As SX evolves, its becoming apparent that the longevity of a riders career is increasing. Age and treachery will always beat youth and enthusiasm they say. Going by CR's win against a stacked field at A2, riders better take a long term goal strategy. Could put MC's record on the line too.

How do you think the possibility of early retirement will affect this by riders who do make it to the top?? Villo is a possible candidate to retire relatively young the same as Carmichael did ??

You had me up until the part about MC's record. Nope, not gonna happen. Not in today's competitive field.

Chad told me in 08 he was ready to retire...there's room for a motivated rider to stick around a long time and be competitive. When Tomac relaxes and enjoys racing he has a chance at MC's record.

Kinda tough to say that about Eli now since he just started his 450 career. Scratch that he's already starting off his first season injured unlike MC.

Tomac hasn't even won one main event yet, going off very early to say he can get anywhere near mc. He's still yet to beat any of the current top guns to the flag on a 450 let alone the young guns who'll be there in a couple years.

I'd say mc's record is safe for the next decade or so atleast

If McGraths record goes, we are in for some boring years of supercross.

I think the ones that see it as a job (RC, RV) retire early. I think you could put Tomac in that group too.

Then you have riders that aproach it diferently. They work hard to but they enjoy it. They enjoy the circus, the media, being at the races, etc I would put here Chad and Ken for example. I think this last group is more prone to having a loong career.

But you can really tell from the start. Chad was probablly in the 1st group till '09. 2010 changed him completely.

Yep, I for one hope the Kings records never go for that fact alone, well unless and Aussie rider in the future comes over and dominates for the time needed to take all the records, I could live with that. Smile

As much as I root for the "old" guys, I really got the sense from Reed himself- watching him savor this win as much as possible, that maybe even he thought this could be his last win.

I thought his reaction overall was kind of odd. He was obviously estatic, but also seemed very emotional and the thought ran through my mind that he was killing some time while his emotions settled down and he didn't want to pull an MA on camera.

Let me be clear, I hope this is NOT his last time to the top of the podium, but it just seemed like he was spending alot of time breathing it in.

Honestly.....I would say it's going to be dang near impossible to see MC's record fall. I mean hell.....look at RC , Stewart and Reed.....3 of the best this sport has ever seen.....and they haven't made it more than to about 60% of what MC had won.

Think of it this way.......lets say both Stewart and Reed do a bunch of winning this year ( which I don't think will happen either )......but both hit the magical #50. That leaves them both needing 23 friggin' wins to BEAT MC's record!

That's 2 years of pretty much ass whuppin' domination....and at their age.....I just don't see it.

Maybe, but I don't think that we will see too many guys doing what Chad and James are doing. There will be guys that can ride until they are a little older (by moto standards), but guys that can still win at an advanced age, I'm not so sure.

Well put . I agree I dont see it either
and as some others have said
I hope not . It gets rather boring knowing who is gonna win
.. it also seems like we at sorta a peak of
talent right now .
I know there are still good amatuers coming up
but I could see that thinning out a bit in the coming years.
Compared to what we have now and have enjoyed
for the last 3 to 5 years.

I didn't get that at all. I think it was just the emotion of all his work paying off and finally getting that 42nd win after the way 2012 and 2013 went. When Reed wins a race he starts thinking he can win more, not less.

Eli is an amazing rider but to say anything like this at this point is just crazy talk.

72 sx wins is as safe a record as 150 mx/sx is. These are unbreakable records in our sport, regardless of how long guys stay in it. James was the only guy with a crack at 72 but his window has closed. I thought early on he could maybe get there.

Everts 10 world titles might well be broken, but not the above two.

So each are on the downside of their careers if we go by what we have all seen in past riders. This new age thing could possibly prolong a riders career, but not their peak. I know reed just won but every once in a while a rider not at their peak wins, it's happened before.

Brayton has had a couple good rides lately, but I'd like to see some more of those to claim he is peaking at 30

I think it'll be hard to beat MC's record.

Assuming a guy's motivation stays the same and high, I think whether age comes into play depends on how well a rider manages his health and injuries early on. Both Reed and Stewart have done okay in that regard, and, as well, took fairly extended times off from racing (unfortunately the outdoors) during some years. He and Stew also are a bit in common in terms of taking time off when things aren't playing out well health or bike wise.

Who said that he is peaking at 30? The fact is though that he has never passed RV to take a win, from what I can remember.

The only way MC's record ever gets broken is if they ditch the nationals and start racing 30 SX's a year. 72 is safe for a long time.
