While watching the replay of the NY/NJ Supercross, I started thinking about the FIM name on the series.. And how the numbering systems are so different between the two (AMA and FIM)
My opinion, either have permanent numbers or don't.. for everyone. And why not let guys choose a 3 digit number if there are multiple 3 digit guys on the track when they are racing? Afraid fans cant figure it out? AC222 has no problems.. By trying to eliminate confusion, i think they have mixed two good systems into one F'd up mess.
End rant. What's your opinion?

but nobody is listening, or cares
And if everyone was allowed to pick a permanent number as long as you got like 50 points in a year or something along those lines it would really help marketability, I think it looks kind of funny with someone wearing a #38 Trey Canard shirt from 2011 when he could have always had whatever permanent number he selected is 2008 and ran that for his entire career.

If we want sponsor dollars, numbers need to stick with riders as much as possible.
My only complaint with the current system, if I was forced to come up with one, is that a lot of relatively well-known riders still have different numbers each year and it takes a while to memorize (especially since these are usually 250 guys and have team mates running the exact same bike/gear).
I didn't know you couldn't pick a 3-digit as a career number, that's not cool.
"chad reed motorsports"?
The guys that don't rely on the money (at this point) to get to the races, RV, Reed, Stewart, etc, get to market themselves for bigger money based on a permanent number. Examples being TwoTwo Motorsports and Seven gear.
The guys that DO rely on the money, get tossed a random number and no ability to make a name for it.
And to top it off, your points in a regional series, 250 supercross, count towards a NATIONAL number. Huh?
Seven duece duece is exhibit A, using the pulp show to get the name out there. Is he going to start a gear company? No, but allowing them to make money off their own merchandise after choosing a number brings money into the sport, not just the promoters pockets.. Everyone wins.

I'm sorry but semi permament numbers are stupid. Word association, who do you think of first ? Go !
#2
RV or MC ?
#5
La Rocco or Dungey ?
#3
Tomac or Brown ?
#4
RC or BB ?
#11
Yogi, Travis Preston or Kyle Chisholm ?
#10
Fonseca or Brayton ?
#6
Lamson or ...Lamson I guess ? Who the fuck is #6 now ? Anyone ? No one ?
#19
Henry or Martin ? No brainer there right ? Ok I'll stop. Just my opinion of course but when they went to semi-permament or whatever they call it now they fixed something that wasn't broken. And why Stewart and Reed would start business's with a number that will be associated with someone else in a short time doesn't make any sense to me. But hey whatever I'm just some dude on the internet, my opinion don't mean shit, Carry on !
