another funny thing that crossed my mind while reading the daytona thread is the exposure for primetime motocross gets.. other than a select few mx/sx on cbs, its the documentaries of how shitty our sport is, running out stories of broken bones and broken families. gee, thanks guys, no fucking wonder this shit is so damn depressing. piling on a thread about a $250 last place check helps seal the deal on what not to do for a career.

The $200 sign up fee for the 76 riders at the Dallas SX more than paid all of the prize money for the 250 main event!

Same old song and dance with a lot of issues to resolve. First, the privateers could band together and make a difference...but it would take all of them and I just don't see it happening. If they all walk the show will be severely hampered. Decotis' words are true but words alone won't change a thing.

To me the biggest issue is that the AMA has never promoted any of their sports worth a damn, especially to potential sponsors. I always marvel at how NECKCAR has promoted itself and become the biggest spectator sport in the US. A bunch of freakin' rednecks driving around in circles and the last place driver makes over $250,000 per event .

Just for the hell of it I thought of the lamest "sport" I knew of and wondered how much the participants got paid. Well, I think bowling is about as lame as it gets as far as being considered a sport (although it's fun after a few cold ones).

It seems that the average Pro Bowlers Association event pays the winner about $20,000 and last place (36th) gets about $750!

That really makes this situation sad in my eyes!
Wow I can't believe that 76 riders times $200 entry equals $15,200 which is more than the 250 prize pool!! That fact is just unbelievable to me truly shows how bad they fuck the pro riders! That is seriously just has me angry and I don't even have anything to do with it. But I know how much privateer rider's spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, dedicate their lives and more importantly risk their lives to make the promoters rich! I love this sport but it makes me sick how shitty the rider's are paid. If there was something I could do as a fan I would do it! Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

As much as I love the sport and think that these guys don't make nearly enough for the risks they take. The plain and simple reality is that Motocross is a horrendous career choice! The smart thing to do in life is keep it as a hobby, focus on school and building a real career. Then you will have the money to participate in this relatively affordable (even at today's price) motorsport. Kids, you've got a better chance of getting bit by a shark or struck by lightening then you do of becoming the next RC,RV or MC. It's simple math, the odds are stacked waay against you....

If you do have the talent and the passion to go for it, like others have said above, the new internet economy has made it so that you can create your own wealth stream by branding yourself online. I see a lot of these relatively no name privateers have thousands of followers on facebook, twitter etc... These are all potential customers. How many rich kid motoheads would pay Jimmy D to show up at their birthday ride day? Or even at a party. Shit there's all kinds of ways to milk cash out of this sport. The only rider I really see taking advantage of this is Jimmy Albertson, the guy is a genius and has an enormous following via the goon riding brand.

yes I agree riders need to market themselves, but they should be able to get from race to race on purse money. Industry sponsors also need to kick in if they want the sport to grow. I realize that money is better spent on having a logo on a tuf block but if you don have a privateer crashing into it that tuf block it probably won't show tv.

Speaking of how they "risk their lives" to make the promoters money and it makes you so any, do you share the same anger in what our military personnel get paid for really risking their lives? Could they pay these guys better? Sure they could. But as promoters their goal is to make money. They're filling the stands and the gates with the current structure. Why would they pay more? Until riders group together and force change, nothing will. The responsibility is on them to stand up for what they feel is fair. It is not on the fan. And keep in mind that if the riders do get paid more, your ticket prices are going up. The promoters are going to make their money regardless of what the riders are (or are not) getting paid.

I just don't understand how I see that stands relatively full, $30-70 a ticket, and the riders aren't even getting paid enough to cover expenses. Add in the money made from all the concessions and television rights...Not sure what is going on.

How much are the monster girls getting paid to stand around? What about DD?

It's beating a dead horse. There's a ton of great ideas listed here, but at the end of the day, the organizers of the series (Feld) and (MX Sports) for the Nationals need to only do ONE thing. Increase the payouts significantly...it really is that simple. But they won't.

The AMA is about the AMA, Not protecting riders or their rights.

One problem is both the teams, riders and promoters draw from the same sponsor pool Sponsors are going to hop wherever they get the most exposure. The promoters do not let teams and riders sell or even hand out stickers in the pits, so where is a sponsor going to spend their advertising dollar? Certainly no to going to be with a rider or team.

