx racing back east. The OTHG and the OTMX are lucky enough to self govern (membership run) and control their own destiny without the AMA getting in the way.

For that matter the South chapter of the OTHG has been self promoting most of their own races for almost 20 years.

An example:

NESC has great turnout in the Vet classes.

It's East Coast and non-AMA...

Don't forget REM at Glen Helen...40+ races a year. REM can be considered a "Vet" club with some fast ass 50+ year olds!....Then of course we have the Vet World Championships here on the west coast sooooo yes I'd have to agree with you.

They stopped the OTHG mammoth race a few years back. OTHG actually had their own race up there the week before the Mammoth "national" My dad raced it many many times. I enjoyed going to watch way more back then than I do now.

OW38B brings up a valid point as to why maybe the west coast has more vet racing clubs than the east coast. I always wondered if it was just a matter of people on the west coast get out more and do more outdoor activities? Maybe larger families on the east coast thus the fathers don't ride as much? Could be many reasons I guess.

Fine for the west coast, but we have Millville here in the Central US, within five hours of my home.

They have a fantastic program with around ten event weekends per season*:
45 A & B
50 A & B
55 A & B
60+
and I expect a 65+ to be added in the near future... ;-)

*event weekends usually have a day of organized practice followed by a day of racing.

I went to my first Old Timers race at Washougal last summer and it was pretty cool. They had a bunch of 70+ guys and even a couple 80+ guys. That is crazy right? Cool to see those guys out there riding though! Big props to them.

Other than Mammoth, it would be hard to find as many 30+ racers as they get at REM at least on the West coast. The combo of a technical but not jumpy track and a lot of seat time for your buck is hard to beat.

I would like to drive south sometime this winter and race the REM. I have heard good things about it. I enjoy Glen Helen also.

That Red Bud vet fest sounds like a good place to hit. Still it seems odd that the West Coast is the place with all of the long term vet clubs! Pretty cool scene out west I guess. Hope it catches on nationwide sometime.

It was/is the weekend before the regular Mammoth weekend, the Mammoth people (Mike Colbert, et al) put the Mammoth Vet weekend on now. We did not want to stop putting it on, but Mammoth saw the 400 plus riders we were getting and took it over for themselves. It was an expensive race to put on............but worth it.

I have raced REM many times and they put on a good race, but I think the OP was referring to a California/west coast sort of thing.

We have a group in the southeast, SEVMX, which is focused on vintage bikes but does get a decent attendance for modern bikes.

I think the success of the Old Timers (my dad was one in the 80's) and OTHG in So Cal is the ability to hold day races at a variety of tracks. In the south, although we do have a number of tracks, they can be anywhere from 1 hr to 6 hrs away. Making for a whole weekend commitment. 2 race days and camping out is usually the norm.

In the Michigan / Ohio / Indiana area I don't know of Vet Clubs but we do have a a lot of Vet racers . The Vet Fest at Red Bud wil get over 500 - 600 plus racers , they run all classes from 25+ to 70+ A-B and C racers , most classes have a Full gate at a National Track ........it is a good time ! I race with Masters. It's a great series! Usually about 8-9 races per season with entries ranging from 250-350 per event. It's a well run organization and the racing is always a blast. Last year the races were held at buddscreek, speed citi, tomahawk and happy ramblers. Non-AMA

I've been racing the Masters series since 2012 and agree with everything you said. Plus, they run some of the longest motos I've experienced since I first started racing back in the 1970s. 8 laps for the A classes.

I don't get the AMA strangle hold back east and the midwest. What is the benefit to weekend warriors? Some legendary races happen here in California without having to pay extra money to do it. The old Golden State Nationals was a national tune up for many top pros back in the day. That was a CMC run event. Lots of really good regional series too, and as mentioned, 2 stroke nationals, vet world etc.

OTHG in Northern California probably has the largest turnout. Many different classes and there are often 30 riders on the line for some classes.
The Bay and Sierra chapter race together every other weekend and there are 5 Nationals a year that make up the national series.

There are enough tracks around that you hardly hit the same track twice in a year. It's like a whole circuit. Every other weekend you are racing at a different track .

Sierra national this year... the 45 novice class.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr2NN_n8Uik

The south national at Glen Helen in 14'. Don't really get a good idea of how many riders are on the line cause this guy gets a good start.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5iy6-vFvDM

There is Beginner ,Novice ,Intermediate ,Expert and Master for each age group///30-38, 38-45, 45-52, 52 -58 .... tons of classes with many riders in each class.

Hard for me to believe anyone has it better than Nor-Cal for Vet racing right now. Bigger turnouts than the kids groups bring to any track here.

They have begun a vet only series here in Texas. Pity is that it is based around Dallas. Nothing for Central Texas.

Texas around the Houston area is some good Vet racing. Heck I had a great time at Rio Bravo yesterday and last night with my old friends.

I raced a couple rounds with them this year, was a blast! They race on Saturday instead of Sunday. 2 rounds of morning practice instead of one (more track time). Still wrapped up the day around 3-4pm! The series finale is next weekend dec 5th at freestone mx. I won't be able to make it but I can't wait for next year!

Copy paste from the website:

The Moto Masters Suzuki Cup Series is designed for Veteran motocross riders a place to call home. With classes beginning with Vet 25+ C/D, every rider will feel right at home with fellow competitors. The tracks involved are committed to offering the Vets of our industry an environment without having to wait all day for one class. In turn, the hope is that Vets will patronize these venues. Each round will race on Saturday, allowing everyone the ability to enjoy their Sunday’s however they chose.

As an incentive for riders on Suzuki’s, the OEM has decided to support the Moto Masters with factory contingency offers at all six rounds. Any brand can race the series however if you ride an “RMZ”, you have an even greater reason to dust off those boots. Hit the “contingency” page on www.TexasMX.com for more info from Suzuki.
