Maybe guys that are multiple time champs in the 450's deserve a number for marketing, like 7 and 22. But has anyone on Vital ever bought any product based on a permanent number other than maybe 7 gear?

Like others have said, I liked seeing which rider earned which number each season. Now the numbers don't mean anything.

I remain a fan of the present numbering system.

For the it is The Crime of jerseys alone are the only upper body protection required. We are smarter than this people or are we?

Hanson and the #100 is a bad example. He has never earned the right to chose a number, he wears it because he likes it. And fans recognize it.

I believe the numbers 100 through 111 were intended for visiting FIM riders to use? Im sure i'll get corrected on that one.!

Regardless, I don't remember anyone complaining about the old system.

I totally see what you guys are saying and yeah, it seems trivial....but this isn't a few vital members bringing it up and whining about it, a long standing MX magazine published an article discussing the need for change or a revamped systemt. If they're writing an article for their audience I'm sure they've probably been peppered with questions about the system. additionally, we see confusion at the same time every year when the numbers are announced, and even had Matthes from racerx (another MX publication) write an article trying to explain it. Are there bigger more pressing issues out there? Sure, you bet. Is it okay to bring it up on a forums to discuss the current state of the MX numbering system....

Just curious, Did any of you guys read the MXA article? I thought they did a good job laying out the case for change....

Name me one mainstream sport where an athletes number changes every year?

Career numbers need to be common place amoung more top athletes for branding. Relearning numbers every year makes it difficult for a casual fan to stay involved and interested.

As an 8 year old on a 65 KX I was a fan of the mx kid... And ran number 3 on my bike, why? Because #3 was my favorite number. Next year emig was #3, I almost forgot who the mx kid was. And forever imagine emig as 3.

I like the permanent numbering system, but top 10 to 20 numbers should be difficult to obtain and difficult to retain.

i've always disliked career numbers. I say wear the number you earned, including #13.

How about base the rider numbers on total career points. #1 goes to the previous year series champs. #2 goes to the active rider with the most career points (combined 250 & 500). I imagine an exceptional 250 rider could get a top 20 number before moving up. The top 10 would be filled with 450 champs and consistent front runners. It would reward both excellence and longevity.

I don't really see the point.
To me,on the contrary, should be the right time to "retire" some few number for those riders such as RC4.
I mean Bagget is a really good rider but that number 4 is someone else property Wink

I love the permanent number system. IMO I think that non permanent riders should be able to choose their numbers, 1st picks to the best in points. Numbers based on performance mean nothing to me. The system isn't that bad, allow the best riders to build a brand around their numbers.
