Those were the glory days of mini racing.

It was the brainchild of Rondo Talbot, aka Mr Know it all. He always had a tremendous affinity for mini riders.

Do you know what is significant about those photos in Cycle news?
Denis (NMA Champ) on here would know.

I had a chance to talk with him a few years back. What a humble, cool dude. He had some pretty funny stories of the old Daisy/Hi-Torque days.

Good eye.
That must have been the mod class or 105 class.

That bike was a full on cheater bike even in 1983.
It was so much faster than everything else.

Cool pictures!

Paul Denis was the king back then. What happened with his story? Is he just a regular guy now? I wonder if he still rides and just rips or over it all?

I have the Mini Cycle mag with the Kelvin Franks (RIP Kelvin) Roo-Link where they put an XR Honda 4-stroke in a RM80 chassis.....lots of technology/big thinking back then.

Good question...I have some older minibike mags that had a story on Jon Jon Belilsle who was a factory Italjet rider (from Texas??) that won everything and retired by age 9/10 or something like that?

Denis is on here now and again. NMA Champ is his handle. Posts in the Old school section.

Lots from that era just were over it and moved on. Girls, Partying, other interests. Some didn't get the ride and their parents couldnt keep footing the bill, injuries, all kinds of shit

Eddie Hicks, Mouse McCoy a couple others. Troy Blake.

Wasnt it the next year that Bruce Bunch, Rick Hemme, and another rider (cant remember his name) were killed at Ponca City? Tragic...great careers cut short like that...

I remember one copy having a picture of Larry Brooks when he was racing 80s and thinking he was a badass kid. I lived for this magazine when I was a kid.

All 3 of those would have had amazing careers probably. Sad day.

Really enjoyed the Cycling East monthly newspaper sent to District 7/ 13 members produced by Stan Dorothy and Chip Miles . What a super time in mid Atlantic motocross circles good times never to be forgotten.

No, or at least not that I was aware. He would often ridicule the inquiries of mini riders with some the most insulting banter ever written. His satire was humor and I couldn't wait to read his column every month. This of course pre-empted the PC movement.

Paul Denis was a straight bad ass on those KX80's. I wish he'd see this thread and chime in!

^^great time to be into dirt bikes. Iirc that mag started as mini cycle and added the BMX action later?? What a sea of yellow then.
Sadly they went to an all BMX format by 82 or 83. I still have most issues including this one. It was a sea of yellow in 78 until the kx80 came about then the cr80 which as the first cr80 ad stated , it was a red hot pepper in a world of yellow and green jelly beans !!!!

If u had this mag often u will recall EC Bert , the Whiting Bros and Orvel Knorvel the kid drawn and submitted cartoon.
