I d say by all accounts the Yamaha seems to be the best performance bike out there .BUT I would tell u to ask as many people u can about there reliablity . There wasn't many bought here in 14 , but the few that were had shocking reliability .which is so strange for a Yamaha . From gearbox , to loads of engine failure s , again there was very few bought , but out of the 10 or so I know at least 7 of them had major problems ,just something I would do a bit of research first if u were getting one , great bike performance wise tho

Theres not very many people who can run the pace of a mid pack B rider that has never raced...

That said, the KTM is built for faster riders and alot of its power is in the high RPM range (you can ring it out like a 2 stroke) and the suspension would not be that bad for you.

The problem with the yamaha is that its mainly a bottom end bike (amazing motor)..

In order for you (based on ur description on ur speed and size) id go:
KTM
Yamaha
Kawasaki
Suzuki
Honda

Also if your really just a bottom-mid pack C guy and dont want to admit it, cant go wrong with the honda. Friendliest powerband of the bunch.

Everything I've read says its a mid range motor though I've never ridden it.

I'll either be on the Yamaha or a kawi in 2015.
The 12 i rode and the 13 were for sure top end motors. Havent ridden a 14 or 15 yet, maybe its changed.

All there power for years has been in the higher RPM range. (talking about the ktm)

2014-15 Yamaha YZ250F, adjustable computer program for power delivery that you like. EFI, no bog and awesome response, suspension is fantastic and durability second to none. 0% financing for 6 months and Yamaha Contingency if you are racing.

I agree with considering what dealer is near you, the deal they will give you and how they treat you.

If you are going to maintain the bike yourself, buy parts online and don't care about the dealer. I would go KTM all day, actually I would go Husky because they look so good!

Bought a brand new 14 kx250f at the end of last year and the bike wasn't very good at all . We decided to trade it in for a 14 yamaha 250f and it was the best decision I've ever made the bikes awesome id recommend getting a yamaha.

I asked a similar question a few days ago but mine was between the Yam & the Honda. The Yamaha, I believe is the best bike, but I'm going with the Honda because the dealer is very close to me plus we've been using them close to 15 years. I won't be able to get the best out of the slowest bike anyway. I know the Yamaha has a 30 day warranty whilst the Honda has 6 months here in the UK.

If resale value is any consideration....there is no doubt that KTM is a bit stronger there as well.
I was super impressed though with the Yamaha 250's in the outdoors this year. They have upped there game for sure.

This is what I've heard too. It's nowhere close to the old 2013 Yamaha in terms of reliability, but on the other hand. The old carburated 250f was bullet proof, but the new F.I 250 eats it alive when it comes to performance. I know that Yamaha had a couple of recalls on the new 250, such as the water pump (twice) etc.

True, but that's easily fixed with a ( oversized ) modified water pump shaft

I think we are getting close to someone officially "stamping it"...
oh its been stamped already.

Jeremy Martin did that a few weeks back.

I d go the Honda all day long , from this years bach of Yamaha s you d need to be using that 30 day warranty . as I say I know of 7 engine failures , and loads of gearbox trouble with them this yr , yes they are prob a bit better than the Honda proformance wise but not that much .if ur no a pro. think ur making a wise choice .

I would like to know where everyone is getting there info on the yamaha not being reliable. Not one has had issues around my area and it is full of blue. The "issue" they had was such a small number that yamaha didn't even do a legit recall. As far as best bike, I have ridden the Suzuki, Kawi, Honda, and own the yamaha. The honda is super choked stock. If you put a exhaust on then it opens up a bit. But it still isn't as fast as the Kawi, which isn't as fast as the yamaha. The power on the yamaha is bar none the best. Has great torque for a 250 and it pulls up top. It is the lightest bike In the class, and it handles very well. Best bike I have ever had.

And it was actually hilarious. Point is, unless you're trying to qualify for a pro national, go with whatever is cheapest or has the best contingency if you're going to race.

And Yamaha is taken care of those issues with the 2015 model. Like you said, its not even close. Yamaha has better suspension, engine, and less weight. I am Honda guy who would have a very hard time not buying the Yamaha.

Curious on what's the best box stock 250f. I'm looking to buy a new bike and wanted to know which one would suit me best right out of the box with no modifications. Im 5'9 1/2, I'm an aggressive rider, never raced so in not sure on where my speed is at. I'm guessing around a mid pack B rider. I really like the ergos of the honda but the motor won't suit my riding style as I like to ride really high in the rpm's, also the suspension is too soft since I weigh 165 with no gear on. I needs a bike with good top end power and "good enough" suspension for my weight and skill level.
Thanks.
Edit: also I come from 2 strokes, never owned a 4 stroke so if there's one that might kinda feel like a 2 stroke that would be a plus.
how about you do everyone a favor and just buy another 2 stroke?

If you aren't racing competitively, I see absolutely zero reason to buy a 250F. ...and if you have to have 4-stroke, why are you not at least considering a 450F? (assuming you are not considering one)

...that doesn't mean anything. its just words strung together.

[horse] power is just the name of the "unit" given to the solution to the equation of torque over time.

Power doesn't exist without torque - no matter what the rpm's are at.

Well I want to start racing soon. And there no way I'm gonna buy a 450. I've ridden them before and don't care for them. I turn faster lap times on my 125.

Looks like the majority of people are saying to go with the YZ, I'm really not a fan of the yz's ergo's but I could learn to deal with it. I haven't rode one but just from sitting on them It feels super wide.

I thought the same thing but when I rode mine for the first time it suited me a lot more. I'm 6'5" so that May have been a factor in my choise because the yzf is a bigger bike.

Suspension being too soft is not a problem with the bike, putting the right springs in a bike is a prerequisite for any bike, some just happen to already have what you need. The magazines have gone full retard on this for years. Correct springs are not a modification, they are an adjustment.

yeah, but i could learn to deal with it. but in the mxa mag it said even though its the lightest it feels the heaviest. that might be a problem, i would prefer a light flickable feeling.

The yamaha is not the lightest anymore, the honda is lighter

Edit: my bad, there tied at 231 curb weight.

I think it is more that the honda 'feels' the lightest (and darn well almost is), it is very flickable

There is no doubt that the 2014 Honda isnt the most powerful bike out there, and it doesnt pretend to be...the 2015 is faster and better suspended than the 2014 model
