I ride carbon wheels that are well built. They're good, but they didn't blow my mind. I question whether they were worth the $. Cheap alu with tubes vs nice carbon rims with tubeless will be a huge difference. Not so much if the alu and carbon are comparable products, same hubs, and both tubeless.

Yeah, that looks painful. Carbon is supposed to be more durable than alu though - do you think an aluminum rim wouldn't have also failed in your case?

Check light-bicycle.com for low cost rims that people have been mostly having good luck with. There's a huge thread on mtbr about their rims. A friend is racing DH on them and had good luck so far.
I am 95% sure there must have been a previous weak spot(Crack or ding) in that wheel when it decided it was enough.
Carbon is stronger than aluminum for sure except once it is compromised, or in the case of impact from the side I.E. rock etc etc. I think aluminum I would have noticed a ding or dent where whatever happened in the first place to weaken it came to light. I will check that link out thanks. For now I went back to some Sram ROAM wheels since I was able to get a good deal on them but after demo'ing a set on ENVEs they are on the bucket list for sure if I can find a deal at some point. Retail on them is crazy..

I have owned expensive wheels with lightweight aluminum rims and they flex like crazy, noodle around in the corners, and have trouble staying in true. My carbon rims are crazy stiff and as a result handle much better. That's the biggest benefit I have noticed. I don't think the weight is that big of a deal. I wouldn't pay the premium price if it was only a weight issue.

Ive been on the light bike carbon rims for the last year or so in both 26" and now 650b..

Im not small or slow and they have been holding up great...On my 26" set I flatted and hit a rock with no air and made a tiny crack in the beadhook...they sent me a new one for free and I never even had to take the old one off as it didnt grow and it wasn't in an area that mattered structurally..

Im on the hookless 35mm ones now and they work really good...get allot more sidewall support although they do give your tire a more square profile...Ive had a stick go through my spokes and break 4 and had no problems with the nipples ripping out they are solid..

Honestly I'd pick them over enve as the enve's arnt as wide..

took a labor day trip down to bend oregon and did some riding. goofed off at phils trailhead a bit, and rode the mckenzie river trail. great weekend. If youve never ridden it and live in the PNW, do yourself a favor and go!

Yeah, whatever it takes. Riding the trainer is deadly boredom.

My man! I'm on my second Intense and I absolutely love them! Mine is about 4 years old and I'd love to have a new one.

Here's mine, 09 v10. Pretty old but who cares.

Thought I'd throw these ones in there too. Smile
