thinking of heading down for some sightseeing Sat after the race and was wanting to get within a hour of the Statue of Liberty. anyone know a good place to stay that close? we will have most of the day on Sunday before we head back, what else should we check out while we're close by? we will be in our motovan so kind of concerned about parking and theft, should I be? any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Can't help you with parking your moto van. First off, ever been to NYC/Manhattan? If you've I might not be much of help.

It's pretty hectic in the summer and walking around town can get exhausting. Lines to getting on one of the boats out to Liberty Island can be super long. There's a bunch of sightseeing for a life time. I appreciated Empire State Building a lot, also just walking around Central Park and Times Square. I also liked the tour at NBC/30 Rockefeller Plaza, but I've heard it changed over the years and you can no longer see the studios of SNL/Conan ect. Just walking around, looking at buildings, contructions, train carts in the subway is things I always appreciate when I travel. I'm a Swede though and everything is a lot different to where I'm from so you might not see it the way I do.

I went there after budds creek one year. I parked the motorhome at the airport and took the subway into midtown. I used taxis and subways for the whole time.

Hit Greenwich for some bands and comedy shows.

Got a late cancelation on Broadway and scores some tix.

Food is amazing.....anywhere.

Carriage ride was worth it, but had wads of cash that week. Today, I might be a bit more frugal.

Statue tour was a waste for me. I hate lines and waiting like sheep.

I stayed at the days inn midtown.....just fine. Try bidding for travel.com to get the latest bestest prices.

Overall, Good time.

If your motovan is larger than a C1500, I would reconsider driving it into Manhattan. It's a huge PITA.

Theft is not nearly as bad as it used to be, but it's not Mayberry. If your motovan is plastered with stickers or graphics telling the world that you are an active motocrosser, you're tempting fate.

If I were in your position, I'd take Metro North (public commuter train, http://www.mta.info/mnr) into Manhattan and get around on the subway. The subway is easy to use, cheap, and safe. Parking a motovan in a commuter parking lot has it's own hazards, though. I don't think that's a condition particular to New York.

Teggers has a solid plan, I'm thinking we should just wait and do this another time, like when we have more than one day and have time to plan a couple things. I'm fine with that. thanks for the suggestions, I won't rule the stop out yet because my wife really wants to go, but...it looks like it may be more trouble than it's worth.

pretty sure you can get a ferry to the statue of liberty from the Jersey side also. Way less hectic.

We just spent two weeks around that area in our 40' RV pulling the wifes car. We stayed in Jersey City, NJ and we stayed at Liberty Harbor Marina. Google it, it is a gated location and most likely will have space. Super nice people in the office, One block away from the light rail that can take you to Hoboken (which suprisingly was crowd free and very pleasant. Good food too.) You can get a cab to the Jersey ferry which goes to Ellis Island then the Statue of Liberty. While there, I'd suggest going to the Trade Center Memorial. Very humbling experience.

Go check out the South Bronx it's beautiful. JK don't want to get you killed. Honestly the city is quite safe for a big city these days unless you venture out to the very bad neighborhoods. You can't go wrong anywhere in Lower Manhattan.

If you have a van or car look on the west side of New York City for open air 24 hour parking and use the subway, bus or cab to get around, n.y.c is a safe city you can walk just about any where which is nice also, try to stay below 96 street, have fun it's the Capitol of the world, please don't hate me for saying that! I love New York city

If you want to stay north of NYC and take the train into NYC. A safe area to get on the train and park is where I grew up. Golden Bridge or Mt Kisco ave big parking lots and about 60 minutes to grand central station. From there you can get anywhere in NYC. Use the Metro North train to get up and down.

The staten island ferry is not a bad idea depending on how big your rig is. But parking and driving anywhere near the city is harsh.

This^^^^.and you can take the PATH into NYC from Hoboken. Also consider Secaucus (where the SX was) safe hotels and can take the train into the city.

I agree with these guys.

I would highly recommend not driving into the city. I live 10 mins from the GW and still take the ferry or subway in.

I am sure that's a great plan if they were already on that side of the Hudson. (Southwick for example)

Coming from Unadilla they would most likely head down 8 South - 17 East - 87 South - 17 South then head to Hoboken, Jersey City, Secaucus... etc...

