Morgan Hill, CA is a really nice place. Great community. Located about 50 minutes south of South SF.

This! In about 10 years or so this will be the official language of California so brush up on your language skills. Another cost you need to consider if you have kids is the cost of private schooling because the public schools in this state suck balls! When I was in school way back in the early 70s we were at or near the top in education and now we are almost dead last. College back then was virtually free in-state, and now it's in the range of $20-30K a year for a decent four year college.

Here are a few things to be ready for, based on some of the things you mentioned before:

Your water bill will EASILY be $100 or more. I'd be surprised if anyone in California will ever pay less than that in a month.... ever again.

Gasoline is, of course, much more expensive. Also, they plan to start charging a tax per mile now to pay for the roads. That's on top of registering your car, which is several hundred dollars per year.

Things like car insurance, food, and electricity cost a lot more here.

Last but not least, and please don't take offense, but I love it when people from other states say they "drive in traffic all the time" and they "have seen the worst." Unless you own a car and drive in NYC, you don't know what SoCal traffic is like. If you commute during rush hours, expect to spend an hour or more for a 20 mile drive in some places.

The good news is that the weather out here rules and the riding is epic. You can get a nice house in Temecula for $500K or less.
My water bill is $30.00 a month.

Electricity cost was higher when I was in New England.

I disagree food costs more here and there also is no tax on it.

EXCALIBUR- Serious questions. Do you have work lined up anywhere in CA? Do you have enough money saved up to not work for 10 months to a year? If you think its "easy" to get a job in the industry out here in your 40's with kids, think again, you will be spending everything you have just to get a job (unless you are already connected). Being a "Work-a-holic" doesn't mean dick out here.
Definatly coming with plenty of cash to pay my way for a while.
I was going to get a job changing semi tires they are always hiring for that in every city everywhere.

It is hard work but I like it. Also I own my own engine broker business and do pretty well with that. Im sure people out in Cali need engines for cars and trucks.

When I spent a month in Temecula back in 2012 thought that was heaven. It was January and mx was everywere.
Living in Catalonia I enjoy pretty good weather all year long and lots of good tracks too. But if I lived in a cold place like the north europeans or you I'd move to Cali for sure.

I visit relatives in Indiana last fall and I don't blame you from wanting to make a change.

People complain about the high cost of living here. They do not mention that the wage scale for a person with any skills is much higher than you will find In depressed States. We are booked into the end of next summer doing home remodeling at proposals based on hourly wages double of what we would be able to charge in Indiana.

Traffic gets to you? Avoid living in the shitty areas where you will deal with it on a daily basis. Heat bother you.....move close to the coast or mountains. It is affordable regardless of what others say. I am a small time contractor and live 5 miles from the beach in San Diego county. My youngest son out of HS makes a little over minimum wage in a cabinet shop and lives in the same area and he is out on his own getting along just fine.

What I love about this place is I will be able to cruise around the beaches or mountains on my Triumph year round.....tshirts in the dead of winter is just fine with me. Most of America might have four seasons but unfortunately 3 1/2 of them suckasss

One thing I've wondered about California is "how's the hunting situation there?" Is it easy to get permits? Do people hunt? Are there accessible places to hunt? (and by all means, I don't want this question to lead into gun control arguments, or animal activism arguments, etc. Just an honest question about something I like to participate in).

Moving to the mountains will get you no decent paying job in Cali and moving to the coast is not an affordable option for most. I can't speak for Indiana, but in NC, we have 3 good seasons, if your one like me, who hates winter. Spring and fall the weather is just like Cali and summer is hot and sometimes humid, but with the low cost of living I can afford a pool and boat, no it's a non issue.

Also, the wages make up for some of the difference, but not all. When I left Cali as a union HVAC guy, I took roughly a 40% pay cut, that's not double by any means.

