Tomac was on the PulpMX show tonight and they asked him about having to ride his two stroke during the week because his practice bike broke down. He said he rode his completely stock CR 250 with a pipe and silencer, completely stock suspension and motor, and it was only 4 seconds a lap slower than his factory 450 on his practice track.
Zach Osborne has been staying out there training and riding with him on the Husky 350 (he is riding the 350 instead of the 250 because of the power loss at elevation) Eli was running the same lap times as Zach on the Husky. In fact, it sounded like he was actually pushing Zach and trying to find a way around but he didn't really elaborate.
I think this answers some of the questions that come up regarding whether or not two strokes would be competitive with today's top riders. That scenario is almost comical.
I would hate to see what the lap times would look like if he was riding with works suspension on the two stoke and one of RC's old factory engines from 2003.

Listen to the Pulp archive if you want to hear Eli talk about it.

Practice on a 125 then race a 250!
Helped keep the parts bills down as well.
Times have changed, 4 strokes, especially 250cc or under were once called "Turtle Chasers"
Wake me up when the Honda 150 wins the Supermini title @ the ranch...
Even if it did happen, the rider(s) probably be Black Balled in some way. Can't see it helping KTM sell 250 thumpers...
"The marriage of KTM’s engineering prowess and its management’s willingness to invest dollars into R&D has not just resulted in the best 250cc two-stroke ever made, but two-stroke sales figures that stunned their Japanese competitors. It is reported that KTM sells more two-strokes dirt bikes than most other brands sell four-strokes. That is the kind of success a manufacturer deserves when it goes out on a limb to build bikes that its competitors have declared null and void."
I think you are a bit off on your post bud.
Pit Row
That would be like stating 125 two strokes were fine against 250effs because James Stewart won races on it. Whilst the rest of the field(world) languished.
It just validates what many have believed all along regarding the "technologically advanced" 4 strokes.
They are a joke.
And you are missing the point just because a factory rider is faster on a 4 stroke doesnt mean the average Joe Bloggs is faster....fact is the average Joe Bloggs rider is faster on a 4 stroke than a 2 stroke, they are easier to ride which is why the manufacturers produce them. Joe Blogg's buys the bikes not the factory riders.
He'd fucking fly on anything if he wanted too, the 10 year old bikes were pretty capable, assuming it wasn't clapped out, RC rode a bike just like that... Aussie guys rode ones even more similar, a pipe and revalved suspension, they went fast too.... Jerry Robin qualified for Lorettas on a 85... . MX is definitely more about the rider, especially outdoors.
4 strokes are definitely easier to ride faster though and the fact that he was faster at all probably means they're more capable too.
