We parked at a rest stop on the way to the Daytona sx one year and when I woke up there was semis park in both sides and we threw up all day and missed Daytona. We were lucky we woke up at all.

I often sleep in my cargo trailer at the track and every time I do, I plug in my little portable Co2 alarm. They don't call it the silent killer for no reason. Take precaution. Prayers to these folks for a full recovery.

Update:

At 0930hrs on Thursday 28 May, three hospitality staff from Team HRC, the factory Honda team competing in the MXGP Motocross World Championship, were found to have suffered Carbon Monoxide poisoning whilst sleeping in the team’s hospitality truck, as they always do when travelling to and from races.
They were subsequently airlifted to different hospitals in Geneva, Lyon and Strasbourg, to provide the best accessibility for each to hyperbaric chambers for oxygen treatment.
As of midday Friday 29 May, all three are continuing to receive oxygen treatment and are under constant medical observation. At this point, no prognosis can be reliably given by medical staff so more time is needed before their situations can be assessed. Owing to the subjective nature of Carbon Monoxide poisoning, this timeframe also cannot be specified at present.
An investigation is ongoing into the source of the Carbon Monoxide, and the authorities are in possession of the hospitality truck to conduct further tests and assessments and continue their investigation more thoroughly.
Team HRC will provide updates as and when available. The team will continue with its racing activities this weekend at the MXGP of France.

Scary. Hope all three pull through. Seems like they are getting good medical care.

Yes, parking next to semis that are idling is not a good idea. All the newer trucks have special exhaust filters to reduce pollution and they have to go through a burn cycle every so often. The exhaust gases get very hot and it really smells bad. Most of the time the exhaust doesn't go up a stack on the side of the truck, but exhausts from under the truck. I hope these guys pull through ok.

Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that diesel engines produce very low amounts of carbon monoxide and conditions would have to be almost perfect for the levels to become fatal.

true but they do make lots of Nox and have other gases that are very harmful, carbon Monoxide poisoning is not the only thing at play.

The concern for diesel fumes is more of long term effects leading to cancer...I would suspect in this case some type of gas heater would be the cause of the carbon monoxide poisoning.

since we don't know their exact condition we can only speculate, they certainly could asphyxiate from diesel fumes but if they have the carbon monoxide poisoning I would guess it's a standby generator exhaust or maybe something they used for cooking too.

but lets wish them well and debate this somewhere else.

Received this email this morning from Roger Harvey, HRC Race Team Manager, Europe.

Morning Rob

Two of the guys regained consciousness yesterday evening, now waiting for the 3rd guy to hopefully follow suit.

Cheers

Roger

Encouraging news, thank god and please keep up your prayers for third guy to pull through!

Encouraging news, if 2 are not fighting for life anymore, in theory the 3rd one should be ok soon. Hoping for the best !

Will a carbon dioxide detector help detect carbon monoxide?

No, it is two different things. A CO2 sensor will not work with CO.

EDIT: anyway, i know from my job that a CO detector dont detect CO2, so would asume its not working the other way around eather.