You have to be in a lottery to get ONE dear tag, If your lucky enough to get picked...lol

Deer aren't as plentiful as out here, with less dense forest to hide in and natural predators to keep their numbers low. I've never seen anyone protest hunting personally. It's probably about the only thing I haven't seen protested out there..Grinning

My friend in Ca. is an avid hunter. He goes to other states to hunt. Also there are so many laws just to carry your guns to go to the few ranges left in so cal. Got ot love Idaho, buy and gun, take it home the same day and just toss it on the seat next to you.
Agree with the 100k just to live in Ca. Might check out buying an older class c motorhome and renting space at an rv park as one can check out the different so cal areas without the hassel of renting contracts.

haha, that's how it is here too. In most cases here, as long as you're not obviously committing a crime, police officers would probably be interested into seeing what kind of gun you bought, haha.

We just spent a week in Lake Arrowhead. Cabins all over the place for around 150K. You could buy one and make the payment by working at Mcdonalds

You ever been to the coast in San Diego area? Believe me when I say we are all not wealthy in this area......you might not be able to afford beachfront in La Jolla but go inland a few miles and you are fine. This place is filled with military families and you know they are not being paid well.

40% pay cut is huge btw. And unions here are dead. The best way to make money here in a construction trade is to go out on your own. If you are remotely reliable and do good work you will be swamped

Btw I've never been to the Carolina's but that is next on our vacation list., looks beautiful there. Going to try n do it early Oct

I would love to go out west for a mule deer hunt. It's certainly on my list. Hopefully by the time my kids are grown and I can actually get away for a couple weeks to go on an elk hunt I'm still in good enough shape to do so, haha

Cool, you should check it out, it's pretty in NC.

I've driven by lake Arrowhead, isn't it quite a ways from a major city just over the grapevine? I suppose whether you can afford living a ways out depends on what you do for a living. I do computer related stuff now, so I will always need to be near a major metropolitan area. I hated commuting 1.5 hrs one way everyday out there, that's no quality of life to me anyways.

I have been to SD, going inland anywhere in Socal, means your in the desert...lol. Yeah, unions have always been dead in Socal, Norcal is a little more union friendly. I m not in the union anymore, because what I do now. Your right though, I have no doubt's that you are swamped, there are a lot of people in places like La Jolla with money to burn. Smile

O man... the "gun reform" is horrible but I was just stating that going to a range really isn't a pain.

thanks Kenny T and Myke for the info... I have been from SD up to Santa Barb a handful of times and through all the driving often thought that there are Wal Marts, Lowes, Home Depots, Targets, etc. etc. with employees that are making it so it's definitely do able if you want it bad enough. I would think that if you had any kind of skill that work would not be hard to find to make a little more money.

Excaliberbmx follow your dream. if you want it bad enough you will make it happen and if not you can do what I tell my son, move back home at least you will always KNOW that you can make it back home as you were. There will always be pros and cons to each so it's all in what you want to tolerate as to be able to do what you want where you want.

BTW my son is 20 doesn't make that much money, lives a few blocks from the beach in LB and is doing just fine out there.

See you there in 5 to 6 at the same places doing the same things...

You can get a nice house in Temecula for $500K or less.
that sounds like seatlle traffic. a 25 mile commute is easily 60 minutes no problem and usually 90 on a lot of days if you leave your house after 6am. and on the accident days ive seen 2hrs plus many times

You can get a nice house in Temecula for $500K or less.

that sounds like seatlle traffic. a 25 mile commute is easily 60 minutes no problem and usually 90 on a lot of days if you leave your house after 6am. and on the accident days ive seen 2hrs plus many times
For almost 2 years I commuted from palm springs to Irvine everyday (126 miles each way)

Usually my commute want too bad on the 91 as I worked a night shift of sorts (11AM to 9PM) so I usually missed rush hour. However one night I traded shifts and left at 5PM.....

There were 3 accidents on the 91 before the 15 interchange, it took me 4 hours to go 15 miles. I swear I thought about leaving my car in traffic and start walking home, probably would have got there faster.

When things go wrong on the 91, they go REALLLLLLY wrong
