Anybody know of any spots near pittsburgh? I like woods riding and slate dumps occasionally too. I live in Greensburg if anybody knows of any local spots!
There's a freeriding/trail spot near Pittsburgh called Hillsville. I've never been there but all my friends that live near Pittsburgh have been there.
It's not too far from you (Donegal/Seven Springs area.)

1. Finleyville
2. Hillsdale
3. Wellsville, Ohio
4. Canonsburg
Coming from Detroit, all of it is incredibly technical. I don’t mind the rocks and ruts, I do mind the ruts and rocks on steep hillclimbs that are an eighth mile long.
Wellsville is the biggest, followed by Finleyville. He has mentioned the cops are cracking down on people parking @ Hillsdale these days.
I tore something in my knee at Hillsdale. I’ve been to Finleyville twice. Watch out for overturned and burnt cars in one of the gravel pits. Canonsburg was the least challenging for somebody used to flat ground, I liked it the best.
I know switchback was just completely rebuilt. Haven't been there since though. Its been a while...
As far as woods riding, there's Pine HIll in Natrona heights along 28. TONS of trails there. Trails in Russelton along rail road tracks. Same with Saxonburg (same railroad tracks, just a 15 minute ride.)
There are some trails in plum/penn hills / new Kensington. Not sure if they're all connected or what, Haven't ridden any of those.
Parking is definitely the hardest thing about it. My parents live right off the railroad tracks in Saxonburg so its pretty easy for me to get on the tracks and go to most of the riding spots out in that area.
Switchback
Creekside
Mx acres
Pleasure Valley
Doubling Gap
Rocket raceway
Roaring knob
Highpoint
Steel city has been flattened for a couple years now
High voltage, plum creek, challenger, beaver valley, and pretty much every other track in the area have closed for one reason or anther.
There’s a handful of private tracks, but unless you know someone they don’t really exist and I wouldn’t recommend “sneaking on” them. They’re private for a reason. Respect that.
Trails are pretty much everywhere but a lot of stuff is getting shut down because of too many people and destroying land/having parties. Best bet is pay the fee and race aworcs, or go to a club like scrubgrass or mines and meadows. Moto is a dying thing in swpa.
Mx acres is pretty primo and usually prepped nice. A lot of the A guys and local pros practice there. My son in law has practiced there a handful of times and digs it. Also, not very expensive but not certain of the woods ,although I thought there may be a hare-scramble type of track there.
Rocket and Roaring Knob are both almost 2 hours from Pitts. And Doublin Gap is even further.
I have a private practice (mainly Vintage bike style) and I have a couple of buddies that have private tracks too.
As far as good woods/trail riding, there is a ton of that in the Bell township /Saltsburg /Avonmore area. Parking isn't a problem when we woods ride. We typically park at one guys place or another and scoot right into the woods. Its mostly farmland out our way. We can actually ride all the way to Altoona thru the woods ,although I never have ,but the other hard-core woods guys have. I have much more of a Moto background, I don't do those 8 hour woods marathons, lol. Haven't had any issues this past year with irate land owners, but a couple have talked to us,and they are really bitching and moaning about the SXS people and quads. Those guys seem to be the ones partying and disrespecting the land owners wishes. Us bike guys are all ok ,lol.
