Good point. Also Rick Johnson, he struggled terribly his last season, and his legacy is unaffected by it.

"Not at all"? I disagree. I beleive it gets tarnished just a tad. The preception of RV is that he was unbeatable, especially in the outdoors. Now with the way the GPs are going, that "immortal" status quickly disappeared! JMO
I may just be speaking for myself here, but I never had the perception that RV was unbeatable. Just that he was an extremely gifted rider, with massive determination to succeed. If you ever thought he was going to go and race GP's against some of the best riders in the world, on their home turf, and be unbeatable then you need to adjust the way you see things a bit. These guys he is racing against are unbelievably fast, and there is no shame in getting beat by them, just as there is no shame in them being beat by RV. Not winning this title does not effect his legacy at all.

As far as "GOAT" status is concerned, I had him ranked 3rd behind RC and SE, and if he can win the GP title, I would probably rank him 1st. If the GP season keeps going the way it is for him, I don't think I would put him in the top 5! I guess the saying is true! "you're only as good as your last race"!
He'll still be ranked higher than Stewart

Can't believe that anyone would de-rank Ryan because of a few mishaps. Fine, he has a few problems but he also has the balls to try the only thing he hasn't won. Racing in the US was a walk in the park for Ryan, give the man some respect.

Win or lose in the MXGP series it only adds to RVs legacy to me. He took a very interesting and extremely brave way to tip his hat and slip off into the sunset. I give him insane props for coming off the couch after so long without racing and taking on an all new series, with a new team, in many places he probably can't even pronounce.

So again, win or lose, RV is all-time badass and I thank him for blazing a new trail that I hope works as a 2 way street for future champs in each series and they cross the pond to try out the other. (I know very wishful thinking)

So let me get this straight, a rider wins 4 SX titles in a row, leaves behind his shot at a 5th straight (and the history books) to go race in a totally new series (one that already has a dominant figure, mind you) and you drop him out of your top 5 because he hasn't just waxed everyone over there? Wow, tough crowd.
Seems so *shakes head in disbelief*

Most of you seem to forget about Cairoli. He definitely is in the top 3 of the best racers in the last 15 years.

As far as RV, most guys i know (including myself) respect his decision and think it is pretty awesome that he came over to race the GP's, and wish him the best of luck. The few euro guys on the internet who dislike and bash on him just are the ones who get the most recognition, but they are not the majority Wink

I hope that RV quickly gets comfortable over here, wins some races and makes the already close championship battle even closer Smile

He set out to be a US SX and Motocross champion and he did that the best of his era, the only thing that changes(mine already has) is the US view of the GPs being slower. Put AC, Nagl, and DeSalle here and they'd have the same struggles.

I don't think it will affect his legacy at all, maybe for some Americans with unrealistic expectations. I know that myself and many others have even more respect for him now. Sure, he's not waxing guys who have been racing this championship for years, coming in a little unprepared doesn't help matters. But the fact that he's obviously giving 100% now and is right up there with the top guys and already has a win, in his first year here.. and probably last year racing, you guys should be proud of him for his effort.
Thank you!!

I was looking at last year, the last 14 races AC averaged 44 points per weekend. RV needs to gain a little under 3 1/2 points a weekend on each of the three. AC probably isn't going to average 44 points a weekend if everyone stays healthy but RV needs to be the one to beat starting in the next couple of races or it's over.

Isn't rcm one of the biggest js7 nut huggers? I forget, could be someone else. But if I'm right, this thread he made is not surprising

No it does not tarnish his legacy.

X2 .. the stupid level here sometimes is unbelievable. We're talking about a rider that has destroyed the competition here the last 8 years and his legacy might be tarnished if he doesnt win the title his first year in europe. Woohoo Woohoo Woohoo

Well, all the talk(pulp, racerx, transworld)before the GP season started was about if he doesn't win, it can maybe tarnish his legacy. I got a feeling if he was dominating everyone would be singing a different tune! But so what, it's only opinions anyways!

Win or lose, RV will still go down as one of the best IMO!
Bingo!!! The same goes for TC222.

Seems like the shit talking between fans is not as rapid too.

I see what you're doing. I'm a James Stewart fan boy myself first and formost just like yourself. No need to start a thread so you can degrade one of our sports best of all time.

PS: Stewart is still my favorite of all time. Personality wise, speed wise, creativity wise...You get the picture. Oh, and I can't wait to see him race a GP next year like he said he would!

Yep this right here. Win lose or draw the guy is giving it his best shot. I don't understand the RV slamming going on. Me personally.....i dig everything he's done so far in his career and what he's trying to accomplish now. Tarnish his legacy? Kind of a silly question.

Villopoto is racing a new series on a new team on tracks he has never seen against riders he only knows from racing them once or twice a year, why is anyone surprised its taking him time to adjust?

Roczen pretty much wiped the floor with his competitors before he left the GP's to come here, and it took him some time to adjust before he got to the top of his game again.

Why is Villopoto's situation any different?

Talent is talent, only a fool would think that riders from one side of the Atlantic are so much better than the other.
Roczen whiped the floor ?? did you see the races in MX2 that year ? Roczen had 651 points and Herlings 632 .... he left just in time , he wouldnt win another title

Of course his rep gets blemished if he gets smoked. A little. He will go from the guy that smoked the world on a 250F at Des Nations to getting beat straight up by the euros in GPs. It was a ballsy risk doing the GPs. The RISK being putting a blemish on a stellar career. You think that did McGrath any good getting beat that last year or two?...fooling around on KTMS. Not much of a blemish but yes, a little.
