I heard he went down and was trying to alert the flagmen when he was nailed by Malcolm. I realize nobody is perfect and a flagmen cannot see everything. But in a sport where a rider is so vulnerable (no roll cage around them when they go down) that maybe it is time to advance from the volunteer program for flagmen at professional events before one of these riders lose their life because a flagmen is too busy being a fan and not paying close attention to the track around him.

Are they really volunteer. We have a regular flag crew that is trained and paid.

I hope not.

They seem just as, if not more important than a medical crew.

I've flagged a few races and it takes some discipline to get out of fanboy mode and concentrate on situational awareness.

I think they're all paid, but there's a mix of MX Sports crew (which also have blue flags), and yellow flag crew.

Ditto. Always seemed humble & cool. I hope he can heal up enough in a week to suck it up & race.

Hate to bring thus up...but is it 100% sure he won't be on Team Kawie next year?

I know they would be paid, but do you know if anyone can offer their services for the weekend?

I know I have been to races before and see some of the flag men watching the action on the track more than they r keeping an eye out for downed riders. Seems like a pretty important part of rider safety and I would hope that the guys doing it are highly trained and not picked from a pool of volunteers the weekend of the race. Scares the shit out of me to see guys dodging bikes.

I saw it first hand. Weimer went down and was trying to alert the flaggers because he was in a blind spot. Malcolm came over the jump and had no place to go. I can't believe Malcolm didn't get hurt also. There was too many blind spots on the track and definitely not enough flaggers. A couple of times riders came real close of getting hit when they went down. I'm not trying to bash MX sports, but I think they really need to step up on the amount of flaggers they have. Maybe even spotters with radios to notify flaggers on the track that a rider is down.

The AMA guys are paid but the rest are volunteers. I helped at Thunder Valley as a WOG guy and have been racing since the early nineties. It helps to have that experience of being a racer. There are some that have a hard time concentrating on the track in front of them, but I will say the AMA guys did a great job at the race in Colorado about making sure everyone was paying attention.

Most tracks give the flaggers staff food, free t shirt and a little bit of cash. The old saying goes ya get what ya pay for.

What sucks is, Jake could have used this two week break to get fitter, get the bike better, instead hes going to spend the next two weeks trying to recover from those nasty bruises. And honestly, I think he wont be fully healed and will be further behind in fitness and bike setup come the next round.

When it rains it pours. Sucks for Jake.
