Multiple bikes, hmmmmmm.......

Big vintage nut here and our local vintage club would rent the track so it was just us and not just getting a couple of gate drops in the middle of 30 motos of modern bikes on a regular race day. We would have a small number of classes for modern bikes, aimed at the kids and vet classes to help cover the track rental costs. Both of my kids and I would ride vintage and modern classes so we always had six plus bikes with us at any given race. Talk about odd, climbing off a 74 CR250 and on to a YZ250F modern bike on back to back motos. Careful grabbing that front brake for the first time on the new one!

Fast forward and the kids have grown up, off to college, got married and the young one was on the school swim team swimming 6 days a week somewhere in the state of Texas every Saturday. No time for bikes for the last quite a few years. Young one graduated and joined the Marines so we've been playing catch up on my garage/shop project and some home remodeling we've put off the last ten years . Marine boy gets some time off in the next couple weeks and wants to go ride so I'll have to skip a work day and go have some fun before he heads off to Spain for six months to a year. Been working double time the last ten years as well trying to nail down something called semi retirement......almost there but about had enough of that too!

Bad side to restoring and racing multiple bikes? Multiple everything, tires tubes, chains six at a time, cases of oil, grips by the dozen, pistons by the six pack. Got to the point when things were winding down that when a bike shit the bed we would just park it and take another one out the next time. Eventually you end up with a bunch of broke bikes, and that's where I'm at now. You also eventually come to the conclusion that you no longer own them, they own you. Laughing

Gonna have to take some pics at the track here in the next couple of weeks with me holding a current newspaper so mxb2 will believe I was actually there!

lol, sounds good, and no photoshopping pics, lmao

Not only do I think that it would look great with your collection, I know it would. I have done something similar. OP, we put most of practicing and local race time on the two smoke and use the 250f for big events. I personally think having multiple bikes is the way to go as one may need parts etc. Sheriff, I know, you put a picture of a 450f up but I thought that my situation was similar enough to comment on.

My brother buys really clean bikes that have already depreciated (5 years old).

Conclusion: instead of a 2 years racing budget he bought 11 really nice bikes that he still has. (i.e. 500 CR enduro, like new, made like a Gilles Lalay replica at the ISDE, 250 YZ Peterhansel ISDE, 520 KTM, 350 Husky, etc etc etc)

Recommendation: never train on an expensive bike.

I keep one practice and one race bike. It's a lot cheaper than just running the piss out of one bike. Every year my previous race bike becomes my new practice bike and the practice bike is sold for a new race bike.

I have that combo in the garage at the moment Smile , 2008 YZ125 which i rebuilt from the ground up, '12 YZ250 two stroke and '14 YZ450. Its nice to have the choice of ride, depending on my mood. The 125 only comes out on special occasions, but its sooo much fun to ride and hassle all the 4 strokes on.

That's a nice stable you have!
My 144 is only for special occasions too. The 250 was supposed to be my "everyday" bike but I'm still working on suspension tuning.

I don't ride much anymore, maybe 30-35 hours a year in total. I race for the thrill of doing starts but usually fade after the first lap. This makes it harder to justify a third bike. But man those 14 450s are so much fun to ride!

I owned a new YZ125 and YZ250. I am selling the 250 to buy either a new YZ250F or CRF450. I want to own a four stroke - will be my first

Never had more than one, at any given time, always used and several years old. I always get a kick out of beating guys with an $8000 bike, with my 11 year old bike.

That's where I'm headed. I race a CRF 450 in my vet classes, but I'm restoring a 87 CR 125 to playride and maybe vintage race someday. It's the same bike I had when I was 15. Best of both worlds!

The answer to the question "2 strokes or 4?" Is both.

My ex-wife always gave me shit about having so many. She said "you can only ride one at a time". That's one reason she is my ex. I have 4 bikes now. Can't count how many I've had over all the years. But my daughter did a few years ago and in 10 years of racing it was like 21-22.

Now that I have my YZ250 setup for offroad/woods I've been playing with picking up a second bike just to have fun with on the rare moto day. Something older, cheaper, somewhat iconic to play around on, 87 CR250? 96 CR250? ProCircuit imitation KX125?

Also owning and living at a track has it's benefits. I've ridden lots of friends bikes that come out.

Let's see now How many do I have ? I have to go look in the garage ( Old himers)

81'490 Maico: Evo race bike.just a ton of fun to ride/race & it pisses off the kids with the 450 four strokes when you pull them down the straight..LOL

83' 490 Maico some day the parts will make a complete bike! I need to start to assemble it.

03" KTM 525Sx, just got done rebuilding it after 200 hours on the motor! just have to fix the leaky petcock.

14" KTM 450FE sweet present to myself.

00' BMW K1200Rs street bike / gas saver & Asphalt shredder!

So I would say that 6 or 7 personal Bike's would be good if you have the room , got kids\wife that ride at least one for each of them.

This is only if you plan on riding them, if collecting the sky is the limit!

I currently have three:
2002 CR250 with an Eric Gorr 265cc '00 engine - this is my primary race bike
1996 CR250: backup race bike, practice bike
2014 150SX: practice bike

It's nice knowing if one of them breaks, there's always a spare.

You can never have too many bikes...until you run out of garage space!
