Best Mods for a YZ250F 2010-13

Edited Date/Time 5/22/2014 9:23am
Currently racing the 2011 YZ250F, I know a lot of you guys think the bike is pretty mediocre. After riding my mates 2014 I can feel the "oomph" EFI gives and I'm honestly happy with mine because I like a bike that's a little less snappy. I'm most likely set on getting a new exhaust kit for it when I get the money, so what could you guys recommend? As well as any other mods that will really uncage the bike's potential. Thanks

I had a friend I raced with in the mid 80's who had one of the fastest '86 yz250's I'd seen. Everyone would ask him what he did to the bike to make it that fast. His answer.....he cranked his wrist and said, nothing. He simply held the throttle on longer than anyone else dared to, then would essentially panic brake in the corners. His name was Scott Watkins and he was one of the fastest A riders Ohio had. Sorry I didn't have any kind of part info you were looking for, but Scott had something there, his bike was making about 40 hp at the end of a straight when everyone else's we're making zero just because he held it on for one or two seconds longer. Food for thought.

In that case upgrade your brakes!

Yeah I've been looking at the Akro's and the reviewers love them, makes it quieter and gives enough power.

I put a Hotcams stage 1 intake, and stage 2 exhaust on mine. Removed the counterbalancer, Dr. D pipe, Dr. D oil tank eliminator.
the thing ripped.... had a long pulling motor - much longer than stock. There are some other cams you can get to customize the power to your liking.

I never felt any vibration and never had any issues because of it.
The other manufacturers don't run a counterbalancer in their 250F's, nor do they run an extra oil tank.

3mm plus stroker crank, 3mm plus cylinder/piston, head mods, bored carb, drd pipe, and some web cams. My old 2011 ran pretty good.

I would first have the suspension set for you. After that or if you already have that done, I would buy a few sets of tires, sprockets and a chain! And just a question why would you want to "uncage the bikes potential" if you are happy with the power of the bike now and like a "less snappy bike".

X2 on the Suspension, make sure it's sprung for your weight and at least have it rebuilt. A revalve isn't that much more coin depending on who you use.

Did the suspension when I got the thing man. I wouldn't want it more reactive then it is I just want more out of it, it just feels like it's going as fast as the gear will allow too early I guess. I don't know, it's probably just carby and the bike itself but I'm definitely set on getting a new exhaust kit.

Please don't take this as a smart ass comment but go out and chase the local fast guy on a 125 and you will see that power is probably not what you need. I say don't spend any money just yet. Instead work on carrying your momentum and corner speed. Work on those things and get real good at them and you will be passing 450 s with no problem.

I'm curious about this too? How would this increase power? One less moving part?

I know that Honda 250Fs have a counterbalance shaft... because I had to replace mine.

Nah man, I understand where you're coming from and I'll tell you one thing... I'm not riding the bike even close to it's potential, I just want the right parts and advice to so I can tune it to my liking and have the feel I want. I've got the perfect 125 buddy too haha. The power thing I was talking about forget that, it's what the reviews said the YZFs are like through those years. Just tell me what mods you fellas run and I'll be taking a look. I had a pro ride my bike and tell me that stock it was faster then his friends tricked out one so I guess you gotta be careful.

yes, slightly less drag on the motor.
They hashed this out on Thumpertalk, so I'm sure you can read all about it over there.... there are pro's and con's to doing it on the YZ250F. I tried it, and ended up leaving mine out. Not sure about the Honda 250F's though.

I think you just need to go ride this piss out of your bike, and worry less about "setup" and more about seat time!

You want a Black Ops Moto ignition coil. I was surprised that an ignition coil could make a difference. Most in noticed in the middle revs. Starting easier too

Also, the thing backfires like a mofo when I let off. Anyone know what's going on?

R and D powerbowl, JD jetting kit, Twin Air Air Filter, SUSPENSION! SUSPENSION! SUSPENSION. Had a 12 now a 14 yz250f. actually loved my 12, but got a great deal on the 14. Factory Connection definately did great work with both suspensions. Made a world of difference from factory setup.

Jetting is too lean, or you have a leak in your exhaust joint or header gasket. If your sure there are no leaks, go up a size or two on your jets, raise the needle, or open the fuel screw, or one or all of the above. If your not sure, take a jetting 101 course.

Well at first I thought it was a leak but I tightened the clamp and put some of the leak proof putty on, didn't solve it. The hot start lever is broken too so I'm thinking it could be that, like it's not unusable it's just that a part of the clamp shattered and we had to seal it up so it could be a little pulled in. But yeah then again it could be the more technical stuff like jetting which I'm thinking is a high possibility.

Motor wise, I upgraded both cams to stage 2, there is absolutely no need to put a stage 1 in there with all the low end power the bike already produces. I've also got the MotoTassinari air boot, R&D powerbowl, and a full FMF exhaust. I love the way the bike is now, pulls really well, stock I feel like you've got to ride it like a smoker, the power falls off way too easily and requires a lot more shifting.

With regards to your backfiring, buy an aftermarket fuel screw and you're good. No need to pull out the jets quite yet
