What was the most suprising mx retirement?

500guy you come across as a douche... you might be a nice guy tho. Ryan Lockhart retiring but continuing to race was surprising to me.

Bailey. Forced retirement. The guy was at the top of his game, and GONE....still kills me to this day. I think he'd rival anyone, on any track, anywhere.

Christian Craig also surprised me as I figured after a broken back he could come back from anything. I heard he might still be back for outdoors though

His career highlight would have to be shitting in his teammates helmet in superbikes

MC's sudden retirement in 03, I knew he was on the tail end of his career but that one came out of nowhere and under the circumstances (KTM at the time) and his hip injury but I sometimes wonder if his retirement may have been postponed a couple more years if he had stayed with Yamaha or went back to Honda

He was the most talented kid to come out of junior racing in Australia,
It's a pity he chose the party lifestyle, drugs and drink,
Crashed his Porsche into my van at a race day once, coked off his head.

Yes he did. It was a a private track off El Toro Rd in the foothills of Trabuco Cyn. I think it was owned by the Baldwin Brothers at the time. I was out there rolling everything as Daman and Dr D. Were getting ready to go out. Damon asks my buddy who just got done busting laps, "So who's the spode". Hence the name SPODEBOY. He was my hero at the time. I was honored!

Couldn't have said it any better, 500Idiot doesn't know the inner demons people are battling and it doesn't matter why the retired, at least I didn't read that anywhere, I love the guys style and riding technique and am a fan. Whatever caused him to retire shocked me because he hauled ass on the factory Suzuki 450 when he rode it on the west one year and I thought he'd eventually have a lot of potential on one later down the road, so that the main reason I was shocked but he was having personal problems and I've gone through my share and you never know what somebodys battling inside so for you to make that reply makes you look worse than whatever Austin was struggling with, shit for brains. This is a thread about surprise retirements and Stroupe wasn't one of them, anyone following the sport knew that.

I understand addiction better than most and I also understand early or sudden retirement is certainly no surprise.
Have you ever witnessed him doing drugs?
There's many a racer that's kept on racing while on drugs. Racing professional motocross is very difficult. Do you know for certain there were not other factors such as injuries?

What you're doing is slandering someone publicly. What if he did have a substance issue? You feel comfortable as someone 20-30 years older ruining his reputation even further, kicking him when he's down? No, you're just being an incredible asshole. Who the fuck proclaimed you the Internet judge casting your judgment on everybody?
Everything you know is second, third, fourth hand bullshit collected by your douchebag self because you have nothing better to do than slander young people. Go you.

To me, MC. I was young and he was invincible to me. I thought that 03 he was going to come back with a vengeance. It may not have been a suprise to others, but I'll never forget reading about it online.

I'm with Moto Soul Mag.. Getting hurt sucks and prescription pills (if that's what he got hooked on) are a fine line between helping with pain and euphoria. I was 16 when my doc gave me percocet for my shoulder and I'll always be 'hooked' on them in some form or another for the rest of my life. If you weren't surprised he retired, okay. But to talk shit about Stroupe like that is fucked up. He basically destroyed his body trying to race motocross at the highest level and (possibly, not for sure) fell victim to the addictive properties of pain pills. Almost happened to Izzi, happened to Roncada, probably has happened to many other riders on some level or another too. It sucks, but you do sound like a dick when you put it so shrewdly.

Listen, sorry if I offend anyone, I'm just trying to point out that Stroupe retiring was no surprise.

Part of the problem riders face is all the fan boyz making any and all excuses, I wish Stroupe all the best and hope He has overcome what ever problems he had or has.

Im pretty upset about Derek Anderson calling it quits. I always looked forward to seeing how he did each weekend, I had no clue his back was as bad as it is.

Cool man. I wouldn't say offended, either, just seemed like a dick thing to say. I wish Strouple all the best too.

But doesn't that also make his retirement not a surprise ?

To me a Surprise retirement is someone at the top or seemingly healthy and competitive suddenly deciding to walk away.

Hepler was hurt so much and with the head injuries , it wasn't so much of a surprise as it was a good personal decision.

I'll go with RC then, he could have just kept on winning but decided he didn't want to anymore.

Been watching this thread and just now got a chance to respond.

RJ and Bradshaw for me. RJ was THE man in his day. Had he not gotten hurt I think that he would have won more titles. Bradshaw. I had never heard of a top guy deciding to retire because of off the track stuff.

I have no idea why people are surprised that RC retired when he did. He had been riding most of his life, won titles in every Major US Professional class, and had won 10 straight MX titles I believe. Who wouldn't want to relax a bit after a career like that? Besides, it's not like he just walked away one day, he did it in stages.
