Agree.. it had been on my mind and thought I would go ahead and make the post. Very interesting read and a great way to learn about the Vital Community on a more personal level.

It's not a career, but I've been a lab tech for 4 years. I research fungus part time and am a full time student. I have one more semester to complete my undergrad in wildlife science.

I'm impressed with the variety and talents present here. I envy many in their careers as I have yet to decide what exactly it is that I want to do. Being a huge nba fan, I especially envy OP. Go blazers!

Out of high school family owned a Suzuki and Polaris and atk shop for several years then we sold it to a much larger shop and worked for them few years then went out on our own again till economy tanked.

My dad still does it part time but about 9 years ago I started working at a water softener company part time and am now one of two managers last 5 years I also work for frito lay part time where my dad works full time.

I'm constantly looking for a industry job and have sent resumes and had interviews but guessing no college degree and not being in industry for several years didn't help me.

I definetely want something better and more.
Hey small world I used to work for Frito-Lay as well!

Ok, I'll play...

I work in the Motion Picture Industry as a lighting technician. I work on Television, Feature films, Commercials, rock videos, etc.
I'm what is called a "Rigging Gaffer". I lay down "rig" the lights, cable and generators, along with Arial lifts and underwater lighting, when necessary. Then come back after the 1st unit is done filming and strike/ wrap it all up and return the equipment. Other than the military, it's got to be the most wasteful buisness there is. I sign off on over $100,000 in equipment rentals every week, just in my department. It's been a good living, but I'm looking forward to retirement in the next 10 years. Going on 30 years (21 @ Warner Bros studios and the last 6 @ Universal) over 73,000 hours and am still 19 years away from collecting social security. Shocked

Senior advisor, product development, Arctic Cat Inc.

I mainly test chassis, track, and suspension designs and their overall production viability. I live and work in Wyoming but I do spend around a month per year in Thief River Falls.

I also make money selling and leasing of suspension designs I create and patent. Mostly R/C car stuff. I raced R/C professionally for a couple years in the early 2000's and cut my engineering teeth as a product designer for Associated Electrics. I designed the V2 Factory Team shocks.

At one point in time I was a lead Precision Sheet Metal Mechanic (similar to a machinist) for the Aerospace and electronics industries. I programmed CNC machines, developed processes, trained people, etc...

In 1991 I became a software engineer, and started developing video games professionally. I've continued to do this for a living except for the few years that founded a national high speed internet service (2002-2006). I learned a lot about business and new technology, but the business did not make it.

I've developed games for Mindscape, Disney, Midway Home Entertainment, Sony (SCEA, SOE) and various smaller companies.

Today I lead a development team on a kid's MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) game.

Plus I invent stuff.

30 years in telecomm sales and after starting a company in 76 with two partners grew it to 47 employees and 15 million in sales only to have my partner (3rd partner left three years into it) give it away to Warren Avis 12/84 when Avis bought the company for book value. Moved to CA in 86 moved to the other side of the fence when I was recruited to work for one of the manufacturers we had represented. After 25 years of corporate BS I decided at 51 to pursue my passion and have repped a US manufacturer of muffler packing material for over six years. 2.5 years ago I moved to Maui and after mornings in the office managing my accounts I spend the afternoon M-F with a Downs Syndrome teenager and occasionally sub on the weekends for an autistic 9 year old boy. On the 17th of January I take on my biggest challenge when I start spending 6 hours on Saturdays with a pretty much non verbal aggressive 12 year old autistic boy. In my third year of special needs work and even though it can be extremely stressful at times I cherish the relationships I have built with my "students" and their families.
Wow that's awesome!

It Consultant.

I take my team and go into large fortune 500 companies and get paid to fix issues that either they have no ability to fix or that their own staff could have fixed in half the time for less money if corporate politics were not involved.

I have worked for some very small effective companies and some very large dysfunctional nuthouses. I get called in because I have been there done that a bunch so for some reason people listen to me. All in all I like what I do but the political side of my job is wearing me down.

Maybe just the only one to be young enough to still do it. I was in the Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma in the 80's. Currently I'm a lead tech for Praxair at a Liquid Hydrogen Facility.

This is pretty cool.

I guess it sounds like I'm one of the few who doesn't earn a living from some form of construction, manufacturing or IT. I graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from UT and went to work for Frito-Lay. While there I got my MBA and immediately did what absolutely no-one does upon receiving that degree - I took a 50% pay cut to go work for my parents. Their medical clinic was struggling due to the economy and geo-political tensions, so I spent a year doing a complete turn-around. I left that job with $10K to my name but it was worth every minute for how much I learned.

Now I work for a small management consulting company, mainly in the oil & gas industry lately.

Looking to start my own company in the next year. Maybe a bicycle company. Maybe a software development company. May become a grocery store owner. Who knows.

My best job though is the one that doesn't pay. I work for my church's volunteer construction group. On Saturday mornings we go build ramps for handicap people, fix roofs, install indoor plumbing, etc. It's one of the most rewarding jobs I've ever had and makes it easier to spend the week days sitting in front of the computer.

I own a commercial sign shop as well as an outdoor advertising business. We own billboards, sell for larger companies like CBS and build new boards. I've been TRYING hard to land Feld as a client to do all their billboards for supercross wih no luck.

Here is a digital build we just finished.

I rode into my 20's, (obviously not a career), partied through my 20's and worked with my late dad for a few years, which mainly consisted of sitting in boardrooms and offices talking shit between mouthfuls of crap sammiches.
He was involved in the biotech industry and had developed a product in '97 which we manufactured in our own TGA, GMP approved production facility. After spending the time and money to set it up, the site where it was situated was purchased by Bidvest and everyone had to go.

We outsourced production after that to a reasonably large contract manufacturer with catastrophic results.
A huge product launch to all national distributors had to be shut down with a voluntary recall before it hit the ground; the product was allowed to be shipped out with half of it being contaminated even after the person in charge of quality control and 2 other people saw the results from the microbial challenge were way off!

We lost everything.

Sorry, I had to vent and I may or may not be drinking.

Now I just dabble in this and that until I figure out what's next.
My brother works in the sign industry so I can be found doing this on occasion.

Graduated in 04 with a culinary, hotel & Resturant management degree. Went on to be a chef at some 5star restaurants & hotels, then a kitchen manager at some casual fine dining spots. After being in restaurants for 15 years, I got burned out & was tired of the long days. I had no time to ride, see family, eat healthy or be happy. I left to go work for sales in a restoration company. I was promoted to regional sales manager rather quickly & on the project manager. It's been great the past 3-4yrs & I couldn't be happier with a career change. At 31 years old at the time, it was extremely scary changing careers & trying something completely new. Restaurants is all I ever knew. This year, a business partner & I are opening a vapor store & lounge. Pretty exciting endeavor!

Went to school for electrical engineering, ended up a software QA engineer... go figure. I work for a company that does anti piracy software for bluray players. It's a fun cat and mouse game, there are companies off shore who's whole entire business is trying to crack our technology.

On the side, I started to develop android apps this year. It's kinda fun and after I'm done, they make passive income from ads. It's not a whole lot but it pays for my riding for the most part.

A lot of really interesting jobs out there. I was just thinking how I feel like politicians campaign on bringing back jobs of the 70-80s era that do not exist anymore, and will not exist anymore....
