"And, who does Luongo, his paid mouthpieces and the European fans see as the savior of Grand Prix motocross? An American, who is going to switch sides because he will double his already enormous salary by tapping into the neediness of the GP series."

Not quite... Far from it.

Original Unadilla and Sears Point were the closest you had in the states IMHO.

Oh, I don't kmow, BobbyM - at least it - Carlsbad - wasn't manicured to death - it was left in it's 'normal' state. I got to go there, quite a bit in the last few years of it's operations. No 'ripping' at all done to the surface ........

Hmmmmm, Sears Point:

I wonder if the terrain is still there - wasn't it on a Military Base?. Probably a housing tract now, like so many things become.

Can you imagine this section on modern bikes? Nah, the idiots in charge, would probably rip it, and ad lips to the natural jumps / humps, thus ruining it.

That sounds cool in theory but I bet it would be a freaking nightmare.

Yeah it is. I was just there back in the spring for an area qualifier, I thought it was poorly organized, rumor is that they were pulling water from somewhere without permits or something and the local people bitched...

Just wondering why the have done two GP in Brazil, I think it would be call if they brought one of these to USA, and I'm sure they'd get some American wildcard entries.
How do you not know that hardly any riders or spectators showed up for the last GP's here in the states??????

This was a question asked to David Bailey and asked of several other riders that have ridden the GP's in the past when they came to America. Why don't todays riders race the GP when it come's to America. Greed, they will do nothing for free. Also if they get beat by the Euro's their value goes down because they feel they are better. I would never let the Euro's come into my country and not show up with American Pride and say your not going to beat me in my Country. Its American Pride. Something that seems to be lost in our generations of younger riders as we grow older. Yeah they race 30 races a year if they attend them all. Yes injuries occur during the year and yes there is n money and a big cost to race but like David Bailey, Gary Jones and a few others from the past. You don't let them come in thinking the Americans will not ride because they are afraid to be beat. Its your Country fight for it.

Why not counting the gp in the US as a national. You would have the best racers of the planet and big crowds!?
9/8/2014 7:41am
hahahha, yea right, the mexico Gp was a big succes a few years ago. I was so good the riders didn't wanna start ... Tongue

I'l hope they find a few wildcard riders for mexico or we wil have to do it with less than 15 riders in mxgp ...

The only reason we race in Brasil, mexico, Qatar .... is because someone pays a lot of money to the promotor

Purse money.

Who the fuck wants to race a 3 day weekend for no purse money as a professional?

The 125 dream race at Washougal is a more lucrative race for American pros than the USGP, and we all have Luongo to thank for that.

Mr. Info, I think it's unfair to the guys who now race 30 times a year as it is to call them out on their country pride for skipping a rare-weekend-off race, unless you also called out all of the Belgian and Dutch riders when only Marc DeReuver showed up and raced the FIM World Championship Supercross at Arnhem...

The first GP at Glen Helen in 2010 was set two months before, when all of the teams had already mapped out their limited time between SX and MX in May for testing. The second time, there was a year's warning, but still not enough time to get ready for the races your team had invested millions into for you to win.

While you're at it, why didn't any GP riders (other than Ken De Dycker) take their free-weekend in America to race Hangtown the week before Glen Helen?

I respect Mike Alessi for doing the GP and the national, but I don't hold it against anyone else for not doing likewise.

I think it makes the series points goofy on both sides...unless it's scored separately.

We have 40-rider gates. Say the GP crowd has 20 riders from there side. That means half of our usual crowd sits on the sidelines...or maybe a portion of their crowd doesn't qualify after flying over.

How would you handle purses?

I think the fantasy side of this is good, but the reality part of it would be tough to make happen.

Bingo, And then there's the conflicting sponsors, conflicting TV networks, conflicting schedules... And I think it would be tough to ship our paddock to Europe, as the folks in SX can attest. The closest we may everl get comes in a couple of weeks, as well as every year in the MXoN.

Purse payout just like AMA nationals, entry just like nationals (it's just the better option of the two, having no purse payout will not provide the proper incentives) . If 20 of our riders sit out, so what? We only give points to the top 20 in the class anyway, so maybe a handful of the 15-20th place guys miss out when they otherwise would have scored points. Not a bad concession to have a GP and National on the same day (or two days, whatever ends up being easier to run like GP or National).

If it is announced ahead of time, the affect on series points won't matter. Everyone will know the race is coming, everyone will know it is harder to score points at this specific race.

I for one wouldn't care if half our crowd sits on the sidelines, making it in this race should be extremely difficult because it is the combination of the best in the world. Feeling sorry for those riders that can't make it is the same as feeling sorry for the other 30 riders that show up at a regular national and fail to qualify.

So you have 20+ privateers sit on the sidelines after paying the travel expenses, with nothing to show for it.

You're talking a fantasyland race, and what's good for you, but not necessarily what's good for the riders. Smile

If we need an extra race, maybe we should create a Motocross of States event. Maybe Ben LaMay could invite AC222 to be his partner on Team Alaska. Wink

Here how you would have to do it.

Labor Day weekend. AMA on Saturday. GP on Sunday. on Monday "Red Bull TransAMA (with a big purse) for the top 20 guys in each class.

You'd have to make it the last round for each series, and it would all hinge on Red Bull's willingness to front enough purse money to keep the riders in town for one extra day.

I still don't see how that is different from any normal national? You have 20+ riders who sit on the sidelines after paying travel expenses already. Why would these 15th-40th place national riders be owed a spot at every national. They have to earn their spot week in and week out.

It will be a difficult race to qualify for, and everyone should understand that. If you (as a privateer, not you GuyB ) do not think you can qualify, and will regret paying travel expenses knowing there is a chance you won't qualify, then don't enter. That is how it works now. Riders who show up to qualify for nationals already are making the decision to do so after accounting for the probability they won't qualify. This decision making process wouldn't change, only the probability of not qualifying would change.

I understand it is not good for privateers that would miss out on this race, but since when are they owed a spot at every national? Making it into this race would be a bigger reward than making it in any other national and as such, will have a bigger risk/difficulty in qualifying.

This is the most reasonable answer, conflicts resulting from the two organizers.

Making any other argument (riders missing out, two day vs one day, purse, entry, points, schedule) doesn't make scheduling the event impossible, all of those things would not cause a large enough hurdle to overcome.
9/8/2014 9:37am
I have not followed the GP's so I know very little
But, Based solely on the MXA article, I'd say the GP's are somewhat jokish.
I sure hope there is more to them than that.
Obviously the guys at the top are very fast.
Sounds as if our 20th place guys would battle for a GP podium every week....and not get paid.

Or run our national format and have 3 classes 250-450 and GP's have there 250's and 450's run the same gate but separate points that way they could fill a 40 person gate.

This was a question asked to David Bailey and asked of several other riders that have ridden the GP's in the past when they came to America. Things have changed. A rider could want to go, but I doubt he has keys to the factory semi and would want to pay all the costs of getting his bike and crew there with him. Then there is a the capitalism, greed is good and all that jazz that has become such a part of the American attitude. Look at what the NFL players union has done to their practice schedule. Lets face it, the riders have come to understand that they are doing a job and why do a job if your not getting paid? Then throw in the fact that they don't own any of the equipment it takes to race, and you see why none of the riders can just choose to go to this race or that one. We are not even taking into account of the fact that they probably appreciate a day off every now and then.

I don't state any of the above as a negative or that our society is trending one way or the other. Things have just changed since the old days and we need to understand that to answer some of these easy questions being brought up. Just like the 2 stroke/4 stroke thing, its all pretty easy if you think about it.
