for 9 laps and then he didn't. It seems like the tracks so far this year have been so slick, is Dirtwurx trying to save money on
dirt or is this coming down from feld. Plywood showing in several areas and no traction. It has come down to throttle control,
set-up, who makes no mistakes this year. In years past RV1 and JS7 could just grab more throttle and move through the pack,
but this year grabbing more throttle or break means possibly going down. I guess we are getting closer racing and going slower evens out the playing field for the slower riders. This is all just my opinion, anyone agree or disagree?

I agree. Like you mentioned, it seems the tracks are offering closer racing now, but that doesn't mean it's BETTER racing. It seems all the top guys are really close together, but can't ever make any passes, or make up or lose any time. There have been a few tracks this year that have allowed passing and decent racing, but it seems at a lot of tracks the riders ride around like a train with a second or so gap between them. Better racing, IMO, is where guys are swapping positions multiple times per lap, not playing choo-choo.

I actually think there might be something to this, because last year Ryan Villopoto's 2013 bike seemed to hook up so much better than his 2014 bike. The diffence between the two bikes shouldn't be that much different and the settings should be close to the same, so maybe it is the track conditions that have changed. I don't know, but what I do know is that Ryan Villopoto is in a better position this year at 166 points after 8 rounds compared to 152 points last year after the same number of races. RV is in the twilight of his career, probably wants to get out after 2015 while he can still walk and maybe start a family or go hunting or something, so he figures why the heck hang it out on the ragged edge if I don't have to and still win the Championship, which is what Kawasaki pays him to do.

I don't think Windham is a poor rider, but he certainly is no Ryan Villopoto when it comes to winning Championships. KW was always the Bridesmaid to Ricky Carmichael and racing for second place.

I think Windham would have a win already this year. He was the King of throttle control and these tracks would have brought
the faster guys back to him. KW is probably wishing he would have given it another year.

I agree. The dirt has been awful all year and it's causing some riders to stay close to RV. You don't go from dominating to just being anouther guy out there while your still in your prime. It has to do with the crappy slick dirt and RVs bike looking like crap most of the year doesn't help anything. Just my two cents.

I never expected the ATL track to be so dry and hard pack, totally different than last year. Even the SoCal tracks were harder than ever it seems. The machine compaction of the tracks has definitely changed from last year.

Are the track builders afraid the track will groove up too quickly? Are they laying down a thinner layer of dirt and compacting more to prevent bare spots? Is there lime or another additive being used this year?

I guess we will see at Indy if this trend continues.

GuyB, any chance of an interview with the Dirt Wurx guys to find out why the tracks are so dry and slippery this year?

I agree Unc, It seems like the tracks have been super slippery this year. It looked like no one was really having fun on the Atlanta track the other night that's for sure. It looked more like a game of survival out there.... I think as far as the dirt goes, for the most part it's the same dirt year in and year out, it usually gets stored on site somewhere at the stadium grounds or nearby. Feld actually owns the dirt (at least at a handful of the venues I've worked) The Anaheim dirt is stored on the edge of the parking lot and compacted and actually used as overflow parking for the rest of the year. RV is riding extremely smart this year and if he keeps it up the C ship is his. Unfortunately for us fans conservative championship riding doesn't give us the Beastly RV riding that we love so much. RV is a pretty calculated smart dude and has my full respect that's for sure, I'm just bummed James had that bobble otherwise we could have seen this Championship decided at Vegas in the last race possibly the last lap of the season.....

I disagree Unc. Which is more likely, that riders used to traction are struggling to find it on tracks everyone admits are slippery, more so compared to years past, or (and this is the Vital consensus because it just makes so much damn sense) that every other rider managed to catch up to the champ over a short couple of month off season? It makes the most sense of anything ever in the history of ever.

All joking aside the tracks have not been great this year. Guys claim to be tip toeing around each round or saying that there isn't much to separate anyone for the most part (see EASY). That said, everyone rides the same track and RV1 is still in the lead even though he has had only one track with traction all year. Not bad.

I'd love to see RV run away with the lead but it also comes down to being the best team and figuring out what it takes
to be consistent. Although plywood showing through the track is just not acceptable, especially with the jumps these guys have to do. I heard rumor that RV no longer has Kaipo doing the suspension, I would think that's a big change but not sure if it's true.

I asked RV specifically about the tracks being slick, blown out and sketchy by the time the 450 mains go, and his response was that its the added laps of the semis that make the tracks deteriorate like that.

Makes total sense to me.

Dirt does break down over the years. The one track i ride at for the last 15yrs has sections where the dirt has turned to dust. Started out as nice tacky chunky dirt. Not sure that is comparable to what has happened since last year in SX tho.

I heard a few interviews saying it was down to the plywood as well.

If I'm feld, I'm avoiding that. They lost RV and a big title chase in 2010 because of not enough dirt.

The dirt breaks down, but it also gets taken out on bikes, shoes etc... They can afford it, buy some more!

BS...Atlanta was much drier than past years. We need some tacky tracks. Why can't they get some damn moist dirt on the east coast with all this freakin rain we have gotten this winter.

I've read with a fair few of the tracks that with all the lime they've added to the dirt, and the fact that some of them have better places to store it (Under highway overpasses etc) that it's dried out and not getting that year round moisture anymore.
