And the US does have an advantage for MXDN due to the size of our population but it is countered by the the fact most MXDN races are held on GP tracks in Europe in GP format a week after the GP series, and GP riders only race MX. For US riders it is unfamiliar tracks, unfamiliar format, unfamiliar racers, etc... over a month after their series. It also means our riders get a shorter offseason, and some of our top riders are not doing it because of that. And today you saw how much of a difference knowing the tracks makes. So it's not like the GP riders don't have an advantage most MXDNs too.

However, as true as that is; it is still a more desirable alternative than having the total lack of options the smaller countries face every year - not just some years - but every year. Italy usually consists of one really good rider (Cairoli) and that's it... in other words no matter what AC does they need a miracle to win. Some countries can produce various combinations of good and fairly decent riders but are mostly hamstrung by at least one poor performer. Very few can field 3 factory superstars. And even for the few (really, France and Belgium) where that's sometimes possible; they are still hugely reliant on no one getting injured.
Pit Row
I fully agree on the first post. Villo at Budds Creek was a good example, as much as the average performance of ama top guns like Dungey or Baggett at the MXdN was showing much less domination. That can lead to this type of analysis, although each rider may outperform or underperform some week ends depending on the starts, track style & conditions:
"a top 5-8 ama guy on his home soil can run with the mxgp leaders, and vice versa".
I would like to add it in little at the bottom of my posts, to advertise the no drama theory
How is it possible to do that ?

Riders like Dungey and Cairoli are a ton above on this topic. They know how to accept to lose a position if it gets sketchy or if they do not need it, and that is why they are 90 to 99% of the time healthy and scoring big points. That is how many riders could not beat them, RV, Reed, Canard, Desalle, Nagl, Frossard, Paulin, etc.
I know there is not better training than racing at 100% but that race craft is an asset when you want to win championships multiple times. That is the goal of both so I hope their teams will teach them to make a long & successful career.
