*This isn't exactly moto related but involves somebody who used to ride. Move to non-moto if needed*

Hey guys, I'm sure most of you have heard about the half mile-wide EF4 (180-200mph wind) tornado that leveled the small town of Fairdale, Illinois on Thursday. As the crow flies, I live about two and a half miles from that town and I watched the tornado go by from my front porch, and all I can say is wow. Gnarliest thing I've ever witnesses. Anyhow, the town needs some help getting back on its feet. For those feeling generous, THIS GOFUNDME PAGE has been set up to assist in helping victims of this storm. Alpine Bank, the local bank in Kirkland (my hometown) is covering all GoFundMe fees so every penny of donations goes to the victims. Any help is hugely appreciated!!

The picture I got of the tornado:

The following is a story my dad heard from a friend's mother this morning. Read if you wish, it's pretty gnarly.

This morning while at the school getting ready to get bused to Fairdale to help with the cleanup, my dad ran into the mother of a kid I used to go to high school with (he rode at my house all the time when we were little and he's an awesome kid) and they live on Route 72 in Fairdale, though the house is roughly 200 feet from the road surface itself. When the tornado was approaching, the mother, the kid my age, and her younger son, who is 7 or 8 years old, were huddled up in the bathtub to take cover, since they don't have a basement. From what the mom said, she heard a loud noise, then saw the house starting to go away around them. The loud noise got even louder and the next thing she said she could remember was sitting on the ground looking at something yellow, which was odd because they didn't have any yellow flooring in their house. She and the youngest son had ended up on Route 72 in the middle of the road, and the older son was on the other side of 72 somewhere. Thankfully, none of them had serious injuries (none of them broke any bones), although the older son was extremely banged up. Some really gnarly stuff. I still can't believe I saw it so close, and for awhile the way it was coming towards us I thought we were done. It was headed right for my house from what I could see.

When I was 9 my parents house was leveled by a tornado. I was outside riding around my brothers bicycle which was later found in our neighbors backyard. My mom, brother, and I were all home and went in the basement. We were less than 10 feet from the basement stairs which were gone along with the entire floor. If not for the walk out we would have been stuck in the basement with debri completely piled up on the other side if the basement. I think we were lucky to make it. So was my dad who almost stepped on the live power wires when he came home in shock. Our riding mower was in our neighbors tree and my dad's f150 was about 3 ft tall on a railroad bank about 400 yards away. The engine and transmission were ripped out and landed on the bridge over the railroad tracks. All the mx bikes were within 20 or so feet of where the garage used to be. We lived across the street from a long running track. Our school house turned club house just down the road was leveled as well.

Hope everyone made it out ok. Were there any casualties? That's crazy that all three of them made it through after being carried away!!

I tried to drive through fairdale today on my way to iowa for a few days work.
72 was blocked off by police about 200 yards from the destruction and what I saw was amazing and something I never want to encounter.
Glad you are ok, that would be hard to watch and not run from.
You related to Ron D?

Yeah 72 is a mess and yes I am related to Ron, I'm his kid. Haha I heard they're trying to open up 72 soon but once they get it open it'll just become a parking lot/tourist attraction I think, which would slow down cleanup a lot...

I used to drive through Kirkland and Fairdale on my way to work at DeCal when I was there. Crazy to see and hear about the destruction. Thoughts and prayers go out to all those effected.

BDownen - Do you live at the house w the small track in the front/side yard property closer to DeCal than Kirkland??

last Friday morning, I got a text from a buddy, it turns out that on the way home from riding one of the tracks out west (Mt Carrol or Sunset) we had dinner at the restaurant that was shown on TV destroyed by the tornado.

I am up near Gurnee, and our sirens went off but the storm wasn't as bad by the time it reached us.

On the radio this morning, they were saying personal effects from the homes destroyed were found as far away as 100 miles, up in Kenosha!

Tragic indeed, best wishes to everyone up there.

Yikes. That's one of the things I think about while road-tripping in the summer. What would I do if I encountered a storm like that?

I don't live at that house, but I do know the people that live there. I live about a mile north of Kirkland on Pearl St (coming in from Decal Works turn right at Hines lumber and I'm about a mile up). We do have a track, though.

I was always told to find a ditch and get as low as possible. There's a video of a guy who gets caught in it in a truck and records it with an iPhone and he's in an underpass, which from what I understand is exactly what you don't want to do in that situation! Lol it's all just crazy how it happened. The relief fund is already up to $75,000+ in donations, which is awesome.

I really feel for everyone that is going through that. We've had our fair share of destruction from tornadoes in Arkansas and the damage never really seems to fully go away. You can still clearly see the path the tornadoes take, even years afterwards. Hopefully, the community pulls together and becomes even stronger as a result. Tornadoes are a bitch.

Gotcha, yeah I'm sure I've driven past your place as well taking the "back roads" back to Rockford.

I flew over Illinois on Thursday and when I got to the hotell and turned the TV on it showed just that. I was like what the? We had a really rough patch of turbulence over that area but I thought nothing about it at the time. I wish all of the people involved in this the best and that everything turns out for the best. Stay strong.

I ride at Byron, Mount Carroll, Ki Tracks, and Sunset Ridge most of the time, and usually like once a year I'll make the trip to Redbud for a practice. They're all within an hour and a half of me, besides Redbud being 3 hours or so.
