I believe the numbers 100 through 111 were intended for visiting FIM riders to use? Im sure i'll get corrected on that one.!
Regardless, I don't remember anyone complaining about the old system.

Career numbers need to be common place amoung more top athletes for branding. Relearning numbers every year makes it difficult for a casual fan to stay involved and interested.
As an 8 year old on a 65 KX I was a fan of the mx kid... And ran number 3 on my bike, why? Because #3 was my favorite number. Next year emig was #3, I almost forgot who the mx kid was. And forever imagine emig as 3.
Does Jimmie Johnson get less respect for his accomplishments because he's #48?

To me,on the contrary, should be the right time to "retire" some few number for those riders such as RC4.
I mean Bagget is a really good rider but that number 4 is someone else property
