That's actually a pretty good price considering all the people spending between $2000 and $6000 on a mountain bike. Myself included.

stuff is as cheap as chips compared to 25 years ago... just because expensive kit is out there , you donthave to buy it , i have been riding since 1974 and never had a pair of boots that cost more than $200, but they were $100 in 1988.. if you buy wisely , dont spunk money on graphics and six changes of kit and a go pro, you can race for buttons

Really? When I raced 85s 03-06 I could have sworn my CR's where close to 3k but then again I wasn't the one buying them so I could be wrong.

I got a like new 06 PW80 for $275 at a garage sale. My other daughters PW50 was obtained by trading a guy a Mossberg shotgun. I know these aren't race bikes but the same machines are a couple grand on the showroom floor. If you buy used and shop around MX can still be an affordable sport. When it's time for 80cc bikes I'll buy a used one and freshen it up for around a grand.

I have bought quite a few bikes from Larsons. When were you riding for them. I wonder if I know who you are?

As long as you yahoos keep paying that big money for those over priced, valve munching tractors, they are gonna keep sticking it to you.

on everything.
Helmets boots too.
Whats the difference between a leather Gaerne in 1982 compared to plastic in 2014?
Cheaper boot for a more than 400 dollar price increase.
I bought my first pair for 79 bucks.
The sole and steel toe thing is the same shit.

I remember when I was a kid.....all kids had dirt bikes.
moreso than bicycles. Today I see more kids stealing shit and vandalizing because they have nothing to do.
and the other ones sit in the couch and get fat and diabetes.

I blame affordability.

This sport is only "more popular" now because there is just more people in general.
however the percentage is far far lower.
No kids around me have ever sat on a dirt bike.
Shit...most rarely see the sunshine.
+1 on the boots and helmets....

The boots and helmet analogy is bullshit. I wouldn't put my foot in a leather boot from the 1980's...let alone ride in one.

I'll say the same thing about helmets too.

You guys need an economics lesson. As long as dirtbikes are made in Japan or Europe they are gonna be expensive because the labor and production costs in those countries are super high even compared to the US. Japan in 1975 was like china today as far as production costs EXCEPT Japanese motorcycle companies were innovating and finding their niche, not exploiting their workers to make the lowest priced goods in the world.

Its a different time, deal with it. Theres lots of boots that arent $600 same with helmets jerseys pants, hell ride in jeans. NOBODY GIVES A SHIT WHAT YOU ARE WEARING.

The difference between 1975 and today is that there are 25 years worth of used machines in good shape and with performance that isnt gonna get you into a FOX MONSTER ENERGY DRINK SUPERCROSS main but will get you riding for less than $2000.

Your $600 xr75 is the same price as an xr80/100/125/ttr125/klx whatever today.

If motocross and offroad is dying its because the people who have the biggest and most direct local stake in it dropped the ball. Im talking about dealers. They should be orgaized to establish and promote riding areas and tracks. They are the local coordinators of riding and should be on the frontlines of the battle for land to ride on. There are 3 parts to the equation; the chicken (rider), egg (bike) and FOOD (riding areas). Without food all the chickens die. Without riding areas (especially near population centers) nobody will buy a bike regardless of how much they cost.

Whats the difference between a $4000 paperweight and a $7000 paperweight? Not much, same as a bike that sits in the garage 360 days a year.

Anyway if you arent happy you can always buy a cheap 2 stroke...its only $7,200... http://www.ktm-parts.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=1425…

Trust me, you guys have it cheap.
Here in New Zealand,
14' KX450F $12,590.00
14'RMZ450 $12990.00
14' KX85 $6,595.00
14' 125SX $11499.00
14' 300XC $14,299
I envy you guys. I could have brought a new bike, rather than buying second hand for the same money.
I know the exchange rate makes a difference, but in real terms, a coffee here costs ~$4.50, Im assuming it costs roughly the same stateside?

We had 5 of them between 07-09 and with a dealer hook-up they were all around $2850 otd. The new ones are the same bike! Sure, I get the 'inflation' arguement, but I highly doubt everyone's pay has increased 40%+ over the last 5 years.

My first new bike I bought was a1980 KX125 for $995.00 Gas was under a dollar a gallon and I paid for them with money saved up running a paper route while in High School

Now the real reality check I am currently making the less on an hourly basis today with 20+ years of on the job experience than what I made in High School. In fact I am making the same hourly as what I made 15 years ago.

The only bright side is I got a job offer with higher pay starting in less than a week Tongue

Pray tell, what's the price on a new KTM 2-stroke? Or possibly a "new" YZ? Last time I checked they aren't dirt cheap. Heck, the post that started this thread is about a 2-stroke so your statement holds no logic.............