FYI - That is approx 5 hour drive in a regular car doing 75.

Stay in jersey the hilton , or the holiday inn in Hasbrouck Heights , you are 20 mins by bus to Times Square , they each have a shuttle that will take you to the bus stop , the problem with the trains they take you more down town , the path trains either take you to the World Trade Center , almost in Brooklyn at that point or pen station , witch is 10 blocks south off time square , when you get out off the bus station and you had enough off Times Square ask some one to point the way to the Hudson. River , there you can catch the circle line over to the statue off liberty , and if you have a few mins to kill the intrepid is night next door , I grew up there so if you need more detailed info pm me

Jersey City. I believe I stayed at the Hyatt there but may have been the Hilton. Anyway, the hotel is right on the river and if you get a river front room, you have the most awesome view of lower Manhattan. You will essentially be directly across from the World Trade Center stood. The location where you board the boat for The Statue is only a few miles from the hotel. Have fun. See you at Unadilla!

I kind of did the same thing a couple of years ago. I had two friends working in Jersey City, NJ putting in a new gas line under the Hudson into New York City. I watched the national at High Point and went up to join them for a couple of days. Did the whole tour thing, but Ellis Island is what I still talk about. It is some cool history if you are into that. Empire State building is a must see if you go, again because of the history there. As Teggers said, lots of good food and shows downtown. Go, you won't regret it.

Jersey City/ Hoboken is the place to stay. This is where I live. Plenty of safe for Motovan Parking. If the wife and you are interested, I have a place we rent on airbnb. Feel free to inbox me.

Secondly, Wings Castle in Millbrooke is awesome. It has been on discovery channel and American pickers. Peter, the builder and owner, is a unique but interesting guy. His property has one of the best views of the Hudson Valley towns in the state. Millbrooke is a cool little art town, and the winery is a fun day to spend an afternoon and get sauced while entertaining the wife. Make sure you check out the upstairs of the barn. If you book wings castle b&b, tell Pete Jeff and Jess from jersey city sent you and he may give you a discount.

Enjoy

Ok guys you're going to have to slow down, we need to have time to moto to lol. I dig cool history stuff so thanks for the info mx317 and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get lured into spending a few days out there non moto related, I appreciate everything and may hit a couple of you up for more info.

looks like she's wanting to stop at Belhurst Castle and winery since we're on a limited schedule this time and it's on the way home. there's a couple other winery's right along that route so I'm hoping we can stay on schedule lol. appreciate everyone's input and sorry for the change of plans but you know how women are haha.

if you're at Dilla look us up, 804 in 250 class, will be my kids second go at making a national.

As a guy living 20 mins from dilla and going to NYC on sunday-park at Secaucus junction and train in to Manhattan for the win. Altho you are not going this trip anyways. If you are into that kind of thing, the nascrap is on at Watkins Glen on Sunday after the race, about 2-2.5 hrs west of unadilla. Its on the bottom end of Seneca lake whereas that castle and winery is at the north end at Geneva.

We stayed at the Millennium Hilton right next to Ground Zero. Private parking and within walking distance to just about anything you'd want to see, especially if you use the subway. I wouldn't stay there for more than a couple of nights because it's pricey, but well worth it for a short stay. We had a corner suite on the 30th floor. Out one window we could look down on the footings for the Twin Towers. We had a view of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty out the other window. The people were friendly for the most part, and honestly I didn't think driving through the city was a big deal. Way better than Boston on both counts. There's a reason the term Massholes was coined...

I agree with you that hitting up Unadilla and then the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island is a lot to do in two days. In the future, if you plan to see the Statue of Liberty there is another alternative way to access the Island via New Jersey's Liberty State Park...http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/liberty.html No NYC hassle. Also, prior to 9-11 to ascend the Statue of Liberty you had to take an early boat ride. Later boat rides only allowed you access to the grounds of Statue's base structure. There is a lot to see in NYC and you don't need to bring a vehicle into it. As mentioned from Hoboken NJ you can access Penn Station (aka Madison Square Garden) or from the east side of the Hudson River you can directly access Grand Central Station from numerous train stations as far north as Poughkeepsie NY. If you only want to see the Statue of Liberty then Liberty State Park is the way I would go.
