Psychologically speaking he held on to his amateur number, holding on to the successes of that time and it is possible holding that number instead of moving up to a number earned in the Pro's held him back. I am speaking mentally of course, he did great as an amateur but it well past time to bring in the mentality of the pro, full bore, that includes a new number.
Glad to see he did it, now the question is what number will he have racing AMA?

Edit: Didn't realize EK298 already explained this, lol.
That said, MENTALLY, there is something to say about keeping an amateur number instead of starting anew. With the drama that has surrounded them, it could have been a good thing to start fresh in AMA with a new number, mentally get to a new place with the past behind him.
The idea makes perfect sense, on the other hand pourcel seems to do alright with 377
Mike needs to get in shape/racing form before he breaks out #800 again. Hope he fixes the issues and comes back swinging.. He's the fastest rider to have ever raced the the Canadian Nationals by far(However, a bit unlucky).
