I'd like to see him put in a good performance at the usgp as an audition for a ride in Europe. He should be making money in Europe this winter also, hitting as many sx's as he can.
He turned pro in 2004.
At one point in the film Kosar, who was obviously emotional throughout his interview, said he knew almost from the beginning that his father was siphoning money. While the elder Kosar had used some of Bernie's money to pay for things like mortgages and car payments, it later came out that he also had a side deal with the Cleveland Browns worth $1 million.
Nonetheless, he continued allowing his father to manage his finances. According to Bernie, the overarching reason for that decision was that he hoped beyond hope that the money could repair his childhood memories and the relationship with his father.
That yearning for a bond between family members does not exist just within athletes but is a worldwide psychological phenomenon. There are very few people reading this who would not do everything and anything to help out family members, particularly parents.
Once I heard about 22 closing its doors, I thought it'd be a done deal now. If I had to guess, he'll still put his feelers out for a decent paying/ good bike motocross deal, if he can't find anything to his liking or worth his effort, he may head to 4 wheels.
Guys like Josh were signing huge $800k+ contracts right out of Loretta's, and with no pro experience.
I think it is safe to say he probably made way more for a few years from 04/05/06/07 than he did during the 11/12/13/14 era.
But then all changed (and not just for Josh, but the entire sport) around 2008 or so, and as the bottom fell out of the larger economy and dirt bike sales fell by 80% over a five year period.
Guys like Tim Ferry and Ezra Lusk come to mind (but there are more) . They both really took advantage of the opportunity and had some pretty surprising results.
If Josh does have a ride with them for next year, I hope it works out well for both of them!

I dont know for sure what Josh was being paid (nor is it my business) but I do know that several of those rookies from class of 04/05/06 (himself included) made very good base salaries, nearly $1mm per year.
As for what he made post recession and post injuries (and post family issues), I have no idea, but assumed, and perhaps incorrectly, that it was less than the rookie days. If I am wrong, and Two-Two / JGR paid seven figures, well good! Josh is a good guy and it was terrible what he and his family have collectively been through. He did not deserve to lose his life savings after taking the risks of being a professional racer. I sincerely hope he did claw it all back and is in good shape for whenever he decides to hang up his leathers.
As for my comment on off road vehicle statistics, there was nothing wrong about that. Sales dropped by a mind boggling ~80% between 2008 to 2012. This had a nearly instant effect on OEM budgets for racing, and I guestimate that nearly 15-20 or more paid rides in MX/SX were lost in that 2008-2012 period.
