Whatever you called them, they were the beginning of the end of the Euro-stuff.

can i ride it, can i ride it, huh huh huh.....

can you imagine going out to the local track and just roosting the 450f's with that thing. On a local level Im sure it would still be competitive, I am a firm believer that the 2 stroke is the best all around moto weapon!!!!

Probably the 1981 Maico 490, but it is in a close battle with the 1973 Honda CR125, 1981 Suzuki RM125, 1987 Honda CR250, 1996-thru-2000 Yamaha YZ125s, 2002 YZ250F and the 2007 CRF450.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I didn't like my 87 CR250. I don't know if I got one that was tweaked, but that bike took every opportunity to toss me on my head. I sold it and it did the same to the guy I sold it to. Oh, and from that list they didn't make a 1973 Honda CR125. The first year was a 1974.

isn't this the 73 model?

Not exactly. The first CR125M was delivered to dealers around here in mid-late summer of 1973, about 5 months after the release of the 250 and a week or two after California got them. I'm not even sure the tiddler had an official 'year'. In Texas there are no titles for MX bikes, just MSOs. I had the first one to hit this area. I think some call them 73s because it came out in the same model year as the 250 and they did not release another until 1975. But I seem to recall the factory announcing that there would be no changes to the 125 until '75, though they made some tweaks to the 250.
there were some modifications/improvements made to the "green stripe" 125's prior to introduction of the "red stripes" in 75'. the clutch actuating lever on the right hand case was changed pretty early on. also, additional material was added to the frame around the footpeg area, due to several instances of the mounts (with peg attached) shearing from the frame.

seems the first 125 Elsinores hit N TX in late July / early August of 73', and were gone before the tires could warm showroom floors. the next batch came through around late September.

Mine went from crate to trailer to track (with a little rip in the Honda North parking lot. The sales guy bitching at me that I did not know how to break it in. Break it in? We're going racing!). It never saw the front of the shop. That was mid-late July.

Hey, i am looking for a part for my 1987 Honda CR 250.
It's the right-side engine cover... it houses the water pump and oil filler.
A piece broke off on my original one and the bike is now stuck in 1st gear.

If anyone knows where i can find this part, please let me know!

Thank you,
Marc

I agree with goat.

the 86 cr125 was a lot better then the 87. better suspension and better powerband, stock.

even after tuning both the engine and the suspension, it still wasn't as good. and modified, the 86 kicked the shit out.

my modified 125 for 86 ponca had the engine tuned by Donnie Emler, and he put a cr250 silencer on it!

thing sounded like no 125 anyone ever heard.

:-)

anyway, just agreeing.

very disapointed with both 87 and 88 cr125s.

During the 87' MX season I was riding a year old 86' KX250 in the 250 Expert class.
A buddy of mine who was constantly beating me, later in the year sold me his used 87' CR250 with a blown crank for under $1K. He went out and bought a new 88' CR250, and I replaced the crank in the 87' and proceeded to beat his ass on his old bike.
He regretted selling the 87' to me, but I loved the thing. Handled great, awesome power, and had the best set of forks that I had ever ridden.
I turned around in 89' and bought a new 89' CR250 and the suspension sucked ass on that bike. I wish I had kept that 87'.

This is the very same bike before Scott Steger worked his magic. Shown here be ridden by Tom Carson on the Legends lap at HP.

Kurt - Never should have sold it.....

I never owned a 1987 CR250....I had a 1986 CR500 that was just awesome...too awesome actually for me. I traded it in on a 1989 CR250. What a pile that was....first year USD forks that could not be modded to work for crap. The first race I ran on the 89 was at Sunset Ramblers in Galion, Ohio. I got the holeshot, then on the first double a guy jumped into me and wadded both of us up. My bars were pretzeled and so was I. It was an omen. Should have just left the bike there.

me on my '87 back in '87. i never really cared for the bike. i had a '93 also. imo, both bikes are way over-rated, particularly the '93.

Here's one I recently picked up in Houston from the original owner. Brakes were froze up but he already had everything to rebuild both masters and calipers. Damn near spotless, very sweet bike. Looking forward to riding it.

The 86 had more of a Supercross powerband and the 87 was more suited for motocross. I loved both those bikes. The suspension on both of those were great, then they screwed the bikes up for years to come when they switched to the inverted forks in 88. I've had Honda's since 84 and I'd say the 87 250 and 02 450 are my favorites of all of them.
89' was the first year for inverted forks and yeah they sucked for years.

Yes Mr CR500Rider, I remember my 86 cr and it was a great bike and reliable to, hot or cold dosen't matter,it always started easy on the first kick, handle great on tight track and in the woods but 87cr is faster on motocross. True love from both bikes!!

I have rebuild the same bike, but instead of the original cylinder, I have a 1985 Mugen cylinder. Must say that the one shown on this topic is much nicer then mine..

Lovley bike you got there,I have one to.
I planning to make nice a work's replica of mine, so last week I picked up a Honda racing
ignition cover on ebay, and now I'm a little curius on that Mugen cylinder you have, are they hard to get.

Yes, they are hard to get. In England they ask about 1300 euro for one, without a piston.

This one is a 1985 cylinder ( last year they made it) without the powervalves.
So I took out the powervalve system in the engine.

I usually rebuild CR500's but I got this one for almost nothing.
One of these these I have the alu subframe ready for this one..

The bike is for sale btw..because after I rebuild bikes, I sell them to continue rebuilding other ones.

Do I like riding too? Yes...I like riding my CR500AF.

No, it's a regular 250, no big bore.
The powerband hits more as on the regular 250. Consider it a small 500.

Very nice bike! I would love to race that today!

I loved my 1987 cr125. Here is a pic of it in action in the 125 junior class mullet and all!

Bought another 87 cr 250 for 230 dollar today, it's braked apart, so I use it for spare or even put it together and have two bikes to ride.
