Just watched the video on the Australian SX site where this guy shows a lil of Chads factory Suzuki. He says there is between 80-100 grand in those bikes!!!
I find that hard to believe??

Lots of R&D time put in at the race shops and testing parts. Back in the mid 70's when factory bikes were true to life handbuilt works bikes the factories were spending more than that. The RC Honda's shared nothing with the production bikes. At least today they do start with production parts, some of them anyway.

I would too. I have heard that some bikes have that much in suspension alone. May or may not be true, thats just what ive heard?

Especially when you add the shipping costs of sending the shock and forks to japan to have the clickers adjusted.

lol... Those guys do way more than just adjust the clickers. I cant imagine what riding a factory bike would be like. It would be awesome.

i rode rodney smiths semi factory werks scooter once. bout a half a lap and parked it...too much for me. blue sky and high times forever...lol

Just think how the racing would be if the motors were 100% stock. Only suspension modifications. Imagine how some of the privateers would shine and the money they would save. Wow would that be cool!!

Parts in low quantity with tight tolerences are expensive. Factory level bikes have a lot of them.

Pretty cheap when you compare around $1mil for a MotoGP bike. $100k is a very conservative estimate.. the bike itself might not be worth $100k.. but there is many $100k's in time and development to get there. There's about $1500 just in titanium bolts and fasteners on a factory bike. Looking at Pro Circuit, they have their gearboxes built by the same group in the UK that do F1 and Indy gear for some of the top teams etc. $$$$ everywhere.

The factories were spending over $100,000 in the 70's and that's in 70's dollars. Adjust accordingly.

I remember a mag having Kiedrowski's 92 KX250 coming in at over 60.
Considering the production rule and 4 stroke tech, i'd say 100 is low as well.

That gearbox stuff about PC is crazy, never heard that before.

Factory Honda hand made suspension forks and shock run around $125,000, Magnesium Carburetor $18,000. Hand made cam $3000. Those numbers alone put the scooter around $150,000 if everything else was stock. Save one for the cool clutch levers HRC runs.

I thought i remember reading an article about MXKied's 100k kawi back in the day. RacerX maybe? Seems like it is the development and unobtanium, but it would seem logical to me. Especially when you think about hte time and engineering that goes in to really just two 450s here in the states, cost per bike raises substantially.

Regarding the PC gearbox -

PC and all the factory bikes (besides having different gear ratio's inside) most likely use a process call REM to all the gears. What it is is a process that helps reduce friction (like DLC on the fork and shock shafts) ... less friction, easier too turn, more HP. It's been a common process in autoracing gearbox's for many years. All expensive stuff.

There's been a lot of autoracing input since the 4 stroke came into the SX/MX world. From re-designed rocker arms (ligher and stronger), heavier valve springs (why do they run the RPM's up so high?), coating on the pistions to reduce heat, different cam profiles, different air-intake sizes, etc...making small production runs at high engineering levels all this adds up the $ and hence why factory bikes are in the 6 figures. Heck, PC head motor R&D guy is Drino Miller. His background is from TRD and Porsche. Drino developed the Toyota GTP 4 cylinder motor (2 liter), twin cam, turbo that produced over 1,000 HP in qualifing (850 hp in race trim) in the IMSA GTP sports car days in the 80's. I bet he's not cheep.

And we've only just started the EFI phase. With EFI, the computer has the potential to open up traction control, launch control along with different fuel mapping, etc.... In the autoracing world, a top EFI engineer can make a good 6-figure income, so you can add that too the budget.

So...why are factory bikes so expensive? It's the new fender plastic they get every race Cool plus the swagSilly

Are you asking why the RPM is up where it is?

I agree with you in the fact that some car technology is coming into play on the MX side of the business, mostly from F1. ..... Motorcycle cyl head design has been ahead of the car guys for years.

Correct.. based in the UK.. i believe now have a US set up as well. Cater for the following main motorsport classes:

Formula One
WRC
Indy Racing League
Grand AM
Worldwide Touring Car Championships
Sports Prototype/GT
Cross Country Rally
A1GP

Certainly not going to be cheap.
