Anyone ever have the threaded inserts in the gas tank for the shrouds strip out? I have had this happen twice now where i cant get the bolt out and the insert just spins. Any advice or input on how i can possibly get it out??

Happened to my old Yamaha. I don't think you can get them out. I just took some putty type stuff like you would use to fix a small crack in the radiator. Not the JB Weld stuff, some kind of steel putty I got at Auto Zone. I've fived motors with that stuff. Put it all round the insert careful not to get any on the threads. Let it dry and no more spinning inserts. Looks kinda ugly, but it did work.

Take either a small straight blade screw driver or a awl and lock it in the space that the nut has wallowed out and lock the nut from turning and slowly back the bolt out.

f first thing I do is hit it up with some PB blaster . Let it sit for a while. Now wedge a screw driver between the nutsert and the tank to hold it. Grab a impact gun and put as much air pressure into the compressor as it will take [that get's the RPM's up] hit the trigger and out it comes. If you have buggered up the head of the bolt they make turbo twist sockets that grab harder as you push down on the impact, best extractor for that occasion.Just like taking the clutch basket off when you do not have a basket holder,,impact guns work great for that also. The best thing is preventive maintenice. never sieze and the correct torque when its new. After it pops out reweld the nutsert with a 2 part epoxy. I am not a big fan of JB weld for that application.

When you fix it start using anti sieze on the bolts and a torque wrench. It sounds like you have overtightened the bolts.

My friend picked up his brand new Honda and noticed one of the bolts on the shroud was loose. The mechanic tightened it with an impact. He had the same problem after that.

Pops, what happens is the spacer locks against the thread insert and spins the whole thing when you go to loosen it. I cut the plastic off and with a saw cut the head off the bolt. Then I could slide the spacer off and unscrew the threads with my fingers.

The last time this happened to me, I took a drill bit that was bigger than the shaft of screw and drilled the head of the screw off. When I did that, it mangled up the radiator shroud somewhat, but I was able to hold the nut better, and grab what was left of the screw with a pair of vice grips and work it out.
I had to buy a new radiator shroud though.

This a very common on Cobra 50s. The best way I came up with is to use a windscreen nutsert which is a expanding rubber gromment similar to a freeze plug in a engine block only much smaller. If you have ever replaced the windscreen on a sporttbike you know what I mean, Honda CBR ones work great.

Stop using impact guns on your gas tank bolts they ALWAYS overtighten them. Never been an issue with any of my bikes since I use a wrench and hand tighten. The impact will ruin the insert holding area. I don't know why people insist on using impacts for those bolts my buddy did and all of his inserts got messed up royally

The only idiot using a impact for tighting a bolt was a mechanic ? at a dealership and your clueless buddy. They work excellent for LOOSINING nuts and bolts on a bike. Having said that I still use it to snug up a clutch basket when there is no basket holder around .A couple burps with a freewheeling basket has always done the trick both ways......So 324 did you get them out yet ?

Impact guns? Who the hell said anything about one of them? I dont think anyone in their right mind would use one of them for the shroud bolts. Come on think about it!!

Yes i got them out.. Sprayed some penetrating oil down in there and let it sit for about an hour. Then i tried one last time to loosen them and by the graces of god the 2 i was having a problem with actually came out.....
