1996 CR250 McGrath Replica Rebuild

I had my radiators re-cored at an aluminium fabricator, around $150 for both, also just saw that Motosport.com is doing Myler's radiators for $150 up.
Maybe worth checking out?

Hey col,

When you painted your radiators did you paint over the fins, or mask them off and just paint the tank and body? My radiators aren't bad either, l/h is a little worse than right. I've cleaned and blasted the tanks and can't get the light shade of brown out of the fins.

I'm guessing a really light coat of silver might help?

Cheers Jim
Hey Jim

When I painted my radiators I painted everything, fins included. Except the cap! I painted it black as per MC's bike.

I've heard good and bad reports about fitment on different models Yamaha's and ktms, but no one with a 96 CR250?

Any preference for Winner or GPI brand?

I priced getting mine re-cored in Australia and it was $380 per side, too rich for me.
$380 per side....OUCH!

I have purchased a set of GPI's for my 95 project but haven't got the frame back yet to check fitment. From the above posts, it doesn't look promising...

The GPI's hold up well Col. I put a set on my 450 after folding the right side Rad back against the frame last year. Decided to buy and try them while getting the bent one straight and welded, and decided to leave them on. Fitting was good, and they are holding up great.

question for the pro's here, Im currently looking for used seats to use as a base for a new seat cover (and foam if necessary). Since the supply of the 92-96 seats are in short supply, I was curious if the 97-99 CR250 seat will fit on the 92-96 CR250? Was the aluminum frame and smaller airbox so drastic that the seats didnt change over? I was thinking of using a 97 CR250 original seat to match the black airbox (similar to the team graphics from 96) just for riding on, and making the exact replica seat out of a different seat all together for show purposes.

has any one had any luck with these?

I have finished my build. Nowhere near a true replica but I'm very happy with my finished race bike. I couldn't find a NOS tank so I got an alloy one built.

Great job mate, looks sweet.

Where did you get the tank made? If you don't mind me asking what sort of money for one?

Are the ohlins forks the same diameter as Showas? What triples did you use and how'd you get them to work?

Cheers Jim

Hi Jim,

I got the tank made in the UK and it cost me 500 pounds.

The Ohlins forks fit straight in to 97 to 07 CR triple clamps so I used SCAR brand triple clamps from France

Thanx mate

Cool, how did you get the stem, steering stops, head set bearings etc. to work with the 96 frame tube?

I'm assuming you had to make some modifications?

What ever you did, it should work with a set of 47mm Showa's?

I used the stock Honda stem and stock head stem beatings. I machined up some alloy sleeves to fit the stock stem to the SCAR clamps and fitted some shoulder bolts in the bottom clamp for steering stops. Pretty easy to fit up. Yes the 47mm Showa's will bolt straight in these clamps.

Thanks mate, when you get a chance could you take a photo of your steering stop mod.

Thanks mate, nice work. Pretty simple mod to make off the shelf triples work, thanks for being a pioneer.

I extended the frame stop on my 125 to work with a whole '08 CRF front end and clamps.
All balls conversion bearings made the swap easy.

Yeah Harv, just get them to mask the machined faces x 2 on rear hub and x 1 on front hub. I've just had a set done for my '95.
I also went to collect my plating this week, and when I got there my bolts had been mixed up with another customers' stuff, which he had taken home with him, I lost my cool. Told them to call him immediately and get the stuff back, my heart sank when they were asking for "slang's" number, which is Afrikaans for snake. hahaha I thought what are my chances of getting the stuff back from a guy with a name like that. anyways all sorted now!

I also had my frame and spring powdered, last time on the '96 I has those bits, and hubs sprayed.

Although your wheel looks rough, sometimes that thick layer of gunk is the best protection, you might be pleasantly surprised after the blasting and plating is done.

Just a quick one, after a LONG wait I've finally got notice that the CR 250 1992-1996 Pro Circuit works finish pipes and silencers with the old school stinger I've commissioned them to re make will finally be here in about 3 weeks, the silencers are on route as we speak and the pipes a few weeks away.
I will have the 92/94 and the 95/96 options of front pipe, the silencers are all the same.
We're charging £300 for the pipe/ silencer combo.
Please email martin@ docwob.co.uk to pre order and we can ship as soon as they land

I've just mailed you Doc, I'm in for one combo please, and may even take a second combo - both '95/'96 CR250.

Many thanks Justin

I've read through this entire post twice now. I'm impressed with the quality of work and attention to detail I've seen on your builds! Very nice! There is a lot of useful information here. It all makes it pretty easy for just about anyone with motivation and a love for motocross to build a replica. I started a 96 McGrath replica years ago (about 8 years actually, haha) using my "like new" 93 CR 250. I've been able to track down most of the parts I need through countless hours of research and searching on the internet. Had I known this was here it would've made life a lot easier! Although it would have taken away a lot of the challenge, which makes it that much more fun. It has been, and will continue to be, a very slow process for me because it's very little here, very little there. Sorry for rambling on...onto the point. There is one part I can't seem to figure out. Jeremy's front brake master cylinder is one like I've never seen...it doesn't appear to have the typical banjo bolt. Does anybody have any idea where this would've come from or how/where to get one like it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, guys! Keep up the good work!

It's a works master cylinder. You could replicate it with the m/c from early front-disk CRs, they used an identical line mounting system and look very much like the HRC/Nissen works units.

Thanks! I figured it out shortly after posting. The 90-91 set up is very similar. The problem now is finding one worth buying!

I was just going through my bike figuring out what parts I still need to find. Something I hadn't noticed the 10,000 times I've looked over pictures before is that the rear rotor on McGrath's bike has a 6-bolt pattern. From what I've been able to find in the little research I've done on this particular part so far, Honda has always ran a 4-bolt pattern. Any ideas/suggestions?

Factory Honda hub and disc.
The 87/88's had a 6-bolt setup.

The Factory Honda ones had an evenly spaced bolt pattern. The 87-88 has a pattern more like the front rotor. It'd be nice to get everything exact, but some things just might have to be compromised. I don't have near as much money or as many resources as they did.

Hey guys. There's a link in here somewhere for special Honda parts...if I remember right it's in one of the exhaust discussions. Anyway, I found a couple parts there that I'm interested in, but all that will come up for me is the pictures and description. I can't find anywhere to contact the seller or to purchase. It seems to still be a working site...maybe just not in the US? The site is
www.mastercross.net
Or if someone here is/knows who is selling the HRC 250 exhaust (new) I'd definitely be interested if it's for the right year. (Doesn't have a year listed.)

Mastercross is run by Claudio and his secretary Tiziana from Italy. They are good honest people and know what they are talking about. If you e-mail Tiziana she will give you a shipping cost. They understand English well. He has lots of factory and NOS OEM parts. I have had lots of stuff from them. You can buy with confidence.
