Dungey on GP tracks/Competition

I do find it funny though that he makes that remark about the GP competition the very year he decides to skip the nations. Let's be honest, Febvre would probably show him the fast way around that track this year.

Hahaha!!! I knew when I read that it would cause a troll eruption!
I agree with him on tracks, the prep has sucked at all the tracks except Argentina and have been the cause of many injuries this year. The National tracks as a whole have been way rougher (sans Lommel).
As far as comp... pretty even through the top 5 after that its hard to tell.
You can't use the space between riders as a comparison because with the shorter smoother GP tracks there is less to separate the men from the boys as there has been in the Nationals(unless you want to include the dust and poor watering).

The tracks being crappy I agree. Majority of them looked horrible. As far as the competition not being the same LOL! RV smoked his ass most the time and went over there and got his ass handed to him more than once. Really
surprised that came out of his mouth.

Do you really think that was the same RV we saw? Kawi has had some pretty big issues/struggles on both side of the pond with their 450 this year.

So we can all agree that Dunge – one of the smartest, hard working, level headed, and dedicated racers – knows nothing?!
Yup, all the GP cheerleader Vitards know way more than him.

Really, Racerx shouldn't even interview riders anymore...they should just post their questions here, and the Vitards will be able to answer the questions better and more truthfully than any rider ever could.

So if it's really hard pack it's not really racing....noted
I was thinking the same. I really don't agree with Dungey. I think the MX1 class is pretty fucking stacked. And just because the tracks aren't deep loam doesn't mean they're not considered race courses? Granted I'd always prefer the loam over the hardpack, but I find that assertion a little ridiculous.

From the track perspective I agree with Diesel. A lot of the GP tracks have great scenery, but the track prep leaves a lot to be desired. Herlings' mouth was watering when he watched the Ironman race because of the way the track was prepared. The US tracks truck in a lot of outside dirt to get the racing surface optimal, allowing them to disc deep and make it loamy. The GP tracks do not, and this means if they were to disc deep then they would be bringing up shit dirt and rocks. I called out DC on track prep this year to make it more "Euro rough," but my tune has changed. These guys are the top echelon of the sport and deserve the best racing surface. Just like the top PGA golf pros expect ideal conditions when they play various tournaments around the world.

From a competition standpoint, I think he is way off. The GP riders are just as fast as the AMA riders. The difference in track conditions plays towards one or another, but if everything were equal for an entire series (not taking into account of acclimation for riders traveling to different countries or track conditions), then it would be a smorgasbord of riders from both series in the top 20.

Does the whole "no off season races because it effects my prep for Anaheim 1" go out the window when you sign up for your sponsors straight line race and a competing brand's big money race... ? I feel like it does.

And I feel like RJ, Wardy, O'Show and Hannah might think that is bullshit.

Didn't read through the thread because it's probably all the sack of shit responses as always in these type of threads. But I do agree that the tracks in MXGP have gotten worse over the years. Great to change things up but if a track doesn't work out ditch it and move on to a track that can deliver. Mantova looked really good though. Rough track with some sweet jumps. Best of both worlds. So did Ironman, one of the best tracks I've ever seen (on TV).

When Villo was running I was enthusiastically watching, but after he got hurt I kind of lost some interest, in part because a couple of the first tracks did look kind of crappy. I has since caught a few of the more recent GP's and I have to say, I'm digging the tracks. Once I even thought, if RV could have held out until some of these later rounds, he could have done some winning.

Surprised to hear him make those comments too, doesn't sound like him at all, putting down the GPs just after pulling out and claiming the AMA is tougher-after he just won...

The tracks vary vastly in the GPs and seem rougher, recently he's ridden: Lommel-bottomless sand,Teuchenthal-hardpack,choppy,knarly and Kegums-sand but with a base, more loamy

All the US riders said those places were the roughest they'd ridden all year,Dungey didn't fare so we'll as previousy years,I think Villopoto came up against that too,as well as a gaggle of riders who are Damn fast in their own series too,

The AMA tracks seem more consistently prepared and maybe nicer to ride,Herlings commented on the last round calling it "prime".It's also what the AMA guys are used to and are incredibly fast on them

If they would've ran the old schedule starting in Valkenswaard in April and going on through Europe Villopoto would've been a serious title contender. That's what I believe at least. And to me it makes more sense to start off the series on a sandy track in Europe. That's where everyone has their base and been riding for the winter.

I believe that every year the AMA series starts with more competition, the problem is after Supercross top top guys are out so when Motocross starts some top guys are missing. A problem that the GP riders don't have(no SX), which some times leads to the GPs having more competition just like they did at the start of this year. But alas it wasn't meant to be as the top four guys all got injured which IMO in this year lead to the AMA series having tougher competition this year.

As far as the tracks I suppose there is some truth in there and some BS.

More like Red Bull was pissed off for him not doing it last year. The monster energy cup is also a place to see where your settings are at. Off season races to Aldon are a waste of time even with the start money they offer the top Americans, it doesn't fit their training schedule so he says no. MxDN is an expection of course.

If the competition is tougher in the U.S. than in the GPs then why has Dungey only gone 2-11, 6-7 and 7-9 in the last three MXdNs?

Dungey is a championship racer and MXdN's never really favored his approach.

It's a shame though, dude has really stepped up his game this year as far as a "per race" approach. Would have been interesting to see what he could have done this year.

You guys do realize that Dungey won three MXoN titles right? Seems his "approach" is ok.

Reason I like to watch both series is because the tracks are so different. If I had a choice which to ride its hands down the chocolate browny mix of Red Bud, Millville, Indiana, etc. Unfortunately I only ride hard pack rocky dusty burned out blue groove. To me the top Pro's have earned the privilege to race better tracks than us mere mortals.

Loket all day. I've loved the vibe of that track since I first saw it. I'm sure many will disagree.

No it isn't the truth about the tracks.....it is your opinion. BTW don't you and your buds ever get tired of these US is better threads? Great tracks on both sides of the pond and discussion about which is better is pointless IMHO

i know you are Canada not the US. Hope the leg is getting better.

You know what's funny?

When I go through a thread like this , I can read the comments and replies and KNOW EXACTLY which side of the pond a person is from , before I even look at their location.

Or something completely preposterous / retarded , I'll know who wrote it even before looking at the avatar.

Take that for what it's worth.

Beyond Dunge possibly eluding to the track prep in the GP's not being the best, that's where any agreement from me with that statement ends. Just like I don't know how anyone could logically say the GP riders are faster/are tougher competition right now, I don't know how anyone can logically say the AMA riders are faster/are tougher competition right now. GP riders have bridged that gap for a while now, and the series are too different to compare apples to apples. Too many variables, plus transition times for riders to even be able to ride at their full potential.

Had Dungey raced at least two full seasons in the GP's, his opinion in this might hold some actual weight.