I've even heard of Feld or AMA ( not sure which) fining teams for handing out promotional items.

They riders do not even own the rights to their own image.

Stickers can't be handed out thanks to the fans.

They take them and stick them or "tag" things at the stadiums and the stadiums got tired of having to clean them up everywhere. Years ago it became a major issue where they were being charged and threatened with vandalism to clean up after the races.
I remember the first US open of Supercross at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Every casino you went to there were Motocross stickers stuck on everything, fountains, art work, slot machines etc.

You make some good points but the "risking their lives"is a bullshit argument, so in that case at every track across the country there are riders risking death for a trophy on any giving race day.

The AMA is the structure for professional racers to voice their concerns about the pay scales in AMA sanctioned events. Jimmy DeCostis could attempt to form a rider's union but I don't think it has a chance unless it's closed shop and even still there is a tremendous amount of man hours involved to create a union. DeCostis belongs to this association. He pays membership dues. The first step to address the pay scale issue should be through the AMA.

I thought they race to try and be a winner and champion...if he is racing to collect a check...then he needs to get a job.

At the PRO LEVEL they race for money. Trophies don't cut it.

I agree with you to a point, but think about how much has to be going to FELD, etc.

I think the breakdown for 250s should look more like.

1. 10,000
2. 7,000
3. 5,000
4 4,000
5. 3,000
6. 2,000
7. 1,500
8. 1,250
9, 1,100
10. 1,000
11. 950
12. 900
13. 850
14. 800
15. 750
16-22. $700

add that all up and its $45,000 purse for the 250 class, and do a holeshot award + misc for LCQ and pay out $50k for 250s. Now, in hind sight that is a lot of money that somebody is going to lose out on, BUT it might get better guys coming out to race (say European guys, even just for a race like Daytona). and in my opinion 10th on a 250 should walk out with $1000, err. sorry, $800 after paying to race.

If first place is walking away with less than $7500 (payout) that is a complete joke.

I wonder if there was a option when buying tickets to donate $1 to the purse how many fans would click the box. $40k fans equates to a extra 40k in purse money.

Unfortunately that would not work because the same people that bitch about the purses are the same ones that bitch about ticket prices and would keep that dollar and use it towards a down payment on one of their $8 beers before donating it for the riders.

Little hard to do when neither them or the FIM care.

Feld pay's FIM & AMA the Prize money, don't look toward any of the three offering anything except a if you don't like it go race somewhere else.

Show me one time when AMA actually did anything for these riders that improves their situation.

Man, I do like Jimmy Rippa but so far this season he's coming off as a little whiney. While I agree with his assessment of the SX payout, it seems out of place for a rookie with average results in a handful of races to be making those statements. I understand that he was arguing on behalf of all the riders (especially 250s) but I dunno, get your feet wet first.

But then this week he posts on Instagram thanking Vurb for giving him recognition in the Chargers vs Anchors article, then complained that him and Cole Thompson didn't get any TV time. Really man? How many guys get more than a few seconds of TV time that aren't up front, crashing, or in some kind of exceptional (probably aggressive) battle? Like someone said as far as the pay goes - if you want more money, finish higher. Well, if you want more TV time, finish higher. We all wanna see the local photo jockeys take our picture a hundred times when we go to the track but that's just not how it works.

Anyone else agree?

Actually no. I saw him ride awesome in his heat race with barely a mention. I also saw him work through the pack up to 7th in the main and barely a mention.

What have we learned here?

Feld-good business man
Jimmy the Rippa-not a good business man

My granpappy taught me a valuable lesson about dollars and cents when I was just a little feller......if it don't make dollars, it don't make sense.

According to Observations-Mathes-RacerX, Feld and Jimmy had a little "chat" in Atlanta......... no word on the outcome.

Take a couple sections of nosebleed seats in the stadium and discount the ticket price very deep. Perhaps 15-20 dollar seats as opposed to 50 dollars. Advertise these seats as some sort of program to make Supercross more accessible to under-privileged children. Then, in-turn, advertise that all proceeds go directly to rider purse money.

You kill two birds with one stone. You look like a white knight for loading the seats up with orphans and their caretakers, and you also quadruple the prize money. If Feld teams up with an under privileged childcare organization, they can write it off on their taxes is a charitable cause.

Yea, yea, i know, absolutely horrible idea, never work.
